Dear ATLAS/ti beta testers,

(sorry if you get this twice or that the topic is not of interest for you
but there are chances that of some who are currently
using the program we do not have e-mail addresses. TM)

following a proposal by researchers from Finland, we (project ATLAS) have
decided to install a "special interest group (SIG)" in form of a mailing-
list concerning the use of the textinterpretation support system ATLAS/ti.
Most technical and conceptual problems can be handled much better by our
collaborative efforts. Mailing-lists provide an efficient communication
channel among its members.

All members of the "SIG" receive mail sent by other members and vice ver-
sae. This is done by addressing the mail not to an individual but to a
special network address ("ATLAS-ti@DB0TUI11") which is not the e-mail ad-
dress of a real person but that of a program which distributes incoming
messages automatically. Administrative functions like subscribing or un-
subscribing to the mailing-list are also handled automatically. A detailed
description of how to become a member in the ATLAS/ti mailing-list is in-
cluded at the end of this e-mail. Also included is a (very) short version
of a general info concerning LISTSERV.

The purpose of the list will be the following:

- a discussion forum for technical and pragmatic aspects of the use of
ATLAS/ti.

For instance, questions concerning problems during the installation of
the program, the proper use of code families and network views are all
valid topics. Questions and statements concerning the "readiness-at-
hand" would also fit here.

- discuss methodological issues arising with the use of the program.

Topics could be the value of network representations for the research
process and how traditional styles of text interpretation are mapped
into the framework of the tool. What artefacts hinder or foster the
process of text interpretation?

- give negative and positive (but always constructive!-)) critique, which
is also very welcome.

- share experiences using the system in concrete research settings.

- provide the members with latest information about current developments.

- announce workshops, meetings, etc. which are of potential interest.

!! Questions which can only be answered by us shall not be sent to the
mailing-list but to ATLAS@db0tui11. These could include questions like
"when will the next beta-version be released?".

!! We CAN NOT answer questions like "Our mail-system does not display the
subject header correctly, what can I do?". You should address these
questions to your local computer staff.

This invitation goes to all our current beta-testers and will also be
posted in the newsgroup BIT.LISTSERV.qualrs-L to invite interested resear-
chers.

Lets get started. If you want to SUBscribe to the mailing-list please do
the following:
1. Send a message to LIST...@DB0TUI11.BITNET

On an IBM/VM system issue the command:

TELL LISTSERV@DB0TUI11 SUB ATLAS-TI yourAccountAndNode lastname firstname

Example:
TELL LISTSERV@DB0TUI11 SUB ATLAS-TI miller@uqam Miller Henry

Please note that this administrative mail is directed to LISTSERV and NOT
ATLAS-TI. It is very annoying to see lots of SUBscribe and UNSUBscribe
mails being distributed to dozens of users!

If you do not have a direct message connection use your mail system. Send
a mail to the adress used in the TELL command above. Make your first line
in the mail be:
SUB ATLAS-TI yourAccountAndNode lastname firstname

The mails subject-field will be ignored, you can leave it empty.

2. When you have become a member of the list, of which you will be ack-
nowledged as soon as your request has been handled by the machine, send
your contributions by sending mail to ATLA...@DB0TUI11.BITNET. This is
the mail-address from which your contributions will be automatically
distributed to the other users.

DONT FORGET: No administrative commands to ATLAS-TI. If you want to unsub-
scribe or use other commands which can be directed to the listserver use
LIS...@DB0TUI11.BITNET as recipient.

Alltogether you have 3 distinct addresses concerning the mailing-list:
- ATLAS-TI@db0tui11 - The mailing list. In other words, your virtual au-
dience
- ATLAS@db0tui11 - (Real life) representatives of project ATLAS
- LISTSERV@db0tui11 - The list server for general information

It should be kept in mind, that mail addressed to ATLAS-TI is sent to ALL
registered members. Before pressing the "REPLY" button in your mail pro-
gram, assure yourself of the correct recipient. The default recipient of
pressing "REPLY" will usually be the mailing list! It is not very seldom,
that private messages are sent to hundreds of users. (This will surely not
be our problem!-). Make yourself knowledgable about possible options of
the mail-program that you are using. Find out how to switch between priva-
te and public answers.

Thank you very much -
Thomas Muhr, the "list owner", Project ATLAS

The following is an extremely truncated version of an info text concerning
the concepts and use of mailing-lists. I have reduced it to achieve an
e-mailable and hopefully still comprehensable format. It only contains the
most important information to get started. I have also modified the exam-
ples.

****************************************
* How can I send commands to LISTEARN? *
****************************************

Commands can be sent to LISTEARN in three basic ways: interactive
messages, mail, and non-mail files.
In the following discussion it will be assumed that you
want to send an "Info GENintro" command to LISTSERV at DB0TUI11 (or
LIST...@DB0TUI11.BITNET in RFC822 terms).

A) Interactive messages

[stuff deleted by TM]

- On VM/SP systems, this command is "TELL LISTSERV AT DB0TUI11", ie
what you must do is "TELL LISTSERV AT DB0TUI11 Info GENintro". You
could also use CP SMSG rscs MSG DB0TUI11 LISTSERV Info GENintro,
where "rscs" is the name of the RSCS virtual machine at your site.

[stuff deleted by TM]

- On VAX systems the command would be "SEND" or "SEND/MSG":
"SEND LISTSERV@DB0TUI11 Info GENintro"

B) Mail files

[stuff deleted by TM]

To send a command to LISTEARN via mail, all you have to do is send
mail to the LISTEARN mailbox and type in the command text as first
line in the mail body or note or whatever it is called in your sys-
tem.

[stuff deleted by TM]

- All VM systems can send IBM NOTEs by issuing a "NOTE LISTSERV AT
DB0TUI11" command. Issue a "HELP NOTE" command for more information
on the IBM NOTE command format.

- VM systems equipped with a Crosswell mailer can send RFC822 mail
by issuing a "MAIL LISTSERV@DB0TUI11" command. The subject field is
ignored and needs not be specified.

C) Non-mail files

***********************************************
* Commands description (non-privileged users) * ---> GENCOM <---
***********************************************

[stuff deleted by TM]

The following commands can be sent to LISTSERV@DB0TUI11
(TM)

Info <? | topic>

Sends you an information file like this one. Use "Info ?" for a list of
topics. Please note that some of the documents available through the
INFO command are restricted to certain categories of users.

Help

Sends you a brief description of the most useful commands, along with
the names and network addresses of the server's postmasters.

Example: TELL listserv@db0tui11 help

SUBscribe listname <your_full_name>

Use this command to subcribe to a list. You will be automatically added
to it unless the list owner has disabled this option, in which case he
will be sent a request-for-addition note. If you have misspelled your
name when issuing this command in the first place, you will be able to
correct it by re-issuing it without having to sign off from the list
first. In that case no notification is sent to the list owner.

[stuff deleted by TM]

SIGNOFF listname
UNSubscribe

This is the counterpart of the SUBSCRIBE command.

Example: TELL listserv@db0tui11 signoff atlas-ti

[stuff deleted by TM]

REView listname

Sends you the (formatted) contents of a list (the users, TM).

Example: TELL listserv@db0tui11 rev atlas-ti

You can get the complete file by issuing:

TELL listserv get listserv memo
