I inherited a rs6000 'pizza box' system - it boots up fine, just have no
idea from predessor what the root password is

I have key and all - how do I get into maintenence mode and change the root
password? - Been many moons since I have had to do this

i would take a look at this posting... its quite interesting :)

Basically, boot from cd, hit f5 if you have a graphical console or the 5
key for ascii console when the keyboard is 1st initialised at boot time
and this shold then boot from CD.

Follow the prompts until you get to the maint menu and select "maint and
recovery" -> "start a maint shell" -> "mount the rootvg filesystems"
then again follow the prompts selecting you rootvg disk etc..

once in the maint shell use the passwd command and set the passwd. you
will be logged in as root so just type

# passwd <cr>

And if you are running 4.1 thru 4.3.2, there is a security hole big enought to
drive two truck thru. Do NOT bother with external media (keep it OUT of the
machine) and boot pressing F6. You will boot in service mode from the hard disk
(note this works with PCI and CHRP machines - if you have an older RS6K but are
running the above listed systems, turn the key to 'service').

When you are given 4 or 5 choices of actions in diagnostics mode, ignore the
displayed choices, but enter '41'. You will now be in a root shell with no
password required. This backdoor was removed in 4.3.3.
