I had redownloaded the Rio Software, and installed it again, then installed
the drivers.
But at times it will connect to the Rio, but I can not reliably control the
device.
The Rio LCD shows <USB Comm> for a few seconds, then it goes back to
displaying the song title, and at this point, I am no longer able to
communicate with the device.
If I unplug the Rio and plug it back in again, I can reestablish
communication for a minute or so.
But no matter what I do, I can not reliably connect to my Rio 500.
The device works fine under Windows ME on the same machine(I still have
Windows ME installed on a duplicate hard disk), so the problem only occurs
under Windows XP.
How can I reliably use this device ?
Thank you

Did you ever find a fix for your Rio500?
Could you please share it if you did?
I'm having the same problem.
Thanks

Thanks. Let me know. If I find a fix, I too will post it here. So far, no
go.
Anyone else out there have any suggestions on getting a Rio 500 MP3 player
to install and work with XP?
Best regards,
Artman

Hello Striker!
Thanks for the reply.
Sadly, www.riohome.com reports unhelpfully that the "Drivers for your Rio
are bundled within the install software on your CD." Those are the very
drivers that do not work and will not install into WindowsXP. And the
"updated" version: 2.1.16
Release Date: 11/01/99 File Size: 3.70MB of the "software" (which never was
very good anyway) similarly will not install.
Thanks anyway.
Best regards,
Artman

The problem has something to do with the USB Hub. I have a Belkin USB Hub,
and everything else works fine, but the problem only occurs with the Rio500.
When I plugged the Rio500 into the motherboard USB port, bypassing the hub,
it now works fine, as long as I installed the drivers from the Rio site.
Have you ever seen this before ? Is this something I should be concerned
with, or is this normal ?

Do you have any other USB devices in use? Perhaps the problem is WinXP
support for your USB drivers.
mmm
