When I play or copy any of my music CDs WMP7 (and 7.1) say
this error message:
"We have determined that Windows Media Player cannot
accurately read your CD drive digitally. Windows Media
Player will therefore switch to reading your CD drive in
analog mode. Your CD's will play, but the following will
not work when playing CD's: Visualizations, SRS Wow
effect, Graphic Equalizer."
Plus I have also gone to 'System' in the Control Panel and
looked up my drive in the Device Manager and it too says
its not digital as it is blured out in the Digital CD
Playback section of the Properties tab of my CD-ROMs
properties. I checked the manual of my CD-ROM drive and it
does say that it does have digital audio playback on it. I
remember I didn't have this problem a few months ago. What
can I do to fix this?
Thanks for you help.

I'll assume that the Visualzations etc. have not worked
when playing CD's before, you just never received teh
message. My CD-ROM also send it's signal digitally but it
requires a seperate type of cable. The connectors are
slightly larger then the normal analog ones. The digital
cable will plug into your soundcard rather then the mother
board if I am not mistaken.

On the other hand, if your system has played the CD's with
the Visual, effects, etc. in the past...then I don't have
a clue. There is always the stand-by of remove and
reinstall. Last resort of course.

Good luck

There is a bug in media player that gives this message if you have renamed
any drive letters (i.e. set CD drive to a letter other than it's default).
Solution is to remove the CD drives in device manager and then restart
Windows. This will redetect the CD / DVD and you should get digital playback
and record being available again.

Of course none of the software that you installed since changing the drive
letters will work any more (Luckily I had just reinstalled Windows when I
got this error).

Finally, you don't need a digital cable (SPDIF ?) to record and play
digitally (it just improves the quality (and throughput ?) to my knowledge).

Hope that this is of use
