The Key Grip is the head person in charge of the lighting. Since the main
light is called the Key light and is the one on the "Star" of the flick,
the grip or lighting crew head is called the Key Grip. His assistant
(if I can remember the order correctly) is the Gaffer from whence comes
the term Gaffer's tape by which movie and still photographers refer to
duct tape. Third person on the totem pole is the Best Boy.

I grip is a person whose job is moving and setting the lighting equiptment.
The key grip is the grip foreman.

In movie lingo a "Key Grip" is the person who is the
main person (hence "key") in charge of hanging the lighting
instruments from the light grid (hence "grip").

I believe that you will find that while a grip is a lighting man a gaffer
is one of the people who handle stringing things from the ceiling like the
false roofs and the catwalks that the grips use.
