A short summary:

Fri:
Set up camp in Frisco Woods amid clouds of mosquitoes and windsurfers. Made
my way to the beach (Frisco Pier AKA: Todd cant' keep a secrete spot) and
flopped around in annoyingly small wind chop.
Met DD, Rod, Steve M, and Edmond for grub (excellent stuff DD) and one to
many beers. Watched Steve M annihilate everyone on the foosball table and
laughed at the annoying band (well at least they had spirit). Woke up,
packed up, checked the surf.

Sat:
Hung out at the lighthouse dried the tent, sanded some dings out, and
re-hydrated myself. The surf was blown w/o much form, not promising. Edmond
crawled out of his house on wheels and we went to check the break in front
of DD's. It looked much better there ~ waist high w/ some larger ones
popping through every once and a while. Paddled out with the log and kinda
got my surfing legs back. Rod and Neal Carver (world class kneeboarder : ))
paddled out and everyone traded some nice rights. Rod and Edmond went in to
secure the house, while Neal and I ate and watched the locals. Paddled out
for another session and continued to score some loooong lines, all walled up
and clean. Neal saw a manatee surface between us in about 5-8' of water, I
think I saw it later sitting on the surface about 20 yards away. Made it to
the house round 5ish unloaded, met Sarge, Ferg, Foon, Myron, KC, Lana, Todd,
drank beer, and ate (thanks KC and Lana). The front came through.

Sun:
I was awakened by what sounded like either a fog horn or the manatee
bellowing at various intervals throughout the night. Neal whipped up a
killer breakfast and everyone went in force to the lighthouse after Frisco
showed nothing. The lighthouse was lots of fun with a main peak providing
short rights, or longer lefts with a right reform inside. The call seemed to
be catch a good one in, walk back to the jetty and paddle out. The longshore
current was a bit of a pain, sweeping past the takeoff point fairly quick. I
saw some great rides that day from the assorted GP2K1'ers. Ferg caught an
excellent ride with some tip time on the inside, Rod always seemed to be
inside of me taking off deep (bastard!). The general consensus seemed to be
that we needed to affix one of those little orange flags that kids have on
their bikes so we can see him coming. I almost ran over Foon, who was
sitting inside on one set, and saw Neal grab more than his share of waves.
There were others in the water but I was focused primarily on the waves and
staying in position (i.e. not being caught inside). I was so unaware of my
surroundings (well let's call it focused) I almost drove off w/o Steve M.
Back to the house, ate some ribs Ferg cooked up with the ever-present
supervision from Lucy.

Mon:
Strong N wind, nasty cold. Checked out Oregon (sp?) inlet with Ferg, DD,
Neal, Todd. I threw in Los Straitjackets, 4 low, and hit the beach at a high
rate of speed (If I got that muther stuck we would be some walking fools).
Nothing worth getting out of the truck for. I think I shifted some of Todd's
insides around busting over the ruts and divots. But I had to DD was
giggling like a four year old and thoroughly enjoying herself. Went back to
the house ate lunch and waited for the tide to drop. Went to Todd's not so
secrete spot (TNSSS) and found out that he speakith the truth. Super clean
lines, nice and long, offshore. Everyone had a great time with plenty of
great rides, wipeouts, and collisions (sorry there Ferg). Brats and beer for
dinner.

Tues:
Pulled a dawn patrol with KC, Edmond, and Neal. Not too bad, looked better
once we got in the water. Bait fish jumping everywhere, not many fishermen,
cold air temps. More small lines w/ light sideshore winds. The annoying
NY'ers showed up and after a while we headed back for lunch. Back again that
evening for an evening session, fun, not quite as cold. The lines were not
as long as the wind had shifted more to the East. Had it almost to ourselves
until the NY'ers showed up again and began to snake everyone within their
reach. More rides had by all, and a couple more collisions (sorry there
Ferg). DD whipped up some tasty Swordfish and accessories for dinner.

Wed:
Headed out.

Thurs:
Head high today building to 7', should last through Saturday!
So what about that redneck o'palooza next year?

I truly enjoyed meeting everyone, and putting some faces to the monikers. I
was also quite impressed by the fact that I don't think at any point anyone
digressed into partisan AS politics (well I could have missed some of it
though).

I didn't take a hell of allot of photos but those that turn out I will post
to the site.

Later,
Andy

BWAHAHAHAHAH! No worries. Being left behind is a
GP tradition just as much as me being swept downcurrent.
*Although*...You say the longshore current was strong,
but it seemed like nothin' to me...I only drifted
about 1/4 mile at the most down from everyone else, and
had no problem getting back when the waves weren't hapnin'
where I drifted to.

In the original GP, the reason I got left behind (at
least at that time I had my car with me and wasn't
stranded as I would have been if *you* drove off)
was that I was hard to see out cuz it was getting
pretty dark, and at that time, the average drift
was probably about a mile or so down the beach.
Thus, the lyrics to the themesong.

Anyway, thanks for the ride, and especially thanks
for the warning. If you drive again next year, I'll
make sure I bring my signal flares with me to fire
off if I see ya headin' outta the water!

Steve

Damn, that breakfast making madman Neal was amazing wasn't he?? Made to order
Omelets one day then the next, perfect blueberry pancakes all on his own
traveling grill!! <insert drooling smiley of choice> Of the first few rides I
saw when checking out the Lighthouse before I went out were both Ferg and Andy
milking wrapping reform swells all the way in. Both logged tip time. I am happy
to think I caught both of them later Monday night at the secret spot on film.
I've never seen either of them surf before but can tell you their style and ease
of riding set them apart from many. Andy is another tall AS drink of water (what
is it with these Paul Bunyons in this group??) but his grace on the sliding slab
makes him shine in the waves. I enjoyed watching both of them ride, even when
they were trying to trade boards mid ride. I was particularly happy that these
Gulf Coast first timers had the opportunity to not only experience the
camaraderie of the event but get some good surfing time in too. Oh, and welcome
to the "Rod Rodgers snaked me" club. I like the idea of marking him with an
orange flag. Lets stick it in the top of his head, no anesthetic. He did seem to
get a lot on Sunday. Why do you think he got the wavehog towel?

Nah, we made some funnies but it was never an issue. Hardly mentioned because of
all that was going on. Lucy got more attention than Lemons. But she probably
surfs better :) and I'm sure is better company.

Kudos to you Andy for the excellent grilled sausage dinner, with potato salad,
cooking under challenging conditions in the wind. Super grinds brah.

Now that you guys are going home a good swell is developing. The
swell should hit Florida well and Surfers Beach in the Bahamas will be
going off.

I hadn't had pancakes like that since I still lived with mom! Thanks Neal.

She's cuter too!

I tried to take Lucy surfing at Todd's secret spot on Tuesday, but she
didn't want to play in the cool water. I think when it's hot and she's
panting that she likes getting wet more.

She's either sad or just worn out since we've been home. All that fun and
attention was great for her.

Do you mean Surfers' Beach on Puerto Rico's N/NW shore? It is probably
out of control based on the size/swell direction showing in these clips,
but Wilderness will be going off nicely at 10-12' (maybe more). The web
cam below is on the northern face of the west shore in Rincon. The cam
periodically pans to the north which is full of whitewater - Table Rock
maybe nice and that's all you'll get out of me.

(click the rewind button for the last 24 hrs).

Foon, KC and I are closing the GP loop at the OC/Md shore on Sunday.

A very sad puppy. Guess she's coming down from the high of all those
treats she scored. Lucy was a wonderful guest. My cooler wents nuts when
I walked in the back door and let me know *all* about it for hours <g>.
He's never quite gone off like that in the past but with the boy away at
school he just missed me all the more.

Highlights of my time at GP2K1

Got in late Friday, down a quick couple of brews, followed Andy to his campsite
and slept in the van. Woke up early enough to avoid the guy on the golf cart
making sure there aren't too many cars at the campsite.

Saturday, hooked up with Andy for the first surf session, nice fun longboard
waves. Had to get out to get something in my stomach, and went to check out the
lighthouse. There ran into Myron who indicated the house was open, so I cruised
up to Avon to the T-Base. Noticed this guy outside of Dee-Dee's door, wondered
about who it was but figured it was some tourist walking down the hallway/porch.
Later at the house, I found out it was Todd, looking for his board that DD had
in her room. Went back to DD's got Todd board and out for Session number 2. DD
paddled out with us this time and she was a real trooper, kept thinking she'd
gone back in, when she'd paddle back outside again. All this without fins.

Late that night Todd placed a bet with Sarge that I couldn't wake up by 6AM
without an alarm clock. (Glad you reduced that amount Todd) and after an
impressive night imitating Mark Sisom Bubba's Experience (sorry Andy, and Neal)
got up at 5:54 went up stairs where Steve awoke to verify the bet. Back to bed.

Sunday, not much surf, but lots of beer.

Monday, finally got in the water around 4PM with KC, down the beach from the
Frisco Pier, after a while went back to the pier where everyone else had shown
up and conditions had improved.

Had a nice little jam session with Dee Dee that evening in the downstairs den,
trading songs on acoustics for about an hour. Great playing music with you Dee.

Tuesday dawn patrol at the pier, beautiful morning, nice waves only the 4 of us
ASers for 2 hours. Kind of freaky when the bait fish all decided to jump out of
the water around me, but got used to that after not getting crunched for
breakfast by whatever was chasing them.

Tuesday dusk patrol, I decided to try out the new board Sarge graciously picked
up for me from his shaper. An 8'2" tri fun funshape from Fly surfboards, a far
cry from my 10' single fin Harbour. Also decided to trunk it, figured it would
be a good psych factor. The board was FANTASTIC, caught the first wave I tried
for on it, and didn't miss many after that. At first it felt a bit squirrelly,
but got it wired in no time.
Can't wait for some size and clean faces with it. A bit chilly without a
wetsuit, some of the others people out there had hoods on an stuff, but the
water was warm. One time I paddled over to a group of them and said loudly "It's
great to be surfing in such warm conditions" One guy looked at me and paddled
away kind of quickly, maybe he thought it was contagious. The hot tub did feel
good that night.

All in all a great time, I counted 13 hours of surf time out of a possible 48,
probably 5 times that amount of beer time, and 100% of it a good time.

Glad to meet those of you I hadn't met before, and seeing those of you I have.

peace
edmund
