Sternhell''s objective is to take a complete inventory of [two forces shaping Israeli
identity]: nationalism and socialism. This wide-ranging ambition, borne of a
historian''s true inspiration, rests on impressive documentation. 友ran?s Furet

From The Publisher:
The well-known historian and political scientist Zeev Sternhell here advances
a radically new interpretation of the founding of modern Israel. The founders
claimed that they intended to create both a landed state for the Jewish people
and a socialist society. However, according to Sternhell, socialism served the
leaders of the influential labor movement more as a rhetorical resource for the
legitimation of the national project of establishing a Jewish state than as a
blueprint for a just society.

Sternhell demonstrates how socialist principles were consistently subverted
in practice by the nationalist goals to which socialist Zionism was committed.
Sternhell explains how the avowedly socialist leaders of the dominant labor
party, Mapai, especially David Ben-Gurion and Berl Katznelson, never really
believed in the prospects of realizing the "dream" of a new society, even though
many of their working-class supporters were self-identified socialists. The
founders of the state understood, from the very beginning, that not only
socialism but also other universalistic ideologies like liberalism were
incompatible with cultural, historical, and territorial nationalism.

Because nationalism took precedence over universal values, argues Sternhell,
Israel has not evolved a constitution or a Bill of Rights, has not moved to
separate state and religion, has failed to develop a liberal concept of citizenship,
and, until the Oslo accords of 1993, did not recognize the rights of the Palestinians
to independence. This is a controversial and timely book, which not only provides
useful historical background to Israel's ongoing struggle to mobilize its citizenry
to support a shared vision of nationhood, but also raises a question of general
significance: is a national movement whose aim is a political and cultural
revolution capable of coexisting with the universal values of secularism,
individualism, and social justice?

From Princeton University Press:
Sternhell's objective is to take a complete inventory of [two forces shaping
Israeli identity]: nationalism and socialism. This wide-ranging ambition, borne
of a historian's true inspiration, rests on impressive documentation.

From Robert S. Wistrich - Princeton University Press:
[Sternhell''s] work has an analytical intensity, a solidity and erudition generally
lacking among the so-called `new [post-Zionist] historians.'' Not for Sternhell
the ethical relativism of the postmodernists. His values are clearly those of
the old Left.... This is the yardstick from which he judges the Israeli labour
movement, and he finds it deeply flawed.

From Jerome Slater - Princeton University Press:
Sternhell''s conclusions on Israel''s expansionism after 1967 are important
and powerful.... The demythologizing work of Sternhell and his fellow `new
historians'' is, finally, profoundly constructive--as they clearly intended it to be.

From Fran?s Furet - Princeton University Press:

From Alain-Gcrard Slama - Princeton University Press:
Some of his interpretations may occasionally be questioned, but one cannot
doubt the intellectual courage and erudition of this professor of the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem, where his strong secularism and his devotion to
the heritage of the Enlightenment make him both the leader of a school and
an outstanding figure.

From Nicholas Weill - Princeton University Press:
Zeev Sternhell . . . has observed as a historian the reality behind the myth
that had assured the power of the Labor Movement for nearly forty years,
until the arrival of Menahem Begin and the Likud in 1977. First surprise: the s
tereotype of the soldier-peasant, which one associates with the Jewish
society of Palestine before 1948, masked a principle far-removed from the
bucolic reveries of the ''founding fathers''. . . . Had Sternhell simply shown
how the socialist leaders--under the crushing weight of constraining realities--
amended their program and sacrificed their egalitarian ideology on the altar
of pragmatism, he would not have produced an original book. The interest
of this work, however, comes from Sternhell''s demonstration that the primacy
given to national objectives indeed proceeded from an ideological choice.

From Yosef Agassi - Princeton University Press:
Not every day does one come across a history book of such great
contemporary significance as that of Zeev Sternhell. . . . This is a very important
book, which raises historical questions of an ever-fresh political significance.

From Menachem Brinker - Princeton University Press:
This book will undoubtedly create discussion and debate for some time. An
excellent companion to Simha Flapan''s The Birth of Israel (LJ 8/87) and worthy
reading for anyone interested in comparative political development.

From Publisher's Weekly - Publishers Weekly:
Every national history has its myths. In this political/intellectual history, Sternhell,
a professor of political science at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, targets the
Israeli myths that its founders were socialists committed to building a just society.
The author argues that leftist Zionist intellectuals and political leaders in the first
half of the centuryicons such as Israel's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion,
as well as lesser-known figuressubsumed whatever socialist principles they
had to the goal of creating a Jewish state.

"Socialism was never an aim in itself but a tool for the advancement of national
objectives, an incomparably effective mobilizing force," he writes. Those who
are familiar with, and believers in, standard Zionist history will feel challenged
while those who are less familiar will probably be a bit lost given the lack of a
larger context. Sternhell's (Neither Right nor Left) method of comparing early
labor Zionist leaders with their European counterparts comes across as a
matter of opinion and an unfair comparison: the Zionists worked, after all, in a
vastly different historical context. One also wishes that more attention was paid
to the links between early Zionist thought and the extreme nationalism of the
post-1967 era. If this book is any indication, the battle over the history of Zionism
is far from finished. (Jan.)

for Vermont has three times now elected Bernie Sanders, self-proclaimed

modern Vermonter: the son of a Flatbush paint salesman, he came here as

The 1990s will go down as the decade in which socialism was rejected
all over the world--except in Vermont. At least in House elections: for Vermont
has three times now elected Bernie Sanders, self-proclaimed Socialist, to
Congress. Sanders is not just a Socialist..... Sanders became only the third
Socialist elected to the House, after Victor Berger of Milwaukee (1911-13,
1923-29) and Meyer London of Manhattan's Lower East Side (1915-23).
In the House Sanders has actually functioned as a liberal Democrat, with
committee slots and seniority, plus plenteous contributions, up through 1994,
from PACs. He voted against the Gulf war resolution... generally had one of
the most liberal voting records in the House--including active opposition to
the Contract With America. He moved without success to require on-budget,
cash payoff of S&L and possible bank bailouts, to be funded by progressive
taxes: Vermont thrift and Fabian socialism, all in one breath.

FOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE January 9, 1997

SANDERS SPEAKS TO PROGRESSIVE CAUCUS CONFERENCE

The House Progressive Caucus held a major conference today attended by
national leaders of the labor movement, the women's movement, the
environmental community, the civil rights community and academia. A number
of progressive Congresspersons also attended.

Congressman Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., gave a speech detailing some of the
very serious economic problems facing the middle class and working families
of this country, and urged the Congress to make these issues the centerpiece
of Congressional action during the coming year. In his remarks, Sanders said:

"Far and away, the most important issue facing this country is whether our
middle class will survive, or whether we will evolve into a country of the very rich
and the poor. Congress must address our government's disastrous economic
policies which today benefit the very wealthy, at the expense of the middle class
and working families of this country. We must bring fundamental reform to our
tax policies, our trade policies, our campaign finance policies, and our health
care policies. Government must begin working for all the people, and not just
the privileged few."

Sanders continued, "It is unacceptable that the United States now has, by
far, the most unequal distribution of wealth and income in the industrialized
world. The richest one percent of the population now owns 42 percent of the
wealth, more than the bottom ninety percent -- and the gap between the rich
and the poor is growing wider. For the last fifteen years, almost all of the new
wealth created in this country has gone to the upper ten percent -- while
eighty percent of all American families saw either a decline in their incomes,
or income stagnation. Meanwhile, most of the new jobs being created are
low wage jobs that are temporary or part time, and most have very limited
benefits."

[That last paragraph looks pretty Marxist to me! I guess Bernie wants the
government to redistribute the wealth like they did in all the other Communistic
Worker's Paradises! Tavish comment]

I certify that all reading the above material, while considering the
sources from which I got the information will see a very distinct pattern.
Our very American way of life is under assault internally and the vast
majority of the citizenry is fast asleep. Fellow Americans it is now time
that you had your wake up call. Now save this document, print it out,
give it to all that you know- friends and relatives and last but not least- verify
all of the information that I have worked hours to compile and supp ly! O
ur forefathers had no intentions of their dream being defecated on in this
manner.

I will leave all oif you this and you should think long and hard about the
source and its implications:

"In early 1942 the Polska Partia Robotnicza
[PPR], the Communist party in a new guise
made its appearance in the Generalgouverne-
ment... The PPR is mentioned again on page
431 where we read: "The Soviet Union, for
example, began in 1943 to back only such
indigenous Communist resistance movements in
the several East European countries as would
provide it with postwar political footholds
there.
... The Soviet Union, for its part, through
the PPR supported the People's Army with funds
and materiel, on the calculation that it would
establish the Communist presence in postwar
Poland." For further proof of Jewry's
communistic ties turn to page 434 [bottom] and
read the socialist and communist links : "The
[Jewish Labor] Bundists were cut off from contact
with Polish Socialists; the Jewish Communists were
isolated from their parent PPR." [The PPR is
mentioned above.] The Jewish Judenrat leadership
advised, starting on page 436: "One form of
compromise between ghetto and the resistance
movement was the option in Eastern areas for the
Jewish youth to join the Soviet partisan movement.
... The first thing the partisan learned, if he
lived long enough, was that in defense of the Soviet
Union no human cost was too high."

[Who were these Jews loyal to?]

Page 360 "Early in 1941 the Bund's Central
Committee in the Warsaw ghetto sent a report to its
New York organization, describing its functions as
it then perceived them... [Communists have a New
York operation! Tavish comment added] the Bund's
Central Committee adopted a policy statement
setting forth their political hopes and expectations:

Poland is our homeland, where we are entitled to equal
citizenship rights, where our future lies. . . . Any other
Solutions offered, under present conditions, by Zionist
or other Jewish groups, are wrong and utopian, as they
always were. Together with the Polish working masses
struggling underground, the Jewish people of Poland
see no other means of survival, but the defeat of Hitler-
ism and the reconstruction of a free, independent, and
Socialist Poland." [Jews want a Socialist Poland and
they got it after WW II. Tavish comment added]

Page 361-2 "On May 1, 1941, Dror issued a proclamation
that avowed once more the movement's dual loyalty to
Palestine and socialism and which held out the hope of
the inevitable realization of a socialist Palestine:

The struggle with the Hitlerite conqueror has tem-
porarily separated us from Eretz Israel, but just as there
is no power in the world that can separate us from the
struggle for a socialist world, thus nothing can separate
us from the land of our ultimate hope. The building of
Eretz Israel is undeniably connected with the collapse
of capitalism; a socialist Eretz Israel will rise or fall
with the success or failure of socialism."

For the Jews to succeed capitalism needs to collapse! Read this over
and over many times to let it sink in! Now go read all about Bernard Sanders
in our U.S. Congress, his Progressive Caucus and agenda, and his association
with the Democratic Socialists of America. Now what are you going to do?
