local and international activities. The campaign will culminate in a gala
"roast" honoring Irvine E. Epstein, Q.C., Vancouver's pre-eminent advocate of

B'rith Humanitarian Award at a dinner on Nov. 20....

[A] set-back for the anti-racist movement in B.C., indeed across Canada, came
with the court's finding in favour of Eileen and Klaus Pressler in their
defamation suit against Dr. David Lethbridge. The Salmon Arm couple sued CHBC (a
Kelowna television station) and Lethbridge, a psychology professor and human
rights activist, on the basis of one eight minute television news story in 1993
that allegedly impugned their reputations by ?unfairly casting them as white
supremacists and neo-Nazi hate mongers?.... As Lethbridge's lawyer, Irvine
Epstein. Q.C. put it: ?This case is about the right, and indeed the duty of a
concerned citizen to inform and educate others in opposition to those who preach
racial hatred, bigotry and intolerance.?
The B'nai Brith Lodge and League in B.C. continue to provide moral and financial
support to Lethbridge through a province-wide and national fundraising campaign.
An appeal is planned as the eyes of the anti-racism and human rights community

1999 WAS A YEAR of struggle in the anti-fascist movement. The Bethune
Institute, carrying out a consistently militant approach, was able to achieve a
number of successes...
But the main threat facing the working class of every nation is the
growing possibility of global state fascism. We must examine this possibility
seriously, neither giving way to hysterical exaggeration, nor refusing to draw
the necessary conclusions from objective political, economic, and historical
analysis.
The driving force toward global fascism is US imperialism. Like an
ever-expanding bloodstain, it is spreading and deepening its influence into
every corner of the world. Intent on global economic domination, it is backed up
by a ruthless and sophisticated military machine...
But to many workers today, the idea of global US fascism is literally
unthinkable. Imperialist control of ideology means that the very mode in which
people think is manipulated. The ideological attack against socialism,
Communism, and working-class power continues unabated. Further, since elections
continue to be held, and the State continues to operate through a multi-party
system, the spectre of global fascism remains largely invisible at very centre
of its production.
In this context, it is worth quoting what Lenin wrote in 1919, as
fascism first began to take hold: "The forms of domination may vary: capital
manifests its power in one way where one form exists, and in another way where
another form exists - but essentially the power is in the hands of capital,
whether there are voting qualifications or some other rights or not - in fact,
the more democratic it is the cruder and more cynical is the rule of capitalism.
One of the most democratic republics in the world is the United States of
America, yet nowhere is the power of capital, the power of a handful of
multimillionaires over the whole of society, so crude and so openly corrupt as
in America" (The State, Collected Works, v. 29)
Yet global US fascism is more an undeniable possibility than an
accomplished reality. Counter-trends are developing. Mass movements opposing
corporate globalization are maturing. The working class and the peasantry,
especially in South America, is rising and showing signs of strength. Organized
labour in North America is reaching toward left positions. Socialist and
Communist parties around the world are holding their own and building their
base. <END>

Objectives
To inform students about the strategy the Chinese Communist Party used
in carrying out a revolution against the Nationalists and rising to power in
1949.
To give students a sense of both the optimism and the depth and violence
of the struggle waged by Mao Zedong and the Chinese communists during the early
years of the revolution to make a "new China."
Main Ideas
The Chinese revolution of 1949 rested in large part on Mao Zedong's
strategy that emphasized the importance of peasant support. Mao believed that by
sheer force of will, selflessness, and moral conviction much could be
accomplished. He also felt that violence was a necessary part of the
revolution..
Suggested Activities
Assign the Excerpt From Red Star Over China to the class to read before
the lesson.
Read together the background material on Mao during his early life
noting what influenced him as a young man.
Then read his poem on the Long March and his speech on the selflessness
of Norman Bethune, noting two important aspects of Mao's vision of the
revolution: selflessness and determination. Then ask students to suggest how
these two qualities, championed by the Chinese Communist Party, can be found in
the recount of the Long March by Edgar Snow... <END>

In Memory of Norman Bethune

Comrade Norman Bethune, a member of the Communist Party of Canada, was around
fifty when he was sent by the Communist Parties of Canada and the United States
to China... He arrived in Yenan in the spring of last year, went to work in the
Wutai Mountains, and to our great sorrow died a martyr at his post. What kind of
spirit is this that makes a foreigner selflessly adopt the cause of the Chinese
people's liberation as his own? It is the spirit of internationalism, the spirit
of communism, from which every Chinese Communist must learn. Leninism teaches
that the world revolution can only succeed if the proletariat of the capitalist
countries supports the struggle for liberation of the colonial and semi-colonial
peoples and if the proletariat of the colonies and semi-colonies supports the
proletariat of the capitalist countries. Comrade Bethune put his Leninist line
into practice. We Chinese Communists must also follow this line in our practice.
We must unite with the proletariat of all the capitalist countries, with the
proletariat of Japan, Britain, the United States, Germany, Italy and all other
capitalist countries, for this is the only way to overthrow imperialism... <END>
Notice that Norman Bethune who is the object of David Lethbridge's devotion
was an adherent of a worldwide communist overthrow of capitalism and remember
Nizkor/B'nai Brith have given David Lethbridge moral/financial support!

Sometimes it just slips out. The carefully engineered facade, prepared
by advertising agencies, media experts, and speechwriters educated at the very
best of schools, cracks wide open. The benign and caring image presented to
the public as the face of contemporary capitalism disappears and is
replaced by the ugly reality within.
So it was with Silvio Berlusconni, Prime Minister of Italy, leader of
the G8, and ally of President George W. Bush in the new "War on Terrorism."
Berlusconni, the ultra-conservative billionaire...
Bush is [] careful, although barely so. The ideology that accompanies
the endless expansion of US capital, and the endless wars of US imperialism, is
the intertwined ideology of white supremacy, of Christian supremacy, and of
anti-communism....

of the list server is communist YET B'nai Brith has given David Lethbridge
financial and moral support in his rants against conservatives and Christians.

The Marxist-Leninist Theory of Fascism
David Lethbridge
Marxist-Leninists, and the world communist movement as a whole, pay
particular attention to fascism because fascism's greatest danger is to the
working class, their organizations, and their political parties. Any successful
resistance to fascism, in all its forms, requires a theory based firmly in the
experience of the working class struggle.
The classic definition of fascism in power was presented by Georgi
Dimitrov at the 7th Congress of the Communist International in 1935: "Fascism is
the open dictatorship of the most reactionary, most chauvinistic and imperialist
elements of the financial oligarchy."...
As Marxist-Leninists, we recognize that the problem of neo-fascism is
not limited to fascist organizations, but includes fascist tendencies within the
capitalist state itself. Since fascism is a direct product of capitalism in
crisis, fascist tendencies will always exist within the capitalist state...
Domestically, fascist tendencies within the capitalist state range from
the active repression and outright murder of progressive leaders, to political
frame-ups, to the jailing of progressive leaders, to the privatization of the
prison system, to the repression of active dissent, to the criminalization or
decertification of the Communist Party, to an endless stream of acts of police
brutality.
Within this context, it is also important to speak of trends within the
capitalist state that may well bring ultra-reactionary forces into government
that begin to approach the ideology and policy of fascism. In the United States,
the fact that Republican Trent Lott, the Senate Majority leader, as well as a
number of state governors and elected representatives, are members of white
supremacist and neo-Confederate organizations, having themselves ties to
international fascism, is a matter of the gravest concern.
In Canada, the reactionary Reform Party continues to grow and might
conceivably form the next government. Even though they must necessarily downplay
the overt racism that characterized its early phase in order to gain power,
their demagogic positions on First Nations, homosexuality, abortion,
immigration, and secular education, as well as their anti-intellectualism, their
law-and-order policies, and their attempts to whip up support for the death
penalty, require an all-out effort on the part of progressives to defeat them.
The fact that Reform's core support lies within Christian
fundamentalism, is not only an indication of the specific nature of the danger
that they pose, but ought to guide any strategy we might seek to employ in order
to neutralize and destroy the Reform Party as a political force.... <END>
People would be outraged to no end if the same thing was done by a Christian
organization using its tax exempt status to give financial aid to a Nazi. People
would demand the organization's special tax exempt status be revoked
immediately-- which should be done to B'nai Brith for providing exempt donations
to communists and communist fronts. I have provided contact information below
and I STRONGLY suggest complaints be filed today!
