I am just interested in knowing what the users on this group
think of the music of Carlos Santana (esp. the old stuff and
when he was playing really jazzy stuff - ).

I think he blended rock, afro-latin, and blues in a way that
no other musician did.

What do you guys think - just interested....

best,

Walid

I am new to this group, but it seems that this is the right thing for me.
Here in southern Germany, as well as all over Austria and some parts of
northern Italy, some people (mostly teenagers) listen to a new music style
called COSMIC Music. Local DJ's mix Afro, Reggae, Brazil and other stuff
to produce this kind of music. These DJ's sell tapes of their sessions. My problem
is that I'd like to have the original records, not the tapes, to mix my own
'COSMIC'. It's very difficult to get those records here, though.
Now my questions :

1) Does anybody know the 6 maxi's called "Afromania" ?
How can I get them?

2) Is there a maxi of Mahlatini&Mahotella Queens' "Kazet" ?

3) Does anybody know a group called Fuego ?? The song I'd need
contains the lyrics '... we are the children ..'

4) There's a song which goes '...but in the darkest night,
are star will shine so bright
A star of hope,
savior of my people. '
It's probably called Star of Hope. Does anybody know it?

5) Does anybody know the name of the song starting with
'I was born on the wings of the dawn...like a thief in the
night you came to me and stole my heart away...' ???

I'd be very glad if anybody could help me out on that. What's that 'the beat
talks' all about? Is it a magazine of some sort?? Can I subscribe to it?

Thanks for your help ,
Fabian

|Walid, I think one of the problem(?) with his music now (late 80's and the 90's)
|is its very hard, it seems, for radio stations to classify it, (what format
|to play it R&R, latin, rock or Jazz ?) although I hear it on some rock
|and "modern" jazz radio stations. So his music does not get as much air
|play as he did in the 70's

Hell, he can't even classify it. A couple of summers ago Carlos Santana
played four consecutive nights at the Paul Masson Winery in Saratoga. When
the concert was billed it said that one night would be jazz, one night rock,
one night blues, and one night latin. Which night was which wasn't divulged
until long after the tickets were sold out. I ended up getting the rock
night.

No one else comes close to doing this IMHO.

As a guitar player he ranks right along with Hendricks and clapton.

His music truly is the best.

He sounds good backing Mory Kante on _Touma_.
