Hi

Has any one got DVD (OMS) player to work on redhat 7.1 - 2.4.2 kernel

Would like to share experiences - haven't been able to get mine to work

I'll jump in this thread - I've been working on OMS for several days now.
However, I'm using RH 7 with original kernel. I'm to the point where
omi_gtk detects correctly the dvd & will immediately begin play with
sound. However, I can't seem to get enough fps (8-10 max) for viable
playback. I've got a 900mhz T-bird, tnt2 (32meg). Even upgraded X to 4.0.3
and installed Nvidia's kernel module & driver. Configured hdparm for both
hda & hdc. Can't think of what to do next. I'm a bit surprised that oms
uses so little processor for playback & negligable ram/swap.

I'm using omi-0.1.0-0.20010303.rh62, oms-0.1.2-2. Perhaps some gamers
might have tips for improving fps. DVD's currently the only reason I boot
into Win.

I have got OMS and installed, and it seem to start oms_shell and omi_gtk
seem to work okay, but nothing appears !

although my sound doesn't seem to be working proper /dev/dsp say's it can't
be opened, so I have moved to wav !

I don't get any window or picture or control panel, strange and I really
don;t want to install windows just to run DVD !

Alex - start omi_gtk from a term window & reply with pertinent
commandline output. This should tell us why you're not seeing video
output.

Good news on the DVD front. I took the below suggestion & installed vlc
from videolan.org. It works. Major congrats to the coders. Here's how I
did it, starting from a base of RH7 w/original kernel, KDE 2.1.1, Gnome
1.4, various Gnome apps as Evo .10 (just to suggest the updated libs on
my system) - all installed via rpm with NO --nodeps employed. All
dependency issues were followed thru & resolved. That said - I dl'ed the
pre-build rpm for testing purposes as well as the src rpm.

I had to upgrade SDL, which involved upgrading smpeg. SDL-1.2.0-2,
smpeg-0.4.3-1. To build from source you'll also need SDL-devel-1.2.0-2.
I also had to install aalib-1.2-5, svgallib-1.4.1-9, libgii-0.2000112803,
libggi-0.2000112803. aalib looks for an ncurses lib that's older than the
ncurses I have on my system (ncurses-5.1-2). For testing purposes I
symlinked against my existing lib and proceeded. If it worked I'd leave
it, if not I guess I'd would have to downgrade ncurses.

vlc pre-built did not work. Sound only - no video. Tried various
command-line parameters but with no success. But that's why I dl'ed the
src rpm. Ran rpm --rebuild vlc-0.2.73-1.src.rpm, then installed the new
rpms & voila! Played 'Nurse Betty' with no problems. Note - it compiled
against my Gnome libs, tho I did all this under KDE-2.1.1. At least, the
DVD player gui is Gnome. I think it'll still compile with gtk without
Gnome.

Good luck.

I've got a tnt2 32-meg nvidia with the nvidia supplied kernel module &
driver. So far, OMS playback just can't compare to videolan's vlc. The
framerate's just too slow & I can't find any documentation on how to
improve it. With 128megs ram, a 900mhz processor this should be a breeze.

At one point I had Xine video, but also choppy & not acceptable. I
watched a 2nd movie with vlc last night (terrific Woman on Top), and
noticed a slowdown as the movie progressed - but no add'l swap or ram
usage. Processor usage is more than with OMS - which may account for the
better playback. I'm going to join the vlc mailing list to try for some
tips on this - seems farther along than oms.

I still hope a gamer might see this thread & offer a suggestion on fps
improvement, since their concerns also go in this direction.
