This weekend I tried to upgrade UX 9.05 to UX 10.20, but it failed.

After upgrading to 10.01 & rebooting, HP-VUE / X-windows didn't start.
The message says:

********
* starting HP Vue on display ...
********

********
* X-server cannot be started on display ... :0
********

********
* Suspending HP Vue
* press [return] for a login prompt
********

etc.
these messages are repeated, even when I logged in and out as a root
and it is promised that VUE will start after doing that.

I checked problems in install-log, /etc/rc.config.d/netconf,
/etc/hosts and /var/adm/inetd.sec and I repaired some small things. I
also moved the Softbench-directory to /opt/softbench.old (as is
advised). Finaly I decided to install Online Diagnostics, but now I
seem to have even lost my exported NFS-partitions on this work
station! But the strange thing is that I can use Exceed to get a
normal VUE-session on my PC!

Does somebody recognize these things? And: what should I do: first
repair the problems and then patch & update to UX 10.20 or first
update and repair after that?

The upgarde from 9 to 10 is a ugly way to upgrade to HPUX 10
The coldinstall of 10.20 is mutch better and easyer, if your system configuration
is documented and your $HOMES are nfs mounted.
If you have a local password file with many users,
then save it and the userdata, coldinstall 10.20 recover
the userdata ( if you use fbackup first install the fbackuppathc).
And edit the passwordfile with and editor and put the old users into the file
The same procedure with the group file.

I hope your aplikations are nfs mounted or on a seperate disk.
