i'm sure this was talked about extensively here when this happened, but
i'm relatively new to this newsgroup and thus missed out on all the
discussion. can someone fill me in on the reason r.e.m. ended their long
association with jefferson holt? i know they didn't want to discuss it
much and were very vague about the circumstances of his departure from
the r.e.m. circle, but someone must know the reason.

TIA,

I'm sure that people know the reason, but due tothe fact that both REM and
Jefferson have declined to talk about it just about everyone that knows has
chosen not to talk about it either. It appears to be a very touchy topic, and
out of respect for both REM and Jefferson, maybe it's better we don't know!

it was rumored that Jefferson sexually harassed someone in the Athens
office and was fired. The gag order over their settlement has kept all
parties quiet about actual events though.

I'm almot sure there is no animosity between the parties, but also the
band and Jefferson had different ideas about where the band should be
headed. This also caused the divergence.

I doubt they would have removed a manager for 16 years over band
direction...most of the music industry and media has only followed up that
it was JH's office behavior that got him dismissed.

Sorry to gossip, but I have to disagree with you on this. I have heard
various stories about this (none of which I can substantiate!), including
that the locks were changed at the office to keep Jefferson out. Also,
Peter said in the Rolling Stone interview for Hi-Fi (Sept. 96?) that he
and Jefferson would never be in the same room again. I think there is a
great deal of animosity. Just my reading of the situation, and my
personal opinion, of course. I think it's incredibly sad and sort of
shocking really that they can have been so close and something so bad
happened that it blew them apart like this. I have had major rows on
(rare) occasions with old, close friends but we still manage to pull it
back because we can't imagine not doing. I am interested in what you say
about the different ideas about where the band should be heading. Do you
have any more information on that? Just curious to know what Jefferson
thought they should be doing. Thanks.

Peter has said that he never wants to be in the same room with Jefferson
again. That what happened really fucked him up. That they are calling
Bertis their "Advisor" because nobody likes the word "Manager" anymore,
least of all Bertis. And Mike said that he couldn't talk about what
happened "either legally or physically." I don't know what really
happened, but there was a great deal of animosity. Very sad.

I have to agreee with Deb 110%!! I have read on several occasions that
Peter has stated that he has no plans to be in the same room with
Jefferson ever again. I feel really sad for the entire situation. R.E.M.
and Jefferson were always the ULTIMATE band/manager situation to me. I
really don't think 'the break-up' had anything to do with what direction
the band the band wanted to go. After 16 years of being together, I'm
sure REM is exactly where they want to be. I've also read that REM don't
want to refer to Bertis as a 'manager'. They want him to be their
'advisor'.
Who knows what the hell happened. As long as Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe
keep writing beatiful and powerful songs, I will never doubt them as
'business men'.

that is one of my favorite albums! Has anyone heard the new one, _Like
Swimming_? I'll probably get it eventually, but I want to know where it
should go on the want list. I swore I wasn't going to buy any cd's
until the new Ben Lee album comes out in May, but I broke my promise
last week. I just *had* to get the new Sleater-Kinney album, an old
Noise Addict EP, a John Coltrane cd, and R.E.M. Succumbs (see, there's
actually some R.E.M. content in this message). Perhaps that's why I'm
always broke.

Yeah, I've only been able to sing along there for the past few weeks, and only
after much training and insistance that I learn to do it right.

Also, lately, whenever Stipe begins "Fly to carry each his burden" I always
add a backing "Fly, monkeys, fly!"

Hmm, I've never had trouble there. But I love that line, so I can
remember it really easily.

BTW, on a vaguely related note, how many people would be able to sing
ITEOTW without lyrics or Stipe's vocal? I know a friend of mine was
working on memorizing the entire song last year...

I can, I can! =)
In fact, I use ITEOTW as a sort of 'check' on nights when I'm partaking
in intoxicating substances; if I can still remember all the words and
'sing' them correctly, then it's time for another beer! If I can't, I
hand over the car keys. Sort of like a walking-the-straight-line test,

Whenever I hear one of these "shopping list" songs (ITEOTW, We Didn't
Start The Fire, etc.) I cannot rest until I know *all* the lyrics.
However, as the lyrics to It's the End... are much disputed (*sure* JMS
remembers all of it), I had to settle for a phonetic approximation. So, a
few years ago I listened to it a few zillion times in a row, and after the
Internet explosion I corrected some horrible misinterpretations using
various versions of the lyrics on web sites, and I can now safely say that
I could fool anyone into thinking that I know all the words to ITEOTWAWKI.
Sure, it's just a tournament, a tournament, a tournament of lies, but who
can tell the difference?
And We Didn't Start the Fire is a really, really bad song.

I was on a ferry to Ireland two years ago a couple of days after
I'd seen REM in England. There were quite a few people on the
Ferry who'd been to one of the gigs and were having somewhat
drunken REM singalongs. They didn't have the faintest clue as to
the ITEOTWAWKI words - but I was able to write out a prety
convincing version on the back of a large chocolate bar wrapper
for them. Since then I've seen a few different versions of
various lines - but I'm happy with my own version.

I have a great bootleg of a Monster show in Australia where JMS
completely forgets the words and just ends a verse half way
through by shouting f*ck. Ig he doesn't know them then what
chance have we got?

The other night I tripped a nice continental drift divide...

i am very proud to say that ITEOTWAWKI was the first R.E.M. song i ever
memorized all the words to (and in the right order). and i still know it.
becca printed me out the lyrics, nicole gave me her interpretation on the
third verse, i ignored most of them (to me, it's nice. sorry, babe!), and
i learned it as fast as my little brain allowed. we made jokes about
singing it at the high school reunion and proving to everyone that "it
wasn't just a fad". (remember, nicole?) :-)

now the lyrics are hanging next to my mirror as a little reminder thing.

actually i think it was the first R.E.M. song i fell in love with. and
the second i learned to play on the guitar! wow. what a song.

that's great-

Not to brag or anything, but I can too. Sometimes, when I'm waiting for
the bus or the subway I sing them aloud. Sometimes I sing them in the
middle of conversations. I sing it in public places. Old women join
in, but they don't know the lyrics, and actually I think they're singing
"Chicago" or maybe shitcargo or something, but hey.

One interesting thing is that I can remember all the lyrics, but I have
to sing it all the way through to figure out what the lyrics at the end
are.

Well, out of curiosity (having started the thread) I broke out my copy
of Document and gave it a try, without the lyrics sheet. Results?
Well, first verse I make it up to the beginning of the "Team by team
reporters..." line before I begin to stumble and trip. Ooops. However,
I did fine on verses 2 and 3. Evidently I am well on my way to full
ITEOTWAWKI (AIFF) mastery. :)

Here's a tip for those people trying to conquer the lyrics to ITEOTWAWKI:

1) Buy Document on vinyl.
2) Play ITEOTWAWKI on 45 speed.
3) Practice singing the song at that speed (make sure to keep an asthma inhaler
handy)
4) After you have mastered that, the regular speed will be a cinch.

I very nearly can, but always much up at the end of the first verse, (you
vitriolic, symbiotic, however the rest of it goes i can't remember!).
other than that, I've got it all down. As for a walking-the-straight-line
test, I find The One i Love much more challenging! :-P

Silent, I can. I mean, I know the words, in the correct order and all,
but I sure can't *sing* them.

In the MTV Unplugged Mr. J. Michael Stipe admits "and I'm not sure
they're right", as he introduces ITEOTWAWKI(AIFF)

Lucky you. People around me seem to believe pre-OOT-R.E.M. is, like, a
fairy-tale or something. They wouldn't know what I was talking about.
But, I could fool them too.

Probably there are more versions than people trying to learn them.
Everyone is right.

Not much, but we can't possible get them wrong, can we?

My Uncle works at the Reuters News Agency, and rang me before they
announced the following press release --

===================================================================
NEW OLYMPIC IDEALS for the new millenium ? (Trouble 2000)

"Leopold Van Heinsbruck from the International Olympics Committee
chaired a meeting in Greece, announcing the new sports for the
forthcoming Olympics.

New Competitive Sports
======================
Darts.
Cricket

Exhibition Sports
=================
R.E.M. Lyric Recital.

When Mr Van Heinsbruck was asked about the New exhibition sport, he
replied,
"this is a new age of sports, and represents the next step forward in
the sport and music crossover genre. We expect the R.E.M. lyric recital
to be an exhibition sport for the next Olympic games, before taking up
its full competitive status at the Next games.
We plan to have several styles of recital on display, such as Speed
Recital which will tax the mind and breathing capabilities of the
participant, and after considerable Internet speculation, we plan to use
the song "Its the end of the World as we Know it (and I feel fine)".

Other disciplines within this new sport have yet to be decided, but the
IOC will meet shortly to finalise the event.

Mountains laid in a line, Leonard Bernstein

Of course here at UVa it's heresy to sing anything else in place of:

...
Watch O'Neil crush crush
Uh-oh this means no beer, Cavalier, renegade, steer clear
...

which supposed refers to the end of the Easters fraternity blowout at UVa.

1) There was a large fraternity bash called Easters.
2) It was ended by decree of Dean Robert Canevari and Vice President for
Student Affairs Ernest Ern, on December 1, 1985.
3) The President at the time was... Robert O'Neil, who succeeded Frank Hereford.

* Knox College, in Illinois. A friend of mine (who goes to Knox) claims
that this line refers to a concert they gave at Knox; after the show they
ended up dropping acid at a fraternity house.

This thread is just too odd...

... because someone just sent me a long list of "you know you're a child
of the '80s when..."

one point, --- guesses anyone??

something like "you actually sat down and learned the lyrics to ITEOTWAWKI"

really. the funny had some other pretty amusing stuff on it too, but that
one was the best! (of course)

lucy

who didn't get more than half of the funny, so i guess im only partly a
child of the '80s....

I've got that bootleg, now is it great show because he swears or a great
show because it's a great concert? The MegaTour double CD, that's what
I'm talking about. If you're familiar with the concert, he also butchers
Star69 pretty bad too.
