I disagree with your disagreed. But since I only know the songs that were
released, I may be wrong. What songs are his best, in your opinion?

The most underrated blues musician I've ever had the great pleasure of
hearing is a guy by the name of "Bullet" Bill Tarsha. He plays (or played)
chromatic harp in a band out of Phoenix, AZ called the Rocket 88's. Don't
know if they are still around.

I've only got 2 recordings of the band, "Full Automatic" on vinyl and a
cassette by Big Jay McNeeley with the Rocket 88's. Actually, if anyone
knows where I can get more material by the Rocket 88's, please e-mail me
(remove the ANTI-SPAM).

Thanks.

Spoken like a true Chicagoan! Better add Dave Myers to that list before
he finds out you excluded him - You know how sensitive he is.

BTW, saw him Saturday night and he sends his regards to ya. :)

I believe that the current environment tends to overrate most players from
Chicago and the Delta and underrates players from everyhwere else. There are
whole galaxies of underrated blues stars in Houston and Dallas. Sadly they
have to leave town to get record deals (Johnny Copeland, Albert Collins) and
publicity. But for every JC or AC that has left town, there is a Gloria
Edwards or a Joe Hughes or a Pete Mayes or an Oscar Perry who hasn't... (that
is to name just a few who are still in Houston). Dallas is a little better
organized, but they still don't get the props they are due either. To me, it
isn't about talent. The best of Houston is just as good as the best in
Chicago. It's about perception, it's about publicity, it's about money, and
business.

Every region in the country is full of underrated musicians. Bands working
hard for little or no recognition. You could go on forever, naming your
favorite regional act that hasn't gotten any respect. My favorite underrated
band, The Nighthawks are on my list. 30 years of club dates and never had a
major label deal. As for overratted musicians/bands the list must include
Kenny Wayne Shepard and Jonny Lang. Those two guys haven't done anything that
hasn't been done before and done better by somebody else.

A crack at my review no doubt. Robert Cray isn't just blues, he's
really more Soul now in the Hi/Stax vein, with some blues thrown in.
Taken as a whole package he's great. Not the best guitar player,
but certainly one of the most soulfull, and his singing just puts it
way over the top for me.
If you like the older soul singers like OV Wright and James Carr,
it's hard not to like Robert. :)

Overrated:

I agree, Robert Cray, way overrated. I saw him in 1995 at the Philly Blues
Festival. He was the headliner and people were leaving. Me being one of
them.

Buddy Guy I think is also overrated. I made a previous post about him and I
think he is a good guitar player not a great guitar player. All style no
that much subsatnce in my opinion. I think Jimmie Vaughan (underrated) is
much better. SRV would blow Buddy away any night of the week.

Koko Taylor

Billie Holiday - I know I am going to get shit for this one but I am a
singer, a blues singer. I have been singing blues for about 12 years. I
bought hte CD's and listened, listened, listened. I am sorry she does
nothing for me at all. Nothing. I almost feel the same way about Bessie
Smith but to her credit I have not listened to her all that much.

Underrated:

Hound Dog Taylor
Roosevelt Sykes
Jimmy Reed
Etta James
Slim Harpo

John Campbell - unfortunately he died way too young. I saw him at the Beacon
Theatere in NYC. I was then going to see him open for Buddy at the Central
Park Blues Festival and he died the night before the show. The show was on a
Saturday afternoon and he died of a heart attack the night before. What a
complete shame and a waste. He could play his ass off!

Thanks,

Musicians have always been underrated and
overrated. Luck always has a part
in anyone's success as a musician. We all know
local musicians who are more
talented than many who are household names in
music. Now Robert Cray is a fine
guitar player, with a super voice. He has chosen
more of a pop route to be more
commercially successful, so that turns blues
purists off. I saw him about a year
ago and really enjoyed the show. He doesn't do any
of the cliche things like
wander wireless through the audience, or talk
between songs, or have his band
warm up for half an hour before he comes out, but
he does have a lot of talent.
I think his voice is just great.

Shelle,
just got home from working the Checkerboard with Primer, saw the post you
made, I forgot to put dave up there by accident, but we can't forget Louis
Myers too, he was unbelievable himself.
On a side note, we got Dave up to play bass with us tonight at the
Checkerboard, its always fun when Dave decides he wants to play.

!. Yeah, Campbell was a big guy, well over 6ft tall. I do not know the exact
date of his death. It was definitely in the summer that I know, probably
around 1994-95

2. Bessie Smith. As I said, I cannot make a complete determination on her
style and voice because I have not fully listened to her. I am going out
today as a matter of fact to p/u a Columbia CD by her

Underrated..
1.Little Milton..a great singer and guitarist.
2.Jr Watson..a style all his own.
3.Roy Gaines..playing with T-Bone and
Gatemouth Brown when you are 15..you
better be good.
4.Lurrie Bell..check out his recent Delmark.CD's..he is great.
5.Smokey Wilson..another great guitarist
and singer..his vocals remind me of a
Howlin Wolf, Elmore James combination.
6.Duke Robbillard..he seems to be able
to play everything and what a singer.

Underrated, IMHO:

John Primer
W.C. Clark
Guitar Slim
James Harman
BIG JACK JOHNSON
Willie Kent
Magic Slim
Otis Rush
Tad Robinson

At least these are a few artists I have spinning regularly and repeatedly.

The most underreted guitar player:
Little Charlie Baty.
If you've seen him play, you know why. If you haven't, you should go and
see why. I can think of no other blues guitarist who can start a set with
Cherokee, play some Jimmy Bryant stuff, throw in Cliff Gallup, smoke like
"old" Buddy Guy and finish a set with Albert Collins' "Frosty". All the
while backing up Rick Estrin's harmonica like Lockwood & Tucker.
There is NONE better (in my humble opinion).

Thanks,
Aaron King

Lots of underrated players in Chicago too.

These days, it's the west coast and Austin, TX players that are overrated
IMHO.

On guitar I'll give you that, but on voice - Cray has one of the most
beautiful voices around for blues and soul. It's like something out of
Memphis in the 1960s... It just sends your heart a-flutter.
