My second Sears Diehard just leaked, causing a bit of rust in the area
near the
battery. No more Diehards for me. Any suggestions as to the best
battery,
construction-wise? And no, I won't hacksaw one apart to determine the
best
one. :-)

Want the best, get an Optima sealed battery. Best battery there is.

The name of the "best" battery is somewhere in that can of worms you
just opened. I have used Diehards for years with no leakage. On
another vehicle I used to own, I had about 7 years service from a 5
year Delco. I generally don't use my battery for jump-starting stuff,
just in "emergencies". When I drove freight trucks, I hauled several
loads of batteries from the various GBC (General Battery Corporation)
factorys and delivered them to the various GBC warehouses. The
warehouses had several "brand name" labels that were stuck onto the
batteries, depending on who the customer was. Granted, these were
mostly "store brand" labels such as for Farm Bureau. I don't recall
seeing any Delco or Diehard labels. I suppose their batteries are
labeled at the factory.

As for the construction, I personally don't like a flimsy-feeling
case. Seems too thin to be able to take much stress and strain.

I don't know who makes the Diehard brand. I am under the impression
they are made under contract to whomever gives Sears the best price.
No proof of this though.

I use the largest CCA (cold crankiong amperes) battery that will fit
in the holder. That may be overkill, but as Hunter was fond of
saying, "Works for me".

Get the Optima if you can afford it. They don't give them away. Make a
capacitive discharge battery charger and pull it out of your truck once a
year and charge it for a day. I've seen batteries last 10-12 years this way.
Mine is 5 years now.

That's easy...

Optima.

Tried one and will never go back to 'wet' batteries.
Have four of them now. When the wet battery in the boat
dies, that will make five.

I don't work for Optima, not connected in any way.
Just like the product.

Agreed. I use only Optimas. Lesser batteries just aren't worth the
hassles.

OEM demands for small, lightweight, low-cost radiators is what happened
there. Valeo's radiators like the one in my '91 Spirit R/T are of much the
same construction technique as the JC unit in the Taurus/Sable, has
similar problems.

OTOH, the all-brass unit in my '65 D'Valiant has experienced no such
problems...

I was an Exideproponent until we started stocking Optima batteries.
Nice!

Keep the Dears Sie-Hard, manufactured by Johnson Controls.

Here's what, Johnson Controls manufactures the Ford Taurus/Sable
radiators. O.K.; what happened here?

Not that I am any defender of Sears, but have you checked your charging system
to make sure it is not overcharging the battery?

As for batteries in general, I find Interstate works well for the money.

At 2-3 times the price, Optimas had better be nice. But if they're of
superior quality, why aren't they warranted better than $50-60 Autozone
or Wal-Mart batteries or include free emergency jump start service?

How recent is your information? I think Exide makes all but one model of
Sears Diehard now, and that one is made by Delco.

Hi Pete,If I remember correctly.... Most aftermarket batteries contain a
compound called antimony (I think the spelling is correct). The factory
batteries, while more expensive, do not contain this compound. It is
antimony that causes the leakage and corrosion (provided your alternator
isn't overcharging)
I have an automotive/racing shop, and we go through a lot of batteries. We
have found the same, and we use the GM batteries. I haven't had any
problems with corrosion or leakage.
Hope this helps..

According to both the October issue of Consumer Reports and
Johnson Controls http://www.johnsoncontrols.com/bg/standauto.htm
the Diehard is made mostly by Exide but also by AC/Delco, but JC
does not make them.

I bought an Autozone Duralast Gold, because JC makes it. Thanks
for all the help, guys.

This morning.

I'm not into batteries as a business, only as a convenience. I am
starting to think batteries are similar to VCAR's, three
manufacturers, two-dozen labels. When I see the J-C semi-truck parked
in front of the service bay hauling out every type of Dears' Sie-Hard
produced, you can capture the theme. My '78 K5 427 Blazer has always,
always lit off on the first piston. It has over a quarter-million
miles on it, and everything electrical (yes, starter and alternator)
sans the battery. Every 18 months I take out my won't- hold- a- charge
Sie Hard, have it brought to Dears', pay the $12.90, and get a new
one. I have had one Exide come back, I replaced it under warranty
no-charge, even though we found the trunk light stuck on.

The Interstate product has some great new Technology in the batteries,
but the Optima, twicw the money and with a 36 month don't give it a
thought warranty? Worth a tow, eh?

ditto. only I remove the tray and everything else I can in the vicinity of
the battery to make more room, then wedge a piece of plywood in there for the
battery to sit on, then install the biggest battery with the highest CCA I
can find that fits in there. then I place a hefty piece of closed-cell foam
(like ensolite) on top of the battery so that the hood presses down on it and
holds the battery in place. also keeps the top of the battery VERY clean.
After 3 to 4 years, I take the battery out of my wife's car, buy her a new
one, and put the used one in my truck. So I typically get 6 to 8 years out
of each battery with absolutely no problems. Oh - once a year in the summer
I spray the top of the battery with a solution of baking soda and water, then
hose it off.

and the winters around here get down to -25F sometimes.

Just FYI, but antimony is an element, not a compound.

JCI made the original DieHards (unsealed) and lost the contract to AC
Delco about four years ago. Sears branded the AC Delcos (sealed) with
the Gold tag and the other DieHards the were be acquired mostly from
Exide. A couple of years ago, Sears decided to start using JCI to
make their DieHard Gold (unsealed) batteries. JCI also makes Duralast
for AutoZone and a bunch more. Optima are two and one half times the
cost of a Durlast, but a very good battery. Interstate is also
selling the private labled Optima's.
