I've just done a clean install of Windows 98 on my new laptop. I then
updated my version of Internet Explorer to v5.5. Then I added AOL 6.0 to
my laptop. The next time I started IE the icon in the upper right-hand
corner was the icon for AOL and the header in the browser said Internet
Explorer brought to you by AOL!

Hey, what's the deal? Has Microsoft sold out to Warner?

How do I get the IE icon back? I HATE that AOL icon!

Help? Anyone?

Hi Carrie,

If you don't mind editing the registry a bit, that's fairly easy to get rid
of. And no, ms didn't sell out to TW, Aol just modified it a bit for you so
that they could run an ad on your machine. Real nice of them isn't it?

Anyhow,

Start/run regedit,

Navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

In the right pane. look for a string that reads Window Title, double click
it to change the name or just delete it.

If it doesn't exist and you want to add to the IE title bar (like "brought
to you by Carrie"), right-click in the right pane and select new-->string.
Call it Window Title, then double click it and put whatever you wish to have
it called in the value line.

For OE, it's basically the same, but it's located here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{CLSID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0

The CLSID part differs from machine to machine, and there may be more than
one, so you will have to search a bit. The only other difference is that the
string is called Windowtitle with no space between them.

Close regedit and open new IE window, the change should be immediate.
