Game Show Network in winning form
By Melissa Grego
HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - In his ninth month on the job, Game Show Network (GSN)
president Rich Cronin is advancing from the preliminary rounds of original
program development to the bonus round.
Cronin told Daily Variety that GSN is on track to roll out two series by early
April, with two or three other shows debuting in the summer and another two or
three in fall. GSN has more than 20 projects in various stages of development,
and three pilots are being tested around the country.
They started from scratch, as Cronin kept just one existing GSN original show
-- ``Hollywood Showdown'' -- in the mix when he arrived in May. GSN has since
decided against going forward on new episodes of ``Showdown.''
Among the shows in development is ``Friend or Foe.'' A presentation of the
concept was shot over the weekend, and testing gets under way Friday. It tests
contestants' knowledge and how much they trust their partner.
In each game, one team of two goes to a bonus round where they secretly decide
whether their partner is a ``friend'' or a ``foe.'' If both say ``friend,''
they split the winnings. If one says ``foe'' and the other ``friend,'' the
``foe'' goes home with the money. If both are ``foes,'' they both go home
empty-handed.
GSN also has been looking at pilots that already have been developed around
town, including ``Russian Roulette,'' a tentatively titled quizzer that would
include a heart monitor. No deal has been set for that show.
GSN, which is available in more than 43 million cable homes, saw primetime
household ratings jump 25% in the year to December 2001.

Are these studios just itching for a lawsuit? That makes three of these
shows in "development", doesn't it?

I've got a portable lie detector, so it wouldn't be a farfetched possibility
for the next GSC. :-)

It turns out that according to a Zap2It story, "Russian Roulette,"
which has been picked up by GSN for an April premiere, has nothing to
do with heart monitors. It's five contestants challenging each other
to answer general-knowledge questions. If they're eliminated, the
contestant pulls a lever on his podium and he takes a "Laugh-In" fall
through the platform.
It's reminiscent to me of those break-away chairs on the Joe Pyne
"Showdown" back in the 60s. For you kids, two related teams competed
to be the last man standing. Miss a question, the break-away chair
parted and the contestant ducked to the floor while organist Arlo
Hults hit a tympani next to his Hammond and Joe Pyne, the infamous
radio and TV talk show host known for telling callers to "go gargle
with razor blades," insulted him. Heatter-Quigley had a show before
its time--it only lasted maybe 13 weeks on NBC in 1966, but one could
easily see Pyne standing where Anne Robinson and George Gray stand
today on "TWL."
