Midwest Micro- The Mail Order from Hell

My experiences ordering a simple peripheral from what bills
itself as a company that will "do whatever it takes to keep you
happy."

The short version: I ordered an Epson actionlaser 1500 in late
May. It is now September and all I have is a broken Brother
printer sitting waiting for UPS to pick it up, and a promise that
I may get a refund check by the first week in October.

The long version.

I have been buying computer equipment for many years from many
vendors, for the federal government, for several Universities and
for myself. I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH INCOMPETENCE AND DISREGARD FOR
THE CUSTOMER from any computer retailer.

1. They took forever to ship.
2. They shipped to the wrong address.
3. They insisted they had shipped to the right address, and I had
to prove to them they hadn't.
4. They promised to reship a new unit but didn't. In the meantime
the item went out of stock.
5. They gave contradictory advice about how they were going to
resolve the problem, bouncing us endlessly from sales to customer
service and back, each time with long waits.
6. They finally took an order for a replacement printer - but it
took them a week to apply the old credit to the new sale. Go
figure! Shipped the new printer UPS slow - took more than a week.
7. The new printer arrived broken (badly packaged).
8. They refused to accept reponsability and suggested it was my
fault it was not working.
9. Refused to issue replacement or refund until the unit was
returned and they could check it - a process taking more than two
weeks.
10. Refused to issue the refund check to my department - they
will only send it to accounts payable with no account number on
it - so we will have to call accounts payable every day for two
weeks hoping to catch the check before it gets cashed.

Their salespeople are surly and bureaucratic - their reponse to
every suggestion is "this is the way we do it." They will not let
you speak to a supervisor.

The equipment is nicely priced. I am writing this on one of their
computers - its a fine unit at an excellent price. But their
sales and shipping and accounting departments are grossly
incompetent. If anything goes wrong, you will suffer great
torment. I WISH I HAD NEVER HEARD THEIR NAME. TAKE HEED - STAY

Richard,

I found the letter you wrote and in concerns me deeply. The situation
definitely sounds as if it has not been handled properly up to this
point. Do you have the names of any of the reps that you spoke with
concerning the issue? I’m going to forward a copy of this letter to
the Customer Service/Tech Support Manager. If you could please get me
the order number(s) and RA#(s) in question along with the Customer
number the order(s) were placed under I’d like to try and see if I
can’t help out.
