Anyone have ANY idea where to get some genuine (ie good) chicken fried
steak in SF Valley/LA? I have a craving...

No, but in Encino is a microbrewery called "Rock Bottom" that serves the best.
Rock Bottom is alsoon Pine Ave. in Long Beach.

If you're hungry enough, Claim Jumper serves and enormous chicken fried
steak dinner (or is it chicken fried chicken?) -- the thing is splayed
out all over a big plate on top of a heap o' mashed potatoes and other
sides.

I'm not a coffee shop regular, but I've always liked chicken fried steak
from IHOP, Denny's, and Norm's. I mean, it's chicken fried steak, not
pheasant under glass.

It's kind of a schlepp, but the only even
acceptable chicken-fried steak around
here is at the Pines, an incredible diner
on Pearblossom Highway near Palmdale.
Breakfast and lunch only; about 30 minutes
from the Valley. It's a big mama, but
incredibly crunchy, and a real steak.

Other than that, the c-f steak at Furr's
Cafeteria is almost ok--Furr's has a strong
Southern-truck-driver bias to
its ``cuisine,'' and there's a Texas roadhouse
in Azusa (called Taste of Texas, I think)
that isn't bad.

Die hards will want to try the chicken fried
steak at Emeril Lagasse's new
Delmonico steakhouse in the new Venetian
in Las Vegas...

I love the Pines (though I haven't actually eaten there in the 4
years since I've moved back to the city from the Antelope Valley). I
never tried their chicken-fried steak, though. I still pine for
their seasonal fresh peach pancake (as gigantic as Dinah's apple
pancake and not nearly as sickly sweet) and just about anything that
they make for breakfast. I don't know if they still do it; but when
I was a regular there for breakfast they were raising hogs in the
back, feeding them with rich scraps from the tables, and then sending
them down below to be butchered and turned into the tastiest bacon,
sausage and ham I've ever eaten. The owner-chef was always
threatening to sell the place and leave town; so I don't know if
they're still going. I really liked his two daughters who were the
regular waitresses, too.

As for chicken-fried steak: I was eating at Nichols in the Marina
tonight (following a suggestion from la.eats in a previous Jerry's
Deli thread) and I noticed that they had it on the regular menu. I'm
certainly not an aficionado of this dish, and would never choose to
order it. But considering how well Nichols prepares this type of
food, I wouldn't be surprised if they do a good job.

The drive to the Pines Cafe is well worth the trip! Thanks for the tip.
Not only is the chicken fried steak GREAT but the atmosphere is pure 40 low
scale diner.
( They Got an A from the health department.)

My SO and I took the trip from LAX area as an outing. We WILL go back.

If you like a huge portion go to Chris and Pitts on Victory and
Fulton. Most ppl can eat only half. a great bargain since I'll eat
the other half for another meal.

Please understand my comment about "low scale diner" ment that it is not a
glitzy imitation. It is the real thing and GREAT. Also it is more of a cafe
than a diner. In no way was it ment to be a put down!

Enjoy
