Could someone please suggest some books on Persian for me to read? Also, are
there any schools in the Los Angeles/Pasadena area that have classes on
Elementary Persian this summer? And I mean classes for adults not for little
kids. Thanks.

Hi Steven,

This post contains useful links to Persian
learning resources on the net which I have
arranged to help the beginners.

You can do your own research. Do bear in
mind that when you are on the Net, you are
amidst the biggest library in history. It doesn't
take much to find exactly what you need to
know by applying basic research skills, without
relying on others. Start from here and make
your way up! :)

Best,

UCLA has one of the top Persian instruction programs in the whole of the
United States. Check with them.

Also, pick up W.M. Thackston's *Introduction to Persian* (Bethesda: 1992).
There's several very good Persian bookstores on Westwood Blvd you can get
them through. Try Sherkat-e Ketab (Ketab Corp.) which used to be right
across the street from Borders Books & Music.

cheers,
Nima

Paul,

I hope you will find Persian an easier language
to learn than it appears at first. My wife (English)
not only learnt to speak good Persian in less than
one year (by persisting in communicating with
me in Persian), she also learnt Persian calligraphy,
miniature painting, plus a vast repertory in Persian
cuisine that puts the best of Persian girls to shame!
I mean it! ... Absolutely no contest ... She is a knock
out when it comes to thing Persian! (She held a
charity Persian cookery evening in our village hall
a couple of weeks ago and converted a few dozen
natives to "Ghormeh Sabzi" and "Fesenjan" cult! :)
Now, it is your turn to do some research on those
recipe! ;)

I guess when you love something bad enough,
you will give it your best shot. I too enjoy learning
about languages and different cultures.

Oh! ... Sorry for mixing up your name! I was being
urged to join the family for "tea" and wrote in a dash.

Regards,

Shahin

Sorry, Nima! You are late by two years mate! :)

If you want to come to the UK for the honourable
purpose of finding someone to share your life
with, go north (Lancashire; Yorkshire; Tyneside/
Geordies). They are about the friendliest, most
decent, industrious, hardy, unassuming, laconic
and down right earthy people that you are likely to
meet. The salt of the earth; plus an acerbic sense
of humour to go with it. You'll love northerners! :)

Hi Nima,

Do you think Sherkat-e Ketab might have any English translations of books by
Ahmad Kasravi?

Thanks.

Hi Nima,

They might. Check. I know his "On Shi'ism" (Shi'e-gari) has been translated
into English. If they don't have it, I'm sure they can always get it for
you.

cheers,
Nima
