AOL and Internet Update

For the many of you who have requested an update on where we are with
releasing our next major Internet connections (Newsgroups and Databases) --

As I'm sure many of you have noticed, we have been experiencing some system
performance problems for the past month or so. These problems have been
caused by software bottlenecks that have manifested themselves in various and
alternating ways, such as slowness of certain functions (like mail sending
and IMs,) delays in logging in and logging off, and in the snappiness of
response in People Connection.

Our programming team is busy tweaking our system software to alleviate these
problems (with People Connection being our latest area of focus), and many of
you have reported that you have seen a marked improvement in recent weeks.

Making sure our system performs up to our customers' expectations is our
highest priority right now -- although this has resulted in delays in
releasing certain features. (Our 9600 baud service was a recent example. )
Although we had planned on putting our Internet Newsgroups on the
"production" system this week (so that you could try them out in the Internet
Center), we made the decision to delay this step to concentrate on our system
software.

As a result, we will not be releasing Newsgroups in January as promised. Our
current estimate is that we can make them available by middle of February,
with Databases following later in the month. I'm as frustrated as you are,
because I have been playing with these features on our test system, and we
are all anxious to hear your feedback on improvements. We're already getting
psyched to put together "feature lists" for "version 2" of our expanded
connections, so our Internet Team here at AOL is quite anxious to get the
first versions out the door.

I hope you agree with our decision to focus on the system first, with
secondary priority on the expanded Internet services. As we learn more about
when we can make these features available, I'll post updates here.

In the event my three telephone calls to a non 1-800 number, two letters
and email didn't get your attention maybe this will. AOL sucks! You make this
ce you make them jump thru
hoops trying to cancel the service. If you had "users" in mind and trying
to retain customers you would have provided the same ease of cancelling your
service as you did suckering people into it. I would have checked AOL out at
a later date for the GUI but after what you people put me thru trying to cancel
yout service I would rather send my email thru the US Postal service. You
folks give a real bad name to on-line services. Get you act together!!!!!
