Dealing With Occupier Prohibited: Egyptian Mufti

By Subhi Mejahid, IOL Correspondent

CAIRO, November 2 (IslamOnline.net) - Egypt's Mufti Sheikh Ali Gum'a
dismissed as haram (religiously prohibited) dealings with states carrying
out acts of aggression on Islamic countries, in a reference to the
Anglo-American occupation of oil-rich Iraq.

"The current aggression on Iraq is unacceptable and must be brought to an
end as soon as possible.

"Resisting such aggression is a crystal-clear right that must not be
denied," asserted the top scholar.

Few days after he was appointed to the prestigious post in September, Gum'a
reiterated unwavering support for the Iraqi resistance against the U.S.-led
occupation.

He drew a clear line of separation between "legitimate resistance where
people defend themselves, honor, dignity and land, on one hand, and
terrorism on the other".

Al-Azhar, the highest seat of learning for Sunni Islam, was to question one
of its scholars over a fatwa banning dealings with the U.S.-installed
Governing Council.

"No decision was taken to suspend or lay off Sheikh Nabawi Mohamad al-Ish.
There will be an internal investigation only," a spokesman for Al-Azhar told
Egypt's state-run MENA news agency Thursday, August 28.

Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Mohammad Sayyed Tantawi had asserted that "no
Egyptian scholar has the right to pass verdict on the affairs of another
country."

Ish issued a fatwa banning Arab countries from dealing with the Governing
Council, saying the U.S.-backed body is "illegitimate".

"The council lacks religious and secular legitimacy, as it had been imposed
on the Iraqis under the power of occupation and does not conform to Islam's
established principle of shura (counseling)," read his fatwa.

However, Sheikh Faysal Mulawy, leader of the Lebanese Islamic group and a
prominent politician, concluded that Iraqis could deal with the Council, but
they have also to resist the occupation forces.

"Resistance is one part of the story, which does not terminate another one;
having to deal with the occupier," he said in a study a copy of which was
sent to IslamOnline.net.

It is also haram to support brutal dictatorships. The coalition forces are
there to remove the corrupt Hussein regime and now safeguard the new
government, something even Arabs and moslems could not do.

It is not aggression but liberation from fascism.

There is no need for any further violence and militancy whatsoever as the
Saddam Hussein regime is out of power and the Iraqi people are working to
form their own constitution and government.

The council are all Iraqis from a cross section of all religions and
cultures including Shiite and Sunni.

If it wasn't for the occupier there would be no law and order and no
framework for the new government. it would be back to terrorism, fascism and
dictatorship as usual. It is time for a new future of construction and peace
for the people and children of Iraq not more destruction and hatred.

Hi I'm not a regular here but I thought I'd post to correct any
lingering misconceptions about the riverSbendblog and now
riverbendblogS still being promoted by a vehemently anti-free speech
activist on Usenet. It appears as of a few days ago he stopped using
the nym "Diego Gastor" and is now using "be...@buba.de" or as here
"at...@bagh.dad". Although this individual is very proWar this is not
a pro or anti war issue. It's about American and universal values
like fair play, liberty, freedom of expression and honesty. Yes I am
a liberal, but many who are not liberals have also denounced the
riverSbend smearblogger for his underhand tactics and intent.

If proof were needed of that it has become public knowledge in the
last few days that Wendy McElroy, a Fox News contributor is vigorously
pursuing a complaint against the riverSbendblog as she fears her
professional reputation may have been damaged by the blogger's falsely
representing an affiliation with her. Zeyad, the very pro-US Iraqi
blogger, who writes at Healing Iraq has described the riverSbendblog
as "deplorable" in his blog. On top of that *Centcom* itself has
issued a warning to the riverSbend blogger to stop using its graphics
because they recognise that he is fighting against the very rights
they are promoting in Iraq.

It seems incredible to me that even after this strong message from the
US military itself this sorry individual is continuing to promote his
anti-free speech agenda.

If you want to hear genuine voices from Iraq read
riverbendblog.blogspot.com (note - no S) or read
healingiraq.blogspot.com which represent a couple of disparate voices.
But if you do cast a glance over riverSbendblog.blogspot.com, please
bear in mind it is the work of an unAmerican, anti-free speech
embittered old man to whom honesty, integrity and honour are
apparently foreign concepts.

My blog Bending Truth covers this matter in detail at
suzerainty.blogspot.com but here are several other write ups
throughout the web on riverSbendblog. I won't deny that many of these
are from the left. But not all are, and the voice of disgust against
riverSbendblog and its promoter is quite unanimous. If you do a
google on riverSbendblog and try to find a positive write-up, you will
have your work cut out

(Note the riverSbendblog used to look much more like the genuine Iraqi
riverbendblog, only under pressure from Bending Truth did the promoter
alter it, but the odour of bad intentions is still clear in its
promotion. The riverSbendblogger has never shown any remorse or made
an attempt to apologist for his shameful and repeated offences)

A lot of people over at Atrios's blog -- including me -- have been
wondering what's up with a blog called Riversbend that supposedly
posts from Iraq. There was already a very similar site called
Riverbend, run by a woman in Iraq, but it didn't have the 'S' in the
middle, and it tended to attack Halliburton bidding practices rather
than copy optimistic passages from Thomas Friedman.

Given the unbelievably slimy nature of his support for the war--it's
all well and good to be pro-liberation and pro-free-Iraq, but not at
the expense of the newfound free speech of an actual Iraqi
person--plus the inherent creepiness of all old guys who pretend to be
young women on the Internet...

That toad who tried to hijack Riverbend's blog with one called
"Riversbend" turns out to be a longtime internet shit-stirrer named
"Troy", some sort of obnoxious dittohead active with the NRA. Now, I
have no particular use for Riverbend, myself - I think she's a
sniveling lightweight - but impersonating someone online is a vile and
stupid act, and should be roundly denounced.

The original site is riverbend.blogspot.com , and the new one is
riverSbend.blogspot.com, just one letter's difference. The second site
is nearly identical in layout, font, etc., obviously trying to trick
people into thinking that these are the words and feelings of river
herself. Pretty scummy, if you ask me.

There is currently a conflict between riverbendblog.blogspot.com, an
Iraqi woman, and riverSbendblog.blogspot.com, a 70 year old Republican
activist who is copying Riverbend's blog and changing the message. The
theory is that the Riversbend blogger hopes to mislead people seeking
Riverbend to come to his site instead, because he so thoroughly
disagrees with what the Iraqi woman is saying. On a quick glance you
might not realize you were on the wrong site.

I think its deplorable that the author of riverSbendblog.blogspot.com
assumed Riverbend's identity, used graphics that are not his own,
tried to give the impression that he is an Iraqi, and obviously to

In a bizarre, yet telling, twist to the Baghdad Burning blog story, a
spoof of the popular blog sprung up on September 11 of this year. The
real Baghdad Burning blog's URL is http://riverbendblog.blogspot.com/.
The spoof version is at http://riversbendblog.blogspot.com. It is (or

What are the chances this Iraqi blogger was telling the truth about a $50,000,000 New Diyala Bridge contract?
