Microsoft Donates Another $100,000 to GOP

The Associated Press, May 29, 1998

WASHINGTON (AP)--Microsoft Corp., the giant software company
being sued by the Justice Department and 20 states for alleged
antitrust violations, gave $100,000 to the Republican National
Committee last month--the company's second large donation to
the GOP in two months.

The April 15 contribution of $100,000 was sandwiched between two
events on Capitol Hill, according to documents filed with the Federal
Election Commission.

In March, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates testified before the
Republican-dominated Senate Judiciary Committee, after which the
company gave the National Republican Senatorial Committee $99,000
worth of computer equipment.

In May, Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., set up a House GOP task force
on the high technology industry.

Including the latest contribution, Microsoft has given almost $400,
000 to both political parties between Jan. 1, 1997, and April 30,
1998--more money than it gave in the previous six years combined,
according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

"It has been a strategy to increase our participation in the policy
and political process to ensure that our position is known and
understood," Microsoft spokesman Jim Cullinan said Friday. "We
believe that this is an appropriate way to do so."

One of Microsoft's competitors, Sun Microsystems, gave the RNC
$2,000 in April.

The stepped-up contributions come at a time when Microsoft, whose
Windows software runs on 90 percent of the world's desktop computers,
is under fire for alleged anti-competitive practices. The antitrust
lawsuit is scheduled to be heard Sept. 8 in U.S. District Court.

Meanwhile, the House Republican majority plans to take its own
look at the high-tech industry. Last week, Gingrich named a 13-
member task force, chaired by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va.

"As we prepare for and invest in the 21st century, it is vital
that we focus on new technologies and their increasing impact on
our everyday lives," Gingrich said in announcing the task force.

But Larry Makinson, director of the Center for Responsive Politics,
contended the task force is designed to attract contributions from
the high-tech industry in addition to ideas.

"They're not reaching out just for ideas," Makinson said. "Hopefully,
money will come with the ideas. Every member of the high-tech industry

understands what's meant here: Yes, they can give their ideas and
yes, their contributions will be cheerfully accepted at the same
time."

Meanwhile, records filed with the FEC showed companies with interests
in legislation moving through Congress also made large contributions
last month.

--As the alcohol industry fought a proposed national standard for
drunken driving, Anheuser-Busch, which makes Budweiser beer, gave
$50,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, E&J Gallo
Winery gave $50,000 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign
Committee, and Seagram Co. contributed $1,000 to the National
Republican Senatorial Committee. The drunken driving standard was
dropped from the highway bill passed shortly before the Memorial Day
recess.

--As the House was considering legislation lifting Depression-era
barriers separating banking, securities and insurance--which
it passed it May--the House Democrats received $30,000 from Bank
of America; the Senate Republicans received $50,000 from insurer
American International Group; the Senate Democrats took in $25,
000 from Travelers Corp.; and the Republican National Committee
received $100,000 from securities investor Max C. Chapman.

Legislation to stall or ban export licenses for the
satellites to China would be "a serious mistake . . . that
could jeopardize the important commercial and national
security interests we are seeking to advance in our
approach,"

That's true. You buy a few Republicans (they're cheap) and you can
break all the laws you want. It's the libertarian way!

1) Jesse Unruh said "money is the mothers' milk of politics..."
He said it when he was Assembly speaker, right after he
made a deal with new Governor Ronald Reagan, to do away
with the California Open Primary, in 1966. He and Reagan
made the deal in order to consolidate their political power
within their respective parties, without being bothered
by the likes of pesky voter Primary preferences. Reagan was
a Conservative (goldwater) Republican; Unruh was a Liberal
(Kennedy) Democrat-- and arguably the most effective California
Speaker of the last hundred years.

This Tuesday, the State of California will have the privilege
of voting in the first Open Primary since Unruh and Reagan
made their deal. We did away with it two years ago, using
our right to put Propositions on the ballot that take care
of things that Politicians like Unruh and Reagan won't.

I know; more than you wanted to know.

2) Microsoft has given lots of dough to both parties over the last
three years. Gates just has no sense when it comes to politics,
and this isn't an area where he promises to become a quick
learner.

3) Hasn't Microsoft hired Judge Bork to be a lobbyist, or have I got
something backward? I know that Senator Bob Dole is the lead
for the opposition, the last I heard.

What a surprize - the Clintoon administration
launches a huge, organized attack on Microsoft,
and then liberals act surprized when Microsoft
donates money to the GOP. Well, duh.

There is a clear "cause and effect" here, boobs.

I have to laugh. ... pretty good; but 'Clintoon' is a
little corny.

... but, uh-- you do understand, don't you, that Microsoft's
biggest corporate critics are Conservative/Libertarian
Republicans (one is currently running for the Repug Senate
nomination to run against Barbara Boxer); and the guys leading
the charge against Microsoft are:

*) Orin Hatch, that well-known Stalinist from the
Soviet of Utah

*) Bob Dole, that Trotskyite terrorist viagra-sniffer of
late from the US Senate.

With guys arrayed against me like that; I think I'd give a
few more sheckels to the Dems.

Actually, Dole and Bork are now associated with an anti-M$
lobbying effort that calls itself ProComp.

The Libertarian Party was right about Bork way back when Reagan nominated
him for the Supreme Court. At the end of their careers, Bork and Dole
turned out to be nothing but a couple of unprincipled WHORES.

It sounds like a large group of over-priviledged and arrogant
libertarian computer nerdlings just wok up and realized that they were
in a society, and yes, despite their computer expertize and money, if
they proved more a burden than a benefit to that society, it could,
and would hurt them.

So now they are trying the American conservative way: they are trying
to bribe their way out of trouble.
