I caved into temptation and bought The Grays' _RoShamBo_
through an ebay auction....very glad I did, yes I am. (great
vocals and harmonies; circling melodies with a little melancholia
thrown in; somewhat Beatlesque and I think one song borrows
from The Knack; all 4 guys very good on their instruments)

But I wondered if anybody out there in cyberspace knew of
a site where the lyrics might be posted....Billy? Kevin?

Hey, thanks for posting the link (for others as well as me)
I did find Petri's excellent site this morning...and found the
lyrics I wanted...in addition to history of the band, current
whereabouts, and some interesting reviews.

I'm really enjoying the CD.

So nice to see you folks getting into great bands. I've loved The Grays for
years now. Too bad that's their only CD. It's truly marvelous.

You threw that Beatles and The Knack stuff in to hook me didn't you?  I hadn't been able to locate The Grays yet, but I may be able to get them from the same place I got Jason Falkner.  I did find the Jeff Buckley "Grace" CD yesterday.  It is quite wonderful.  You're going to love it Susan.  His name came up at the same time as Rufus, and I do see a resemblance.  Vocally he can do amazing things.  Lots of emotional laments over lost loves.  Very diverse songs too,  Going from "Corpus Christi Carol" which sounds like the sweetest choirboy you've ever heard on a Sunday morning, with a range going WAY up there, to the really rockin' "Eternal Life".  I've only listened one time through so far, but this one is going to be in the "Rainy Days and Earl Greys" collection of favorites, right next to Rufus.

Jed,

You are the reason I know about HALF of the pop bands out there.
I didn't find out about Jellyfish, the Negro Problem, Odds, Finn Brothers +
incarnations, Fleming & John, et al....ad nauseum.

I own about 20 branches of the Jellyfish Tree now. Never knew about the pop
movement until I started working with you. Heck, I didn't even know I
*LIKED* pop music until 95. I order these pop bands and keep them in the
store just to show my support. Nobody in Tulsa (minus the 3 sales i've had
this month, Thomas Conner, and AT knew about the Negro Problem, yet there it
sits just waiting). I usually have 4 Jellyfish Titles and the Tories too.

Just play a good pop album in the store and somebody is bound to ask you
"who is this, this is good".
I found a source and now have over 20 pre-owned copies of the new jason
falkner cd. I know that most people say it's not as good as the first, but
i have to disagree. the new fountains of wayne is rocking as well. enough
of my tangents.

Boy howdy, is it ever! My new goal in life is to see them in concert. Our
marketing department came to me again for music suggestions for the residence
hall video. I guess you know I gave them Fountains of Wayne to put on there.
Last year was AT. :-)

>Boy howdy, is it ever! My new goal in life is to see them in concert.

I hear through the grapevine that Fountains of Wayne will be on tour with
Ivy this summer.
Ivy is the other band that Adam Schlesinger is in. Female Euro singer to
die for. Excellent pop. Very smooth. They have a single on the soundtrack
for "There's Something About Mary". Ask nevik about Ivy

:>

Mark the Bass King told me about F.O.W. one day. So I bought their first
cd. Then I heard about Ivy. So I bought that. Then Ivy gets put on
another record label so I have to own versions of Apartment Life. Then I
stumble onto a band from Sweden called KOMEDA (same vein). The way I buy
cd's gets more peculiar by the day.

I know what you mean. Jed has had a profound effect on my CD collection too.
So what is the name of your store? I hope to visit Tulsa sometime this summer,
and you've just been added to my list of tourist attractions. Unfortunately, I
don't have anything to sell back. Everything I've bought through
recommendations from Jarrod, April, Babs, Kevin, Billy, Susan, and other people
in this ng have turned out to be things I don't want to part with. I hope
you've got a lot of Elvis Costello. I have tickets to see him June 15, and
I'll probably be in a collecting mood after that.

Wow...I just bought this c.d. too, but I don't remember hearing about it on the

yep. I'm going through an awakening about pop... and find myself
digging around on the sites of the bands recommended on this newsgroup
(thanks, jarrod); and checking out the spin-offs by the various artists.
It's
been interesting to see how the same names keep cropping up on each
other's works....I really like how these folks seem to influence each
other.

I agree with you about Falkner's _Can You Still Feel_ ...and I think it
takes off where _Author Unknown_ left off (satisfied a thirst for
wanting more from him)...Have you heard his cover of "Both

thanks, too, zingali for mentioning a few more names in this thread..

Susan,

Thank you for the compliments. It is an intention of our specific store to
have a website. The corporation has one, but i do not recommend it. we
send out an e-mail newsletter every month that gives a listing of the new
releases each month, concerts coming to tulsa, things on sale, and new
sections or features in the store. we intend to have a midnight sale
sometime this summer. the addy to sign up for the newsletter is

cdw...@hotmail.com

yep, jed and the boys drop names, i go and get them for my collection and
order some of them for the store. of course, that spark usually sets me off
on completely other tangents that compliment what is going on.

for example

i buy jellyfish - every domestic, video, cd single, i can find
this leads me to find every soundtrack or compilation they appear on, even
if i already have it. i'm that addicted.

oh falkner leaves, now i have to get the grays - all of their singles, all
of their comps and videos and falkner's solo stuff as well.

oh, you say falkner worked with brendan benson ?? add him to the list
he helped out on eric matthews newest cd? oh boy do i have that one - total
diamond in the rough
moog cookbook you say? gotta get it
tim smith (bass player on spilt milk) is on tour with sheryl crow? gotta
get her new one
roger manning plays on the newest beck? gotta get it
andy sturmer produces and plays with the merrymakers - got it

this is how i collect cd's
it causes me to stumble on to things i NEVER would have known or found out
about

Jellyfish only came out with 2 cd's?

yeah, right.

I've heard mention of a Jay Barrett who supposedly did some guitar stuff
on _Spilt Milk_ ....and is now with the band Wilco? I don't know exactly
which
riffs were Jay's on "Joining a Fan Club"...who else, if you know, has he
played with?

I can't tell too much from the wavs on Wilco's official site...but read that
they
will play Leno's show this Friday night, May 28th (they had to postpone an
appearance at House of Blues last night for personal reasons, but I
can't imagine that they'd let Leno's show slide...) They are going to tour
with

Are they going to go off in all directions too?

I'm starting to get dizzy here.

I went to look up Steve Nieve who is listed as appearing with Elvis Costello at
the concert I am going to. He has been a keyboardist with Elvis since he was
one of The Attractions, but I thought I'd look to see if he had solo work
anywhere. I found out he contributed keyboards on Squeeze's _Play_ and he
later played with them live. He also did keyboards on Mick Jagger and David
Bowie's "Dancing In The Streets". There are about 25 Elvis Costello CD's
listed at CD Now. I'll print out the list and make the rounds of the used CD
stores. (Not what CD Now had in mind, but it works for me) This makes me
happy, but it's going to take a while, and I have all of these other new things
I want to check out, like Fountains of Wayne.

How do people keep up with all of these guys?

It's crazy-neat how these band members pop up all over the
place...I'm glad you included Squeeze's name in this
thread, Linda..

1) In checking the Brion site, I
found out that he has done covers of work by the band,
as well as many other bands mentioned in this newsgroup,
during his standing-Friday night set at a club in L.A.

2) "Tempted by the Fruit of Another" by Squeeze was
background music in tonight's finale of _Felicity_
(along with what I think was _Bolero_!!)..I was within
earshot...

DING DING DING - We have a winner, Bob. Tell her what she's
won...................................
besides the year's supply of rice-a-roni, we are throwing in the
indestructable 20 piece ginsu knife set AND as an added bonus you get the
triple tier snowball ring straight from the sub-continent in scandinavia.

The TORIES are 1998's answer to Jellyfish. Jify Trip had the fortunate
pleasure of opening up for them in Fayetteville. Incredible music.
Unbelievably humble. Unfortunately, they were cursed. They were on a
little old label called N2K. N2K decided to do CD Now instead of continue
their record label, so know the Tories are in a bidding war. Interscope was
in the running, but I do not know who won. They are so good.

It was really a treat seeing Mr. Zander (Cheap Trick) sing while the Tories
played when they were in Tulsa. Tulsa was the last stop on their VH-1
across america tour. the tories invited about 20 from the crowd to a
private performance at the sheraton kensington bar. incredible 3 hour gig.
and the beverages were all on vh-1.

an email link www.sandplum.com/ipo/schedule.htm to the
"International Pop Overthrow" fest that will be in LA from around 7/23-8/3
.....the Tories will play 7/30 10 p.m. at The Troubadour. (hmm I wonder

I can get Kevin to pick up one of their CDs for me? ::bats lashes::) and
there
were a few other familiar names, my photographic memory somewhat
up to speed : The Sugarplastic (7/26 1030, Luna Park) and The
Solipsistics (7/31, 930, The Gig, Hllywd).

At my store, yes. At most stores, depends. I'll just flag the next one
that comes in.
We should get 1 or 2 this summer.

>if Kevin and Billy will show up so they can give us a review?

they better go to both shows or they'll be getting some e-mail spam!!!

You should be able to pick up a Tories CD (at a new price anyway) at any
major store. If they don't have it, they should be able to order it in. It
is still in print, for now.

No, I'm not Jify Trip. They were 4 people. They were/still are the first
band on our label.

I don't know if he caught the two together on stage or not. He's been to
that show like 5 times now. Talks to Brion after every show, sometimes
between sets. Trying to get familiarity going with him. I'll ask him and
see what he says.

I was out touring with Hanson when this all took place, blast it all. Although,
my girlfriend hung out with the guys from The Tories the night before the show
(all because of a chance meeting she and her sister had with them in a Tulsa
restaurant when one of the Tories introduced himself and his bandmates--out of
the blue---in an attempt, I believe, to gain some female "companionship" while
they were in town. Nothing happened, of course, but my beautiful girlfriend and
her lovely sister showed them around town that night and then went to their
show the next day. They absolutely rocked, she says.)

The Tories are a super fun band to check out. Jellyfish-esque harmonies, happy,
frantic pop, chiming, loud guitars...you know the sound.

I hear ya. My husband preferred it when my old hobby, the one where I
cook and clean, was the predominant lifestyle. Now if he comes home to
a stack of used CD's on the table, he just doesn't seem to have the same
enthusiasm I do. I guess I'm going to have to accept the idea I will
never live a pop life, but I will still be a devoted hobbyist. I just
have to learn to live with a few branches missing in my Jellyfish tree.

OK, let's see if I get this right. Some other drummer hits on your girlfriend
while you're out of town. She, being an intelligent woman who had probably heard
those lines *somewhere* before, immediately sized them up as an itinerant and
lonely bunch in need of a tour guide. She told them where to go, and got to see a
great show. You didn't get to see the show, but you give them a recommendation.
Very tolerant of you I'd say. Didn't the Tories do the theme song for that TV
show "Jessie" that everybody thought sounded like AT?

Whoa. Really? Maybe that's why their name sounds so familiar to me. Jesse is a
horrible show, but I'd always keep the TV on just long enough after Friends to
hear the theme song...loved it. :)

Actually Billy & I had discussed seeing them for IPO. I'm sure we'll be
able to post a review of sorts for you if we do.
I saw them at the Troub as part of Poptopia. It was a cool acoustic
set, but kind of short. They put on like 5 bands in a couple of hours so
the sets are short.
And I might have an extra Tories album here. I can't remember if I do
or not. I'll look for it.

Well, I like Sheryl Crow and all (I really do), but if you want a better Tim
Smith connection, go for his two Umajets albums (one of them being only on
import.. for now). Roger Manning Jr. (of Jellyfish, Imperial Drag, Moog
Cookbook, and Beck keyboardist fame) produced their first album along with Tim
and Rob (the other half of Umajets). Also, if you want to stretch it a bit,
try looking for stuff by the Producers. They were an early 80's power-pop
outfit who had a minor hit with a song called "She Sheila". Tim Smith joined
the band at the tail-end of their "days" and the album that he was on was
considered to be not that good, according to the Producers fans that I know.
(I don't know much about the band, other than the song "She Sheila", since I
can't check out their stuff--they're out-of-print).

Jon's solo album is coming out this summer. I, for one, can not wait! I had a
chance to catch them perform at Largo a few months back, and am still asking
myself why I haven't gone back. There's really no excuse (other than school,
work, low on funds, etc...) for me not going. One song he sang that night
(something called "In the Deep End of the Atlantic" or something like that)
won't be on the album. That's a shame because that was/is one of the greatest
songs I've ever heard. (And that's not an overstatement!)

The Tories are a great band!! I've had the pleasure of seeing them perform
live a couple of times and shot the breese with a few of the members. They're
really nice, down-to-earth fellars and they play an amazingly tight set on
stage. Their harmonies are always dead on. They look as if they should be
getting the success bands like Bush and Blink-182 (ok, so I like Blink 182) are
getting.

I'm sure a lot of your people have heard the Tories without knowing it. They
sing the theme song to the show Jesse. A great song for a mediocre show.

As for the Jellyfish comparisons, I don't really get it, but I know a lot of
people who do. I know for a fact that the Tories were big fans of Jellyfish,
but I only hear the Jellyfish connection in songs like "Winter Wonderland" and
"Gladys Kravitz". But who cares? They're friggin' awesome.

One last interesting factoid to mention to y'all...lead guitarist J.J. Farris
use to be in a band called Slamyn Gladys. They were an 80's glam outfit.

Hey Susan, long time no chat. In fairness, the site is both mine and Kevin's.
Kevin actually mantains it (web design, whatever), I just write material (along

this summer I'll have time to put up rants, raves and reccomendations for all

No, but I'm going to really soon.

>>..and do you know if it's true he'll open for Alanis when she tours

I know it's been confirmed by a friend who lives in Canada. So, I'd imagine
that it's true unless he backs out of it. I know most people probably cringe
at the thought of him opening for Alanis, but I think this is exactly what he
might need to help people to get to notice him. This would be a major coup for
him.

>> And one more question..have you fellows (Zingali?) ever come by his

He was supposed to have released a "covers" album, but it got canned. So,
instead, he seems to be letting them pop out as b-sides to his import singles.
I have his Australian import "Follow Me" single, and he does a cover of the
Kinks' "Wicked Anabella" and Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now". There's also a
Falkner original on it called "In Awe Of Industry". I have a couple of his
7"'s too.

Btw, does anybody here, who has the new Falkner CD, think that "Holiday" is one
of the coolest songs released this year? "Too bad he says the word "shit" in
it a few time, otherwise I'm sure that would be the next single. Radio
stations would have to bleep that part out everytime he sang it, and they don't
want to have to go through that if it's not a proven hit song, like say a band
like Sugar Ray, Sublime or 311 would release. It's like no matter what single
they release, it's going to be played.

>> Oh..

'tis true.
