first off, they appear on an artist cnamed Otis Ball, his CD "I'm Gonna Love
You Til I don't" - the song is titled "Walk On WAter", john and john are
backup singers...it's on the bar non e label.
the birdhouse in your soul WAS released in the u.s. as a 7", with a b-side
of "hot ska". i've seen it in tower.
it was also released in the u.k. as a 12 inch with a couple other songs as
b-sies, i forget which ones.
purple toupee was NEVER out as an 8 track. bar none scrapped the idea after
a while.
ah, for the days they used to play hoboken - since that's where i am now..

Can't agree with that one, as I own a copy. For a wopping $4.50 I got the
tape and Bar None promo sheet. The only problem is, I don't have
an 8-track player. But it looks really nice on my shelf...

Well, I fell head-over-heals in love with TMBG a couple of years ago.
Recently I have fallen for _THE_BOBS_. If you like TMBG, you should
really check out this group! My best description is: They Might Be
Giants meets Bobby McFerrin. If you are really rabid about TMBG, you
owe it to yourself to get your hands on something by The Bobs.
Also, this thread should really be cross-posted to rec.music.dementia.
TMBG--whether or not it's really played on Dr. Demento; I haven't been
in an area that gets the show for eight years--epitomizes the kind of
music Dr. D plays, so folks over there are likely to know about TMBG.

My Creeping Suspicions cause my mind to recall reading somewhere (probably
here or maybe on a borrowed printout of nm-list) that the 8-track promo is
really just a random tape with a TMBG label on top of it. But hey, if you
want to send that tape to me (drool :-), I'll put it through the old 8-track
player and find out.
I've had no luck finding the TMBG import compilation in the Chicago area so
far, but one store (Reckless) says they plan to have it. I want.

Yes see them! Especially if you can see them perform a solo concert. I
saw them sing for two and a half hours at a free outdoor concert at Penn's
Landing in Philadelphia last summer and it was the best concert I had ever
seen.

While this is a good album, their second album My I'm Large is IMHO
better. It has songs such as "Helmet" "Johnny's Room" "Please Let Me Be Your
Third World Country" "Banana Love" and "My Shoes" all of which are great songs.

And there's now a fifth Bob, Joe Bob Frenetti. He joined them last
summer to do "instrumentals" for an all covers album they released in Italy.
(I'm impatiently waiting for it to be released here.) I've seen him in concert
and he does some great stuff. "Art for Art's Sake" off the first album has been
improved greatly by his presence.

They just recently added an "A Capella Rhythm section" named
Joe Bob (don't know his last name.)
And it's true, they are absolutely wonderful. They do a version
of Psycho Killer that rivals The Talking Heads (of course, it does
get silly towards the end...but hey, that's the Bobs!)
They currently have 3 albums:
- The Bobs
- My, I'm Large
- Songs For Tomorrow Morning.
"My I'm Large" is my personal favorite, but they all are quite
fantasic. I believe that they are constantly touring...many times
with a dance troupe named "ISO". Call (415) THE-POOP for latest
concert dates.

CORRECT: we just bought an 8-track player at a friend's yard sale
for five cents, and were finally able to play that damn TMBG promo 8-track:
our copy turned out to actually be "Stevie Wonder's Greatest Hits".
So now my husband and I have an 8-track collection consisting of two
tapes: "Stevie Wonder's Greatest Hits" and Robert Wyatt's "Ruth Is Stranger
Than Richard" (probabaly very rare, but I doubt that there is anyone foolish
enough to collect 8-tracks).

The Fools from Boston do a great cover of Psycho Killer called
Psycho Chicken. It came as a 7" inside one of their albums.
Its really great! Too bad the rest of their music is boooringgg.

While it's unlikely that 8-tracks will generally be collectables (ditto
cassettes), there are a few that contain material that is difficult/impossible
to find in any other configuration, and are, in fact, collectable.
Two spring to mind:
One is a Mike Nesmith 8-track from the
early '70's that contains a longer verion of one song than
that which appeared on vinyl.
The second is a quadraphonic Apple 8-track of John Lennon's "Imagine" album.
This quadraphonic version of this album was never issued on vinyl in the US, and
though I've heard of vinyl quad versions appearing odd corners
of the world, I've also heard that these are counterfeits, mastered
from the 8-track. I don't know for sure if this is the case, though.
I have a copy of this second 8-track. No quad 8-track player. So I guess that,
as well as my quad 8-tracks of "Tapestry" and "Sly & the Family Stone's
Greatest Hits" will continue to gather dust...

A friend had an 8-track of "Trout Mask Replica," and I had a car
stereo with an 8-track player. Alas, he's a Serious Collector, so I
didn't get to drive around Boston at the crack of dawn trying to find
a parking space while blasting "Ella Guru."
Instead, I bought the 8-track soundtrack to the movie "Times Square."
Got to hear Lou Reed instead.

Does anyone know when this song was released? It looks like we have
evidence that she was working in pop music before her "debut" album.

When I came over from sweden last summer, I had never seen 8-tracks before.
I like weird stuff so I bought some. I guess I spent less than the price of
one CD and I now have ~80 tapes that I pester my office mate with.
I got three 8-track stereos for $17, sold one for $10, so now I have two for
$7. It's probably the cheapest way availible to get a useful music collection.

It's not a cover, it's a parody. However, I disagree that the rest of
their music is boring. Some of it is very funny, e.g. "Life sucks, and
then you die."
