Hi All:

I am newbie to CORBA, I want to implement a distributed video server
using CORBA.

This is a Linux platform based project, server is in C++ and client is
in Java. My Question is which free ORB is suitable for me? Will MICO
(MICO Is Corba) be a good choice?

Thanks in advance!

AFAIK, MICO doesn't support multithreading...

So if you need a multithreaded server, you should consider omniORB (or maybe
TAO?).

bye, Christof

You could also try ORBacus, which offers quite a range of threading models.
It's free for non-commerical use.

Cheers,

Michi.

Hi Alex, You probably want to at least take a look at TAO. It supports
audio and video streaming services. It is open source, has a zero cost
license and we provide support. Check out
http://www.cs.wustl.edu/~schmidt and our web site
http://www.theaceorb.com
where you can find commercial products such as CDs and documentation
kits. OCI is supporting a stable version called V 1.0.

Good luck on the project and regards Malcolm Spence--

I would also verify the existence of a decent source of documentation.
There are free orbs which, after hacking around for some time,
you will discover that you will have to pay
quite a bit for the documentation.
So, the "free evaluation" of the orb is made difficult.

Another issue is the good programming practice:
avoid excessive use of macros!
