Long ago, probably around 1970, when I was in third grade, I had occasion
to read a collection of very scary stories.

I believe two of them were "The Mannikin" (about an unformed twin that
grew on a man, used him as a host, and ultimately possessed him and bit
his jugular vein, killing them both in a hellish attempt to prevent the
host from revealing his secrets) and "The Day of the Dragon" (about a
scientist who reforms crocodiles' hearts and makes them into dragons.

Scary, for a 3rd grade schoolkid.

There was one story, however...I recall it was about ancient Egypt, and
there were men surrounded in a jungle by dog-headed men (which the
Egyptians later revered in statue form) that hunted men for sport.

Does anyone recall that story name, or the author?

Thanks greatly.

I read this same collection. It's called 'Monster Mix', and I read it when I
was in maybe fifth grade. 'The Mannikin' is by Robert Bloch, and 'The
Day of the Dragon' is by Guy Endore. I don't recall the author of the
thritd story, or the story itself, but if you can find 'Monster Mix'
you can probably find it.
