Some people have been complaining about off-topic material
and political arguments in this newsgroup.

The best way to handle these things is to get a newsreader
that allows filtering.

I use Agent (paid-for copy). I can mark threads, authors,
or keywords so that I don't even see them any more.

Very often I don't even bother to set filters. I just filter
things by reading the subject headings. It's not hard to
pick out the things I'm interested in and the things I'm
not.

Your mileage may vary.

Your right Martin, its not worth getting into those whinny posts. I also
try to filter (don't open) those largely ignorant political diatribes. Think
along the lines of recreation/models/radiocontrol/air and all is bliss.

Learning to tolerate thread drift, flames, and trolls is part of life
on the wild frontier. Here's some good stuff I picked up during
a recent flamewar in <news:news.groups>:

| Tim Skirvin, moderator of <news:news.admin.net-abuse.policy>
| said, 'The winner of a Usenet flame war is the first to walk away.'

| Godwin's Law prov. [Usenet] "As a Usenet discussion grows longer,
| the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches
| one." There is a tradition in many groups that, once this occurs,
| that thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically
| lost whatever argument was in progress. Godwin's Law thus practically
| guarantees the existence of an upper bound on thread length in those
| groups. However there is also a widely-recognized codicil that any
| intentional triggering of Godwin's Law in order to invoke its
| thread-ending effects will be unsuccessful.

Statement:
For the first time since I started hanging around this newsgroup, I added
some well defined phrases to my kill file and deleted all corresponding
messages from my news database. The length of these off topic troll nonsense
ravings is amazing..
I am convinced it is not a measure of the mean American mind. However, if it
is, may God indeed bless (help?) America.
I presume, most of my modelling friends stand taller than all that rubbish I
washed down the drain lately.
End of statement.

Problem is, the people to whom Godwin's Law *should* apply aren't familiar with
it--and would ignore it if they were.

What gives you the right to make a statement that infers that you are
speaking for all Americans? From what I have been reading you may be
speaking for bigoted far right no-nazi types and nothing more. Maybe it
is time you laid off the booze for a while for it sure appears to have

This is in the Godwin.FAQ, which is maintained by the legendary Tim
Skirvin:

Rule #547 (Arne Adolfsen): When people know they're wrong they resort
to ad hominems.

<http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/legends/godwin/>

Here's Godwin himself explaining the origin of his law:
<http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/2.10/godwin.if.html>

(And yes, for those who are keeping score at home, I know
this whole thread is off-topic. I put OT in the original subject
line, but it got cut somewhere along the way. Thread drift
happens!)

Marty,

Although this axiom proves true time and time again, it suggest a rule
of engagement with criteria for "winning" and "losing".

I wonder how a winner or looser can be declared unless all parties
have agreed to the rules. If any participant says that he/she does
not recognize the rule, it can not be applied.

I wish we could get a 100% agreement to this rule, but the chances of
that happening run similar to the BoSox meeting the Cubbies in the
World Series

I'm not sure Red. Let time be the judge of that.
IMHO, God likes to watch us while we, specimens of the human race, stir up a
lot of dust. The utter chaos thus created provides Him with the events that
He needs for his own plan.

Godwin's Law doesn't say that the author of the comparison
loses; that's a tradition that has become attached to the Law.

There's a different tradition of interpreting Godwin's Law which
says that after the Godwin Threshold has been crossed, the
thread becomes meaningless. This avoids the question of
deciding who wins and who loses, and it does not make the
false assertion that meaningless threads will soon die.

>I wonder how a winner or looser can be declared unless all parties

Agreed. This is where Tim Skirvin's Dictum seems right to me:

'The winner of a Usenet flame war is the first to walk away.'

This means I get to declare victory and go home any time I want
to. ;o) I don't need anybody's permission to walk away from
a flamewar.

>I wish we could get a 100% agreement to this rule, but the chances of
>that happening run similar to the BoSox meeting the Cubbies in the

I'm sure you meant to type "the chances of ... the BoSox [BEATING]
the Cubbies in the World Series." As a citizen of Buffalo, the city
of Beautiful Losers, the citizens of Boston have my deepest
sympathy. :o(

(For those keeping score at home, I still know this whole
thread is off-topic. Discussing netiquette is off-topic in
99.999% of newsgroups.)

That's a good question. I've learned how to cut cores, so I've

I never said anything about supporting Sadam. All I have ever inferred
is that our government is not only deceiving us on some issues but also
stripping us of our constitutional rights daily. No one is above the
constitution including our president and his staff yet he has not only
inferred but also shown in the recent past that he feels he indeed is.
Maybe you don't have a problem with that but I do.

While you may believe everything you read and hear from our government
officials and local media others including myself take the time to seek
information from all sources. Only then do we make a decision on whether
the information we are presented with is truthful just propaganda. They
have a politically correct term for individuals such as you Bob it is
"Neo-conservative". Maybe you should do a bit of research on it.

An ignorant population is a controllable population.

John,
I am not sure if that is a good way to define a patriot when you disagree
with all those who have done something about their beliefs.

By the way, what have YOU done for your country?

Many of my friends and I accepted the challenge YOUR elected officials set
out in the 1960's and tried to stop the forces of evil in RVN. Where were
you?

Sherman,
I took my two year vacation in RVN. When are you going to take a vacation
in pleasant, sunny IRAQ that you defend and swear by?

Mr. Dickson, you have pretty much shown the newsgroup your views.
Your language in a public forum which is visited by women and children
is deplorable.

Why pick on him? Others who disagree with him have used equally vile
language (which he has quoted). Do you not notice vile language that
comes from the conservatives?

So you're saying it's not deplorable?

JT,

Two questions.

Why did you repost the language if you think it's is not proper here?

Do you realize that Sherman copied what was said to me by Adkins?

May I request that you live up to the standards you demand of others
and that you chastise ALL who do not live up to those standards, not
just those who do not agree with your politics.

Hypocrisy and double standards are NOT the American way.

I did not make any demands. I made a statement. You should also live
up to "ALL" your own standards and you should read the original post
more carefully.

You have a double standard - one for yourself (OK to quote vile
language) and Adkins (no chastisement for vile language) and another for
Dickson (not OK to quote vile language).

And you have a right to be a hypocrite.
