The Allegory of the Cave

In one of his most famous writings, The Republic, Plato warns the
people of his time, and all future generations, that a true seeker of
the truth must deal with the fact that new discoveries will always
conflict uncomfortably with common sense. In what has come to be
called the "Allegory of the Cave" he asks us to imagine a race of
people imprisoned deep in a dark cave, all chained
together facing a wall of the cave. Behind them is a large fire and
another race of people moving about, such that shadows are cast on the
cave's walls.
The chained people do not realize that they are captives of the other
race. The only reality they have ever experienced is the shadows on
the wall. By observing the shadows carefully, they have been able to
recognize generalities in the movements of the shadows and have been
able to develop a practical science: They can predict what shadows
will appear at different times and
when food and water will become available, for example. Because their
science works; because there is a regularity to their experience,
there is little reason for them to believe that this science is false,
that what they are seeing is an illusion, an appearance only,
reflected from a more fundamental reality.
Suppose now that by accident one person escapes from the grip of his
chains enough to turn around and see for the first time what is
actually causing the shadows. His first reaction is uncertainty,
confusion, and fear. He quickly turns back to what is familiar. All
his life he has known only the shadows as real. He must be going
crazy. It must be a bad dream. He concludes that he must never turn
around again. Eventually though his natural curiosity becomes too much
to suppress and he turns around once more. This time, because he is
more familiar with the sight, he does not quickly turn back to the
shadows. He realizes that he has made a great discovery. With great
excitement he turns back to his companions, announces his discovery,
and attempts to get them to turn around. At first they laugh at him.
Then they reason with him, pointing out that the shadows are what
everyone knows to be real and practical. As he persists, they ignore
him, concluding that he has lost his mind. At first the force of this
community rejection causes him to doubt what he has experienced. Maybe
he is crazy But it seemed so real.
Eventually though he turns for the final time, and with the resolve of
an explorer, he frees himself completely from his chains and leaves
his people to investigate this new reality. He discovers that he is in
a cave, finds the passage out of the cave, and slowly and tentatively
makes his way out, eventually reaching the outside world. At first it
is too much to bear--so many new things, and the light of the Sun
blinds him. When he finally adjusts, he is overjoyed by this simple,
clear, beautiful new reality compared to the dim, confining reality of
the cave's shadows. He must share this discovery. So back into the
cave he goes to try once more to convince his former companions, most
likely to no avail.

"If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to
man as it is, infinite. For man has closed himself up till he sees all
things through the narrow chinks of his cavern."
William Blake

"A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'universe,' limited
in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings
as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of
his consciousness. This delusion is a prison, restricting us to our
personal desires and to affection for a few persons close to us. Our
task must be to free ourselves from our
prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all humanity
and the whole of nature in its beauty." Albert Einstein

Kudos to Edmo for coming up with the oldest screed I've seen on AA. Lack of
any original thought noted.

Edmond and the Metapsych Tree

Once upon a time there lived a mean, angry crow named Edmond.
One day, while flying in a new part of the forest, Edmond found
a tree he liked. Edmond named the tree the Metapsych tree.
Edmond decided that any birds perching in his Metapsych tree
would only be allowed to sing songs that Edmond liked.

Soon the other birds found Edmond's Metapsych tree, perched on
its branches, and began to sing songs. Edmond did not like the
other birds' songs. He tried to push the other birds out of the
Metapsych tree. But Edmond was not a very strong bird and even
the young, female sparrows easily resisted Edmond's pushing and
shoving.

Edmond began to sing his own songs as loudly as he could. He
sang his songs over and over. But the songs of the other birds
were much more interesting and pretty, so Edmond's songs were
ignored and mocked.

One day Edmond told the other birds that he was leaving the
forest forever. He hid under a pile of leaves at the edge of
the forest, close enough to the Metapsych tree to hear the other
birds' songs. But Edmond eventually flew back to the Metapsych
tree to try to silence the other birds.

Edmond became very angry. He began to hit his head on a rock.
"I will hit my head on this rock until you stop singing those
songs," Edmond warned the other birds. Some of the other birds
told Edmond that hitting his head on the rock would not stop the
birds from singing. But Edmond did not listen.

"I <bonk> WILL NEVER <ow> STOP!!!" crowed Edmond.

That was many years ago. Today, the birds still sing any song
they want to sing in the Metapsych tree. Edmond may still be
hitting his head against the rock, but none of the other birds
care.

The Allegory of the Panty

In one of his most famous escapades, The Panty, Wollmann warns the

people of his time, and all future generations, that a true seeker of

the truth must deal with the fact that kook behaviour will always

conflict uncomfortably with common sense. In what has come to be

called the "Allegory of the Panty" he asks us to imagine a race of
people living deep in a dark cave, all living together facing a wall of the
cave. Behind them is a large fire such that shadows are cast on the cave's

Suppose now that by drugs and a tragic auto accident as a teenager one

person escapes from the grip of his

uncertainty, confusion, and fear. He quickly turns back to what is familiar.

All his life he has known only resentment towards women. He must be going

and he holds the panties once more. This time, because he is
overcome with Oedipal desires he places the panties on his head. He believes
that he has made a great discovery and will be lauded by his companions in
the cave. With great excitement he turns back to his companions, announces
his discovery, and attempts to get the positive reinforcment he has never

courtship display. At first they laugh at him. Then they reason with him,
pointing out that the shadows are what everyone knows to be more intelligent

has lost his mind. At first the force of this community rejection causes him

to doubt the value of what he has done. Maybe he is crazy But it seemed so
cool.

Eventually though he dons the panties for the final time and, with the
resolve of an idiot, he frees himself completely from his chains of sanity
and leaves his people to build a castle in the desert wastelands of New
Mexico. He discovers that without neighbors to point out his erratic
behavior he can indulge his adolescent fantasies and feverish mysogyny far
from prying eyes. At first it is too much to bear--so many new thongs, and
the heat of the Sun baking his already clam-like brain. When he finally
adjusts, he is overjoyed by this simple, dusty, kooky new reality compared
to sanity. He must share this discovery. Others must agree that he is a
Christ figure to be adored and obeyed. So back into the cave he goes to try
once more to convert his former companions and this time they will
pay....oh, yes...THE BITCHES WILL PAY!

We just think of him as our "special" little boy. We do wish he'd get a
girlfriend, though. We've had to cut off access to our computer when he
visits home because between the paranormal and porn sites and that horrid
Kettler individual, the keyboard is getting just too hard to keep clean.

Wait just a minute there, "Mrs Flagship of the Paranormal". Seems to
me you should be "Mrs Flagship1 of the Paranormal". I suspect a hoax.

I'll have to do more research concerning this. Then I'll post my con-

An other fine explanation maybe why we often (especially in modern physics)
seem to be unable to combine the formulas we derive from our observations of
the universe into one single image. Experimenting with the shadows on the
wall, we fail to realise that what lies beneath (or behind) may be something
completly different....

:A Prediction. Eddieeeeeee will do one of the following:
:
:He will ignore your request.

:He will answer with a non-sequitur rant which will contain

:
:He will send a powerless complaint to the Usenet admins, along

I agree with your predictions. But any bets on which
copy/pasted quotations he'll use in place of original

C'mon, Edmo. We're anxiously awaiting more kookfarts like this. Why
must you run away like a frightened little dog when your obvious lack

Sorry it took so long to answer the infants, but _*I*_ actually have a
life. To answer you spinic--
None. I got my version from a professor at SDSU, so either HE
plagiarized it, or it is so well copied in the email exchanges that he
forgot where he got it not unlike I almost did. I went and looked at
it, it is the same version. I never did know where mine came from,
because it was sent to me without a reference, or else was forwarded
and someone else cut out the original author. I never claimed this was
my writing. But I still have the email from the professor at SDSU who
sent it to me for a course in education in Greek philosophy.
Guess you'll have to chastise them:-))) and Kali abd Bob officer will
have to call the authorities on Noel Tyl too, because he has been
professing to be a counselor and psychological astrologer for 35 years
now.
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
You spinics, never ending OCD with spinning others, and all it gets
you is wasted time and your own defective and negative thinking
exposed.

blind are we?" And he said to them, "If you were blind, you would have
no sin. But now that you say, 'We see,'your sin remains." John 39-41

Either way Eddy is still a plagiarist even with his "I never
claimed this was my writing" bullshit. Wollmann always has a
stupid excuse for his lack of integrity; he's an asshole.

So you plagiarized a professor who sent it to you in email?

See http://www.sa.sdsu.edu/htc/Plagiarism.pdf for "unintentional"
