REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
comp.os.linux reorganization

Summary: An extensive reorganization of the comp.os.linux hierarchy is
proposed. It includes the creation of five unmoderated
groups, the renaming of three unmoderated groups, and the
creation of one moderated group.

Proponent: Dave Sill, d...@ornl.gov

History: This proposed reorganization was prompted originally by the
excessive level of traffic in comp.os.linux.help. Following
a straw poll conducted by the proponent, an RFD was posted
for breaking comp.os.linux.help into various subgroups and
creating comp.os.linux.answers for separating the
documentation and announcements currently posted to
comp.os.linux.announce. During the discussion period, it
became evident that it would be preferable to create the
groups directly under comp.os.linux, rather than splitting
comp.os.linux.help. The previous RFD reflected that change.

This revision of the RFD incorporates several other changes
resulting from the previous 11 days of discussion.

1) Create group: comp.os.linux.advocacy (unmoderated)

Charter: For discussion of the benefits of Linux compared to other
operating systems.

2) Create group: comp.os.linux.answers (moderated)

Charter: For posting Linux FAQs, How-To's, READMEs and other
documents that answer questions about Linux. This will
help keep the traffic down in other c.o.l.* groups and will
leave comp.os.linux.announce for true announcements.
C.o.l.answers will be moderated by Matt Welsh
(m...@cs.cornell.edu), the moderator of c.o.l.announce.

3) Create group: comp.os.linux.development.apps (unmoderated)

Charter: For questions and discussion regarding the writing of
applications for Linux and the porting of applications to
Linux.

4) Create group: comp.os.linux.hardware (unmoderated)

Charter: For questions and discussion specific to a particular piece
of hardware, e.g., "can this system run Linux?", "how do I
use this disk drive with Linux?", etc.

5) Create group: comp.os.linux.networking (unmoderated)

Charter: For questions and discussion relating to networking or
communications including Ethernet boards, serial
communications, SLIP, etc.

6) Create group: comp.os.linux.x (unmoderated)

Charter: For questions and discussion relating to X Window System,
version 11, compatible software including servers, clients,
libraries, and fonts, running under Linux. XFree86 issues
not unique to Linux will be directed to
comp.windows.x.i386unix.

7) Rename group: comp.os.linux.development (unmoderated)
to: comp.os.linux.development.system (unmoderated)

Charter: For questions and discussion regarding the development of
the Linux operating system proper: kernel, device drivers,
loadable modules.

8) Rename group: comp.os.linux.admin (unmoderated)
to: comp.os.linux.setup (unmoderated)

Charter: For questions and discussion relating to Linux installation
and system administration.

Rationale: "setup" is clearer than "admin", and is a more obvious
place for installation questions.

9) Rename group: comp.os.linux.help (unmoderated)
to: comp.os.linux.misc (unmoderated)

Rationale: Comp.os.linux.help is too general. It currently overlaps
comp.os.linux.admin, and if the proposed groups are
created, will overlap comp.os.linux.hardware and
comp.os.linux.networking as well as comp.os.linux.setup.

Note: The intent here is actually to remove comp.os.linux.help,
not to rename it to .misc, which already exists.
Unfortunately, it's not possible to remove it directly.

Comp.os.linux Reorganization Roadmap

Current Hierarchy Proposed Hierarchy

c.o.l.advocacy
c.o.l.announce c.o.l.announce
c.o.l.answers
c.o.l.development c.o.l.development.system
c.o.l.development.apps

c.o.l.hardware
c.o.l.misc c.o.l.misc
c.o.l.networking
c.o.l.admin c.o.l.setup
c.o.l.x

After a discussion period of 21-30 days, if there are not overwhelming
objections to any of the proposed groups, there will be a Call For
Votes (CFV) posted to the groups as this RFD. The voting period will
be at least 21 days. Each proposal that passes, by receiving 100 more
YES votes than NO votes and twice as many YES votes as NO votes,
will be implemented.

This could be taken over by the proposed automoderated
'alt.os.linux.support', in which people have stick to a certain
format to ask their questions.

I've been giving some thought to this, and I think the best way would
be to require a set of approved primary and secondary keywords in the
Subject line, for example:

Subject: net/nfs: "What does RPC: Unable to receive" mean?

People knowledgable about a certain subject could then autoselect on
these keywords.

The automoderator could then generate archive-names based on this.

What I'm still undecided about is wether there should be required
fields in the text for questions.

Answers should also have some requirements, so that nobody just posts

We don't really need a special group to discuss X windows on
Linux. The groups in the comp.windows.x are where X windows related
discussion should go. I don't think that there is anything very
special about running X on Linux, especially not enough to warrant a
newsgroup for it.

This is essentially my modified proposal with .programmer renamed
to .development.apps and .development renamed to .development.system.
As such I'm fairly happy with it.

I still think that we should have .programmer instead of .development.apps.
This is because not all programming is considered applications development.
For example if I have a question about GCC use under Linux .programmer
sounds like the right group, .development.apps does not.

What about .programmer and .kernel?

.x may be misleading to some; what about .x-windows or .xfree86?

I also think the 'which CD-ROM is best??' question should be sent here
since this is DEFINATELY oen of those highly opinionated topics....

Similarly the 'my such-and-such CD-ROm sucks' posts, while in general
not terribly useful, shoudl also be sent here. In general, can we make this
flame-hell?

What about sysops, sys-admins, or administrator? Just a thought. This
woudl make it more obviously different from .hardware...

In general, it looks great and much overdo. Thank you for taking the
time to work this all out.

Dumb question. comp.windows.x.i386unix is clearly the existing group for
this discussion. The only problem is that folks can't find it. Is there any
way we can simply point this group to comp.windows.x.i386unix? That way the
users can find it and the experts of XFree86 only have one group to read?

Maybe I'm not as tired as I thought. Vote NO! Reasons posted in a couple of
dozen posts in news.groups along with Matt Welsh and Ian Jackson.

Well, since you're once again requesting dicussion, I'll once again
express my opinion that all but one of these groups are really bad
ideas, and briefly explain why.

Dave Sill <d...@sws5.ctd.ornl.gov> writes:

>1) Create group: comp.os.linux.advocacy (unmoderated)

Compared to other topics which have spawned .advocacy groups, I don't
think there's actually all that much "Linux vs X" discussion in the
comp.os.linux hierarchy. Furthermore, what is there tends to be
concentrated in long, single-subject threads, and is therefore
extremely simple to deal with using a killfile. I don't think this
group is needed.

>2) Create group: comp.os.linux.answers (moderated)

Although I don't think this one is strictly necessary, I wouldn't mind
seeing it created simply because I don't look at much of the
help/howto info posted to comp.os.linux.announce (or if I do I go to
sunsite.unc.edu:/pub/Linux/docs to get it), so it'd be nice to have an
announcements-only (i.e. _new_ info) group that was free of stuff I
already know. So although I might even vote for it, I can live
without it.

>3) Create group: comp.os.linux.development.apps (unmoderated)

>4) Create group: comp.os.linux.hardware (unmoderated)

>5) Create group: comp.os.linux.networking (unmoderated)

>6) Create group: comp.os.linux.x (unmoderated)

There's not much Linux-specific about most Linux applications/
hardware/networking/x, and anything about them that actually is
Linux-specific should go (appropriately) in comp.os.linux.devel --
therefore these groups don't make sense.

>7) Rename group: comp.os.linux.development (unmoderated)
> to: comp.os.linux.development.system (unmoderated)

System? As opposed to what? Any development that is actually
specific to Linux involves the kernel, and therefore, even by your own
definition, belongs in comp.os.linux.devel. There's no other category
of Linux development out there. If it doesn't involve the kernel, or
system calls (i.e. the kernel), or device drivers (i.e. the kernel),
etc, it's not Linux-specific, and belongs in another newsgroup.

>8) Rename group: comp.os.linux.admin (unmoderated)
> to: comp.os.linux.setup (unmoderated)

Eh, who cares. IMHO, admin is as good as setup and there's no real
reason to change it now. Who knows, you might even have had an
argument before it was created in the first place, but it's simply not
worth spending any time on it now.

>9) Rename group: comp.os.linux.help (unmoderated)
> to: comp.os.linux.misc (unmoderated)

Oy. Same argument as the last one.

>After a discussion period of 21-30 days, if there are not overwhelming

I don't particularly care whether or not this goes to a vote b/c I'm
pretty confident it will be shot down, but I'm curious what
constitutes "overwhelming objections". There sure hasn't been much
support.

I agree that this group is superfluous. We should just officially
take over comp.os.unix.advocacy. ;^) Seriously, I think this is a
good idea; it would give us a place to vent our "there is no OS but
Linux, and Linux is my OS" feelings without offending the nonbelievers
unduly.

>>2) Create group: comp.os.linux.answers (moderated)

This may be the most contoversial group, but it is the the one
which will require the least adjustment (except from Mr Welsh).

>>3) Create group: comp.os.linux.development.apps (unmoderated)

I think this would be better named c.o.l.programmer; which IMHO, is
clearer and which would allow (with c.o.l.kernel) us to keep the single
level heirarchy for the time being. Further, its clearer: especially to
newcomers.

>>4) Create group: comp.os.linux.hardware (unmoderated)
>>5) Create group: comp.os.linux.networking (unmoderated)
>>6) Create group: comp.os.linux.x (unmoderated)

A seperate Linux X group is a mistake. I've been following much of
comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.* lately. There really is a unity of purpose
between us and the BSD/OS2/NT folks. We all have similar desires and
constraints. Still, I support the generic Linux hardware group: setting
up a Unix system on PC hardware can be trying- Linux installation isn't
yet trouble free, and drivers are a significant constraint. Not to
mention, helping newcomers find an answer.

But a Linux X group: come on. These are xfree questions. They belong in
the group for xfree questions. I admit that I find the xfree group to be
about the dullest in netland, but there are people (saints(?)) who do
answer the sophisticated and byzantine questions placed therein. We would
be doing a disservice both to the questioners and to the answerers by
creating a seperate Linux group.

>>7) Rename group: comp.os.linux.development

>> to: comp.os.linux.development.system (unmoderated)

I feel this should be col.kernel... which I feel suits the subject well.
If we do have have a vote including col.development.* groups, I think
.scientific and .games should at least be brought to a vote. There has
been significant support for .scientific.

>>8) Rename group: comp.os.linux.admin (unmoderated)
>> to: comp.os.linux.setup (unmoderated)

This is a win.

What about col.newbies: a "no question too stupid" group? Hopefully,
intermediate Linux users could answer most of the questions reinforcing

their own knowlege while they do so. Some posters have suggested that
Linux newbies don't put enough effort into reading the documentation. I
think this point of view is naive- the Linux groups generally have more
sophisticated questions than the comp.os.unix.* groups (or most of the
similar hierarchies). Further, Linux does have an amazing amount of
documentation... asking newbies to read and comperhend it all without an
occasional dumb question is asking them to be superhuman. Some of you
want to make this a passive database: I think it would work better when
people are encourage to interact via answering questions they think they
know (or care to look up). This idea is not inconsistant with a database
for authoritative answers.

Unfortunately---and this is the entire impetus behind this discussion---
the Linux newsgroups are overrun by postings, most of which are in
.help, which doesn't distinguish between hardware questions, X questions,
networking questions, and so forth. And if you think that there's not
much Linux-specific about these topics, think again.

Again, unfortunately this is not the case. There is a great deal
of discussion about applications porting and development under Linux.
Even though these discussions may technically belong elsewhere,
that solution looks good only on paper and doesn't work in practice.

You have the right attitude, the same attitude which spawned the
current hierarchy. Unfortunately that approach didn't work, as
evidenced by the now almost-completely-useless Linux newsgroup
hierarchy.

The point is to have a newsgroup for specifically installation- and
system-configuration-related qurestions. .admin doesn't seem intuitive
for this.

In both c-news and INN, I can create a group and alias it to another
existing group, but I don't know if you can send out a newgroup
message to cause this to happen.

IMHO, this reorganization of the comp.os.linux.* newsgroups would
promote more usability and readability than the current structure. as a
linux user for over a year and a half (since comp.os.linux[.announce]),
i have observed rapid growth of traffic in all newsgroups, and i believe
the reorganization which Dave describes will benefit both the
current/veteran and new user communities.

their functions. Of couse, you do have people that will cross-post just to
try and reach everyone. I answered a question in .devl this morning that
clearly did not belong there. Only after I pressed send did I realize I had
accidentally followed up to all the groups and not just to the original sender.

The problem is not as much of a how do we split it up, as it is a how do we
get people to post sensiably. What's the point of creating an awsome new
heirarchy if someone is gonna crospost "How do I load a GIF under X" to every
single group.

The other problem is to convince those that have been around a while that the
above question does have a place in the linux hierachy. Sure...it probably
belongs under comp.windows.x.apps, but to a new user it is very hard to tell
where Linux stops and something else picks up. We are not gonna gain a
following by being a bunch of pricks who only say "READ THE FAQ. THAT BELONGS
OVER THERE..." While it may be true, we are not born omnipitent.

Remember...Linux is just the kernel, so anything else belongs somewhere else :)

your name in the bounce ack, you may assume your vote did not reach the vote-
counting machine and should try again. For votes after the bounce ack was
created, please check with the vote-taker. If you have any further problems,

I think it is a major f**kup to create a duplicate group for X. The
only X available for Linux is currently XFree 86 which have their own
newsgroup called comp.windows.x.i386unix.

What new info could col.x bring in, that did not belong in cwx.i386unix?

Well -- I understand the effect of these changes, but I still don't
understand the social side. There appeared to be real opposition to 4 of
the above proposals -- .advocacy, .x, .setup, and .help.
Why anyone would be opposed to an advocacy group, I'm not sure -- it's
the perfect place to redirect the followups for most of the dorks who
wander by to pick fights. Assuming you haven't kill-filed them already.
The X stuff simply doesn't fit under Linux, the setup proposal is the
most brain-dead of them all, and the .help group proposal seemed to me to
be silly and mostly a no-op.

So I guess what I'm asking is: why were people opposed to a reasonable
newsgroup, and more people not opposed to the proposals with lesser
utility?

Then perhaps you should have voted.

I know this sounds stupid, but why didn't you say anything before the vote?
:-)

I don't know if he did, but several others did. The counter
answer was that as most posters to the linux groups were too lazy or
stupid to find the correct group, it was easier to create a group for
them than suffer the multitudes of off topic XFree postings in all the
other linux groups.

Not true. There are at least two commercial X servers for Linux:
Accelerated X from Xinside, and Metro-X from Metro Link.

What new info could col.x bring in, that did not belong in cwx.i386unix?

C.w.x.i386 is really only for XFree86. C.o.l.x is for anything to
with X under Linux including free and commercial servers, clients,
window managers, etc. People posting generic XFree86 questions will
be referred to c.w.x.i386. If it serves no other purpose than to
be a magnet for XFree86 questions, it'll be worthwhile.
