One thing has struck me about the current spate of attacks against
remailers. Each and every attack was the result of something said by a
remop in public about the conduct of users of their service, which some
deranged individual (I assume the perpetrators) have taken exception to.
The lesson should be simple.

We appreciate news about remailer serviceability and common mistakes people
make which can result in chains not working, but I agree with Doc (was it?)
who suggested that remops adopt a low profile and try to remain impartial.
Nycrem is antagonistic and his attitude is a little grating - and frankly
there was no need for frog to say anything about the spammer at all. His
best option would have been to report the stupid sod to his ISP having
discovered the moron's IP (daft twat) - anonymously of course. (Aside: He
can't even get the bloody attack against frog right, since he's obviously
flooding more than just his intended target. The guy's totally deranged -
and a perfect example of why it's often advisable to remain anonymous on
the internet).

Complaining and criticising can only attract idiots. Always has and always
will - and unfortunately you remops provide an ideal conduit for their own
abuse. Thanks for your service guys - all of you.

Abuse and outing are touchy subjects and must be handled carefully.
I had made my mind about the subject before I started Frog,
and my "policies" pages were on my WWW 15 days after I started

It is very clear for me,
where I draw the right line
what I do under hich scenarios
and I believe my WWW is explicit enough
I don't react under emotions, I am entirely scripted for those maters

I understand that you agree with me on those points:
it was a clear-cut case of abuse
the attacker deserved to be OUTed
and, besides flooders-wannabe, I don't think many disagree

We disagree about the OUTing being *public*:
I feel more comfortable doing it publicly
I don't mind the flak from the usual bozos and sock puppets
I have to look at my face in the mirror every morning
because RoadRunner did not cancel the cable account,
the guy is still online
>victims of spam can hasten the cancellation
>other remops must be informed of the IP to take counter-measures
not to be used as injection points
I believe in deterrence
legitimate users prefer to know that they are not threatend in any way
I do what I say / I say what I do

My bandwidth is probably not as broad as theirs, especially as I would pay twice for each message. The mailbox ab...@rr.com is probably a black hole.
What was *extremely* efficient was blocking the relay's IP at firewall level.
They were *thousands* of blocked access attempts, and I paid close to nothing while corresponding mail piled at the relay's: they cancelled the relay account within 48 hours

I will press on every possible button to make them react
ab...@rr.com became my "From:"
every complaint I receive gets tipped about ab...@rr.com, with telephone and fax
the WWW is in the works

FA would have had to provide the headers, with both sender and recipient, and be certain that the info would have leaked:
"remop secretly tips ISP to have remailer user's real account terminated"
From that point, FA's reputation would have been ruined forever, whatever evidence he had on hand, whatever obvious the abuse. Taking such a PR risk would certainly have been the worst possible solution.
When you decide to fight abuse, you have to bite the bullet and be crystal-clear about your actions, and the Frog must certainly be commended for that.
