I bought the 2 to 3 IDE from Elite Micro Computers (USA) which will let me
ad externally a 3.5" ide drive. Only cost $50, and is well worth it. Mainly
as 3.5" ide drives are going for less then a dollar a meg here.
I did read a 'readers letter' in a magazine over here complaining that a
3.5" drive he had bought from a supplier pre-configured inside an A1200
kept overheating and also caused a 'rippling' disturbance of the video
output. Dunno what make the 3.5" was.

I bought an 80Meg 3.5"HD from Software Demon, and it ran fine until I added a 4MB
Ram board from Power Computing. Since then I have had to endure my A1200 crashing
2 or 3 times in the first 5 minutes every time I switch it on.
Software Demon blame the power supply and say I should get C= to replace it, however
C= (and Wang) said that basically the 3.5" drive is too large and requires too much
power to drive it. This plus the extra power drain of the ram chips causes the A1200
to crash.
At the moment I am trying to negotiate a solution with Software Demon - hopefully
(though not likely) I'd like to get a refund so I can buy a 2.5" drive. So if you
have no intention of expanding your a1200 other than with a HD, then I guess a 3.5"
is ok, otherwise steer clear.

That 'rippling' disturbance is probably because of the missing
capasitor in early A1200s. You will get this with all HDs, more or
less, if it hasn't been fixed.
And yes, 3,5-inchers will overheat if they are put into the wrong
places in the A1200. Always keep the air holes open on the top of
the A1200 and never cover them with anything. I know, I sell such
3,5 inch sets. :-)

I went home last night and took a good look at my A1200 with 2.5"HD (
bought from (now defunct ?) Diamond Computers. I indeed noticed a slight
ripple on the screen when the 2.5" drive wasn't being accessed. Is the
power to the drive 'pulsed' to keep it at speed ? (It's about 3Hz).
When the drive is being accessed, the screen is completely stable.
Where is this capacitor you mentioned ?
Adam Buckley
I don't know excatly, it seems like you have the opposite
problem compared to most other A1200 owners. Does the screen ripple
when you are accessing the floppy disk drive?

I wish I knew! I only know it's a surface mount type...
Anyone like to share that location of the capasitor with us?
