COYOTE SHIVERS
Coyote Shivers
Mutiny/Cargo
by
B.F. "MOLE" MOWAT
I goddamn near tossed this debut CD from this rock-star-by-association
Shivers (married ingenue Bebe Buell, thereby becoming Liv Tyler's
stepdad) into the round file after hearing the first three minutes of
it.
I mean, you can only take so much moronic dimestore bravado before
spasms of hate set in, and "The Truth" (the aforementioned opening
track) does precisely that. In retrospect, I'm glad I didn't, because
the rest of the CD is an actually okely-dokely kind of rawk record.
You've heard this kind of thing before: Johnny B. Goode via Johnny
Thunders and Johnny Ramone. You either like it or you don't, as they
say.
So it's up to the band and Shivers' personality to pull this off, and
for the most part, it works. The band anchors Shivers' staggering
guit-sway with a solid rhythm section, based around drummer Jack
Pedler, who pushes these three-chord songs around like some
methamphetamined bulldozer. (And speaking of philosophy, Jack is the
true master of this band. One day, someone will release his works of
genius and the world will weep in gratitude.)
When Shivers isn't making an ass of himself, he can be amusing.
Granted, a lot of the humor here is by context. Something like
"Bisexual Girl" would be just another tasteless MacLean & MacLean skit
if was done by less celebrated individuals. Not that I'm complaining,
though...
The best parts on the disc occur when Shivers' feelthy mind colludes
with this pure heart -- and a pop sensibility -- to bring forth
material like "Sugarhigh" (the saving grace of the putrid Empire
Records soundtrack), "Classic Car" and "Living With Me." On the latter
composition, Shivers proclaims to the world that "Living with me/
Really blows." Wow. All aspiring rock stars should be so honest.
