I've been watching the game on and off this afternoon. At the top
of the sixth inning, they played "It's a wonderful world" as done
by Louis Armstrong, showing the fans around the ballpark. It was
sort of nice and reminded me of games that I attend. Normally
the broadcast doesn't try to simulate attendance at the game by
emulating what happens when you go to the restroom or to get
food by missing part of the coverage. Are these guys real???

As a side item, am I too biased for the Braves to see that
the announcers are neutral, or are they blatantly rooting
for the Cards?

the Buck boy was, but he'd be annoying and clueless even if he was
unbiased...can you say "build a career on Daddy's coat tails"?

I was, however, pleasantly surprised by McCarver when he pretty strenuously
defended Rafael's D at SS when Buck was trying to badmouth that part of his
game...and, later he said something else that I never, ever thought I'd hear
come out of *any* Fox announcer's mouth much less McCarver's: "Andruw Jones
can go get them [in CF] just as well as Mays ever did. I never thought I'd
say that, but it's true." I'm expecting that to show up in Terry's sig file
any time now. :-)

There's no question that Joe Buck got the Cardinals' radio job because he
is Jack Buck's son. What he's done since then, particularly in landing
the #1 job at Fox, has been on his own.

which is to say, not much...unless you like his "style", which I don't...or
if you're into rooting for the Cardinals, which isn't my thing either...or
if you think it's pertinent to bring up something a player did 3 years ago
and hasn't done since, and I don't....Buck sucks...he should be ashamed to
associate his family name with what he passes off as broadcasting, IMHO.

Well, they have both spent sizable amounts of time in St. Louis (McCarver
as a player in the 60's and 70's), so they're going to be more
comfortable at a previous home

The other new guys are much worse, and between Jack's staying at home these
days, Joe's duties with F*x, and Mike Shannon's benders, we hear them a lot

I like both Joe and Jack Buck, but I've found that this is one issue that
is a matter of taste. Those who grew up near Cincinnati swear that
Brennaman and Nuxholl are the best, but I find them boring. People from
New York love Phil Rizzuto, but I can't stand him. I grew up listening to
Jack Buck and think he's the best, but the suits at CBS saw fit to replace
him in the early 90s with the awful Sean McDonough. For the most part,
it's who you're used to.

All that said, though, who gives a rat's ass who the announcers are
rooting for or what they're talking about? It's not like it affects the
outcome of the game.

I agree with you. But Joe is worse than Chip.

precisely. i could be calling the games (wouldn't you all just love
that?!?) and it wouldn't change the fact that bjsurhoff was hitting
3rd.

And every bit of it terrible. Is it any wonder he's the #1 at a mouth-

Mike Shannon was the rightfielder and later third baseman for the great
Cardinals teams of the 1960s. He's been teamed with Jack Buck doing the
radio broadcasts of Cardinals games since 1972, and is well known for
being in the bag just about every night.
