Did anyone go to the summer CES in chicago which was held just recently?
I just saw my 3rd video of the show and saw something on it that i didn't
see before. It was Nascar by Sega, and on the screen i saw print of 32
bit, 25 mhz, textured polygon mapping, and other such. Did anyone there
see this? The graphics looked great, what i wanted to know was is this
the Giga Drive, or is this a new arcade board they are using. It looked
better than 3DO when comparing smoothness of graphics. They also had
another demo of some sort of space shooter for it, the graphics looked
unbelievable. Can someone give me info on this?

Ok i just saw a newer video of the CES basically it had more stuff than
the previous videos i saw. I saw this full motion video in Jurassic park,
and it looked really good, is it 3DO? It looked too good to be sega cd
full motion video. The video was full screen not a smaller box like they
normally do. Slipheed i don't think will live up to the hype. The cinema
scenes will live up to the hype because they look excellent, but as far
as the game play goes, it looks to me like a standard shooter, and as my
friend said before, and now i have to agree with him, it reminds me of
Axelay on the SNES. Eternal Champions looked pretty good, huge characters
on the screen, but i'm still not sure how good it will be, but its off to
a great start. Joe Montana football looked pretty good too for the Sega
CD, but when???? I saw time killers and it was supposed to be for the
SNES, it looked pretty good graphically, but i didn't see any gore in it.
Rebel Assault didn't look too great, it was smooth but the graphics kind
of looked a bit blocky. Someone else who said they tried it, said it was
slow compared to the pc version, and he doesn't mean access time between,
he meant during the actual game play. Clay Fighters looked really good,
looked liked it was all digitized. Sega VR had a big introduction to it,
and i realized you are limited to your view according to it. Yes you can
turn your head 360 degrees, but i never considered the fact that you cant
look up or down or diagonal. Hmm thats all i can think of off the top of
my head that was impressive.

The Nascar stuff was a demo Sega was showing on three large TV's (what
they called monitors). I guess it was to show off their great risc
technology and polygon generation rates. I thought it looked really
neat, most of it was real nice EXCEPT the tires which looked really
polygon-ish.

The space demo was just another part of the 15-20 minute long repeating
demo. I had to watch it while waiting to play yet another free game of
virtua racing with 7 other players!

No, that was Sega CD. They are using a new compression technology (called
CinePak) to display full screen, full motion video. I'm not sure if it know
does >16 colors, but it sure looked like it. It was an improvement, but IMO
still not really TV quality even.

I didn't play the game but I thought it looked horrible and I did notice
that it seemed to have a very slow frame rate.

the Gigadrive was NOT on display but supposedly at some pre-CES thing they
demoed it. The guy I talked to said the graphics were so smooth looking you
couldn't actually identify a single pixel.

also i think it is going to be called "SATURN" not Gigadrive, although I
like the name Gigadrive a lot better.

"CinePak" is also used is Apple's QuickTime (Macintosh Extension), if
anyone wants LOTS of examples. (Most movies are compressed with it.) If you
have QT 1.6 or earlier, it's called "Compact Video," but in 1.61 it's called
"CinePak" although it's exactly the same.
My personal opinion of CinePak is very high. With small movies, 24fps
is easy, and with larger movies, a little quality is sacrificed for higher
framerates. (Specifically, you can often see the frame differencing in a movie
bigger than 320x200... but, Genesis resolution is about that)

Considering that it was an alpha version (about 15% done) I wouldn't be
surprised if the final version looks much better. I hope so -- the still pics
look AWESOME.
