The space demo was just another part of the 15-20 minute long repeating
demo. I had to watch it while waiting to play yet another free game of
virtua racing with 7 other players!
No, that was Sega CD. They are using a new compression technology (called
CinePak) to display full screen, full motion video. I'm not sure if it know
does >16 colors, but it sure looked like it. It was an improvement, but IMO
still not really TV quality even.

I didn't play the game but I thought it looked horrible and I did notice
that it seemed to have a very slow frame rate.

the Gigadrive was NOT on display but supposedly at some pre-CES thing they
demoed it. The guy I talked to said the graphics were so smooth looking you
couldn't actually identify a single pixel.
also i think it is going to be called "SATURN" not Gigadrive, although I
like the name Gigadrive a lot better.
"CinePak" is also used is Apple's QuickTime (Macintosh Extension), if
anyone wants LOTS of examples. (Most movies are compressed with it.) If you
have QT 1.6 or earlier, it's called "Compact Video," but in 1.61 it's called
"CinePak" although it's exactly the same.
My personal opinion of CinePak is very high. With small movies, 24fps
is easy, and with larger movies, a little quality is sacrificed for higher
framerates. (Specifically, you can often see the frame differencing in a movie
bigger than 320x200... but, Genesis resolution is about that)

Considering that it was an alpha version (about 15% done) I wouldn't be
surprised if the final version looks much better. I hope so -- the still pics
look AWESOME.
