Well,
We're there. Toronto here we come. Now, about McCarver.
I know an interesting anecdote about him. When he was
catching Bob Gibson for the Cardinals, he went and visited Bob
on the mound. Tim tried to tell Bob something and Bob inquired,
"What the hell do you know about pitching?" McCarver shrugged,
then Gibson answered himself: "Nothing. Now get the hell off of
the mound. Now!".
We wonder, "Why did Tim turn on the Phillies?" Is he still
sore that Bill Giles fired him? I don't think Tim realizes that
the ONLY, and we mean ONLY reason the Phillies kept him around
was that Steve Carlton wished it, and Lefty got what Lefty
wanted (ie. the "Mood Chamber" in the players' locker room).
Once Lefty lost some of his pull with the club, McCarver was
gone quicker than you could blink an eye. Perhaps this speaks of
a difference between McCarver's actual worth as a player, and
his self-image as a player. Two different items. You see, unlike
Dykstra, Lefty, Schmidt, Bowa, and Boone; Timmy's not gonna be
going to Cooperstown unless he's covering it for CBS.
