I know that this is probably a FAQ, but please be patient with me. I've seen
neither hide nor head of such a beast on this group as of yet.

Allow me to explain. I have watched anime at AggieCon here in good ol' College
Station (Whoop!), but hadn't watched any for many months, when it happened. My
fiancee of seven months, who I was going to marry in January, dumped me. I
plummetted headfirst into despair, pausing only briefly before falling even
lower, into depression. I watched every video I had about the house, until only
one thing remained: my roommates copies of Robotech. I was hestitant to put
them in, as I had until that time a low opinion of Robotech, although for no
particular reason.

And now I'm hooked. My roommates tapes cover episodes 1-36 of the series, the
so-called 'Macross' saga portion. I listened with interest as my roommate
explained how Carl Macek took three separate Japanese animated series and spun
them together to create Robotech. I then watched 'Macross: Do You Remember
Love?' and hooked doesn't even begin to describe my feelings toward this film.
Hey, maybe I'm just emotionally vulnerable, but I think the Rick/Lisa (Hiraku/
Hyasse) story is enthralling.

My question is this. How similar is the original Macross series storyline to
episodes 1-36 of Robotech? I see in Macross II that the STF-1 wasn't destroyed
in Macross. I presume that Rick and Lisa still finally realize they are in love
with each other. I presume that Min-mei ends up all alone (yea!). Would some
one who knows please respond (via e-mail if you like), and compare and contrast
the Macross series with episodes 1-36 of Robotech. Thank you in advance.

Your best bet is to e-mail Steve Pearl at pe...@romulus.rutgers.edu to
post or send the Robotech FAQ. Sure beats a dozen erroneous replies. :-/

The most important thing to note is that there are at least three different
chronologies when you deal with Macross and its various incarnations:
1) The original TV series
2) The movie and the Macross II OAV series
3) The Robotech series

Not to mention Mikimoto's "what-if" ending, the Hong Kong
comics, the (practically-unrelated) Battletech....

Look in rec.arts.anime.info
...OR...
FTP to remus.rutgers.edu.
...OR...
e-mail to pe...@remus.rutgers.edu.

Not that it helps much since YOUR particular questions aren't there.
(Actually, it WOULD help, given that Steven Pearl is a Macross otaku.)

Not TOO different, from what I'm told.

Macross II follows the movie continuity, not the TV show. Thus, the
SDF-1 (not STF-1) wasn't destroyed, Ichiro and Misa (not Rick and Lisa)
probably got married (in a ceremony attended by a macronized Max
Sterling ^_^), and Minmei (not Min-mei or Minmay) ends up as a
holographic projection.

Compare and contrast? Gee.. I havent done that since college...

Macross II follows the movie continuity whereas Macross 2036 follows
the series continuity (with movie character designs)

For information on Rick/Lisa and the rest of the Robotech gang, you
should check out the Sentinels video (see their wedding!) or the
Sentinels comic book series from Eternity and the Sentinels novels
from Ballantine Books.

As for the Macross series vs the Robotech series, the best means of
comparison would be to purchase the Perfect Collection videos. These
videos, being released by Streamline Pictures (I know... Shogun... I
know.. But I can hope, can't I?) have 2 episodes of Robotech along
with *subtitled* epsiodes of the corresponding Japanese series
(Macross, Southern Cross, Mospeada).

In a nutshell, Robotech compares well with Macross. Not alot was
edited, although the plot was changed in places to incorporate Carl's
vision.

Briefly, if you want a Macross experience with Robotech you must do
the following:

Ignore all references to Zor, the Invid, The Robotech Masters

Protoculture is not a "Rocket Fuel" but rather the culture of the
Earth

Minmei is much better in the Japanese. Honest. Please try to
remember that.

There are a few scenes of violence and nudity cut. Splice in your
imagination as required.

The original BGM and songs are *much* better too.
