Strong storms roll across parts of Texas

Sunday, May 25, 2003

At least one person died and some 70,000 customers lost power as a
band of storms spawned rain, large hail and gusty winds across North
Texas early Sunday.

Crews were working throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area to fix
toppled power lines and utility poles, TXU Electric spokeswoman
Normalinda Gonzalez said.

She said power had been restored to all but 30,000 customers by Sunday
evening, adding that service should be back up for everyone by Monday
morning.

In Dallas, police blamed speeding and wet roads on a crash that killed
a man when his vehicle struck a tow truck parked on the shoulder of a
highway.

Hail the size of baseballs fell in Denton early Sunday and more than 4
inches of rain was reported in northeastern parts of Dallas, National
Weather Service forecaster Dan Dixon said.

He said the storm threat should subside for the greater Dallas-Fort
Worth area, but a chance for severe weather will linger for areas
south of the Dallas-Fort Worth area until Tuesday night.

Across Texas Sunday, storms also hit parts of the Panhandle while
sunny skies were reported in South Texas. Temperatures ranged from the
middle 60s in the rain-cooled Panhandle to 99 degrees in Falfurrias in
deep South Texas.

Memorial Day will be cloudy with more thunderstorms possible in West
Texas. Highs will be in the 70s. In South Texas, clouds, showers and
thunderstorms also were on tap, with highs in the 80s. Isolated
thunderstorms were forecast for North Texas. Highs will be in the
upper 70s.
