Some time ago I acquired a SECOND 16mm film of the unaired pilot to the
Monkees. It is slightly different than the one Rhino released in the VHS set
and is better quality. It came from the estate of an NBC executive. I
contacted the amazingly interesting and friendly Andrew Sandoval about this and
after some discussions he passed the information on to the DVD department at
Rhino. A few weeks later I received an E-mail from their Director of DVD
productions stating that Rhino was interested in using the film on the DVD set
and to contact her regarding this and the fees involved. I contacted her
immediately and we worked out all the details as far as the transportation
logistics and time frame for the mastering of the film. At the conclusion of
the conversation I inquired about the "fees" mentioned in her E-mail and was
told that there was very little money left in the budget at this point. I told
her this was fine and that I had no unreasonable expectations concerning this
(Andrew had previously told me some horror stories of people wanting
astronomical sums of money for Monkees footage and I wanted to assure her this
was not the case with me). She told me she would have to get in touch with the
people handling the money and would get back to me when she knew something.
Six weeks went by before I finally started trying to contact her and after
several days I finally got through. I was told that there was NO money left in
the budget and Rhino had decided to pass on using this film. When I asked her
why I wasn't contacted earlier she said she thought she had E-mailed me about
this but I never received any further word. I told her that the money was not
even important to me and I was willing to wave the fees if that was what it
took to get it included. I was then told it was too late to get it on the DVD
set for the first season but they might put it on volume two.
Monkees fans, THIS is why projects like this take so long to get done and end
up bringing very little new or important material to the table. At this point
I really don't have any desire to be associated with this project and I think
it is a shame this second unaired pilot will not be readily available to
Monkees fans everywhere as part of Rhinos set. Mr. Sandoval was extremely nice
but I could tell he gets the runaround too from Rhino and this is truly a labor
of love for him. So there you have it, if you plunk down your hard earned cash
for the Monkees DVD box set from Rhino and wonder why the unaired pilot looks
the exact same as the one on the VHS box set, now you know.
Sorry you got the runaround. Now, it seems most folks here are pretty vocal
against bootlegging/pirating of available audio/video, but since they aren't
interested in it...how about burning me a DVD?

Now, wait a minute here, is it really bootlegging if the guy
owns it? If Rhino would have paid *him* to put it on *their*
product, wouldn't that mean they would have been guilty
of something like pirating?
>Greetings to all fellow Monkees fans. I have been a long time reader and

A shame. Thanks for the story though. Can you tell us how your
version differs?
Much thanks.

Yes, if he owns only the physical media, and not the reproduction
rights.
