Anyone have an opinion on the quality of the Hyperdata or Sager systems? I am
in need of a laptop and don't have the inclination to sink 2750-4000$ into a
laptop.
How about some lower cost good quality machines?

My Sager P-75, which I bought in 8/95, still works on after almost
3 years of hard use. Now it's primarily used as a backup word
processor. Though Sager has always fixed any problems, I'd rate
their technical support as poor for two reasons:

1. They don't seem to have adequate spare parts on hand.
When the hinges broke, it took 6 weeks to fix and return it.
They did pay for the return shipping to me; but, thought it
was under warranty, I had to pay the shipping to send it in
for repair.

2. They lack a good command of the English language and
this can get very frustrating when trying to explain the
symptoms of a problem. Especially, since as a novice at the
the time, I didn't know how to describe the situation
adequately. Sager did return my calls - usually within 24 Hrs.

Also, Sager is known for using desktop CPUs in their portables
to cut costs. BEWARE of companies that put desktop CPUs in their
portables. When a desktop CPU gets too hot, it can actually clock
down in processor speed to as much as 50%. This applies especially
to Pentium 166-233MHz. If the vendor is reluctant to verify that
the CPU is a "True Mobile" or "Tillamook", than it may be that they
are using desktop CPUs. This creates problems with excessive heat
and decreases battery life.

I suppose I should add my Sager story-from-hell
in the interest of those even contemplating buying
one of their notebooks. I purchased a sager NT5200
in 1996. With 32mb and added bits, the cost came to
over $4000. I opted for the GE extended warranty,
thinking the reputable name meant something. Within
the first year, the motherboard had to be replaced, NO ONE
could get the pcmcia modem to work, and the internal battery
power lasted about 12-15 minutes. Sager's technical staff
was difficult to reach and almost impossible to understand.

In December of 1997, the hinge cracked and the hard drive
was overheating badly and making a loud whining noise. I
contacted GE service, and after three calls, average waiting
period 65 minutes on hold, was told a fed ex box would arrive
at my house within 3 days in which I should send them the
notebook for repair. 3 WEEKS later the box arrived. I sent the
computer. 3 MONTHS later, after many, many calls and hundreds
of minutes on hold, I was told that they had lost it. Fed Ex could
not find my house (single family house in San Francisco?),
that it was sent back to GE, and that no one knew where it was.
They said they would send a replacement. In April (the initial call
had been made in December!) they sent me an SDA (System
Design Advantage) notebookas restitution. I believe SDA makes
parts and re-builds computers. I got no apology and no explanation.
In the meantime, I had to lay out another $1800 for a PC in order
to get my work done. I am in "discussion" with GE, but I speak
to a different representative each time I call. I sent e-mail to GE,
and got no response. BUT, they did mail me a nice plastic pen
with a note that said "thank you for visiting our web site" . I figure
this pen has now cost me about $5800. It will probably run out of ink.
Sager? I don't THINK so.

I'd put Hyperdata Direct in the same category as Sager. At least
Sager repaired mine eventually.

Happy shopping... John

Have had Hyperdata 800 pro since Sept or Oct '97 without one problem. The
Company is the direct sub of the manufacturer (Sunrex), it and its
predecessors have been around for over 20 years. They semm reliable and, as
opposed to Sager, do not seem to have a problem with the English language

The sales personnel at HyperData Direct are the rudest that
I've experienced. They're in the same league as the Direct
Wholesellers in NY/NYC and New Jersey (MicroWharehouse excluded).
