Harare - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe was sworn in on Sunday,
after a
presidential election rejected by many in the West as flawed, and
immediately vowed to accelerate the seizure of white-owned farms.
Fighter aircraft flew by and a 21-gun salute boomed out as Mugabe, 78
and in
power since independence from Britain in 1980, was sworn in by Chief
Justice
Godfrey Chidyausiku.
Hailing his victory against Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)
challenger
Morgan Tsvangirai as a blow to Britain, the colonial power in the
former
Rhodesia, Mugabe said: "We have dealt a stunning blow to imperialism."
Tsvangirai has branded the election result "daylight robbery", and
charged
that bands of pro-Mugabe supporters imposed a reign of terror on
opposition
strongholds.
Mugabe rejected criticism of the election and the campaign leading up
to it,
telling hundreds of ruling party supporters in the grounds of his
State
House office: "The greatest win, you will agree, was our democratic
process."
He said opposition to the seizure of farms from the tiny white
minority for
redistribution to blacks dispossessed under colonial rule had become
an
obsession among his critics.
"The land reform programme must proceed with greater speed and
strength so
the losses and drawbacks of the current drought-ridden season can be
overcome," he said.
South Africa and Nigeria, partners with Australia in a Commonwealth
troika
that will decide on Tuesday whether to recognise the election, are
trying to
persuade Mugabe to form a government of national unity with
Tsvangirai's
MDC.
Presidents Thabo Mbeki of South Africa and Olusegun Obasanjo of
Nigeria will
meet Mugabe in Harare on Monday as part of their efforts to avert
Zimbabwe's
suspension from the Commonwealth.
Mugabe made no direct reference to the coalition initiative, but he
did
invite the MDC to cooperate with his ruling ZANU-PF to overcome the
challenges facing his country.
"We call upon you all, including the MDC, to work with us as we
deliberate
in parliament, and outside parliament.
"If you are a Zimbabwean national, you can never be something else. We
are
bound together by our independence and nationality. Our destiny is
one," he
said.
Zimbabwe is in the fourth year of a deepening recession and faces
large-scale famine this year after a drought and the disruption of the
farming sector by government land seizures.
Police and soldiers mounted roadblocks in Harare and outlying
townships as
the ceremony got under way, attended by the presidents of Namibia,
Mozambique, Malawi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania.
State radio had said on Saturday that 20 heads of state would attend,
but
many governments, including South Africa and Nigeria, sent envoys.
The United States, European Union countries, New Zealand, Canada and
the MDC
- among the many critics who denounced the election as unacceptably
flawed -
all said they had refused invitations for Sunday's ceremony.
South Africa has yet to pronounce formally on the validity of the
election.
The head of the country's 50-member observer mission said on Wednesday
the
poll was "legitimate", if not free and fair. But individual observers
took
issue with mission leader Sam Motsuenyane's assessment in newspaper
interviews and columns.
"The elections were not free and fair and I would not want to describe
them
as legitimate," said Independent Electoral Commission chief Brigalia
Bam,
who ran the 1999 election that brought Mbeki to power.
After the head of the EU's election observer mission was expelled in
February, the European Union imposed a visa ban and a freeze on the
overseas
assets of Mugabe and 19 close aides.
A communique issued after the EU summit in Barcelona on Saturday said:
"The
European Union will maintain its humanitarian assistance to the people
of
Zimbabwe and will consider possible additional targeted measures
against its
government."
The EU leaders also agreed to try to steer African opinion on Mugabe
and
said they would soon send a high-level mission to confer with the 14
countries of the Southern African Development Community about European
concerns over Zimbabwe.

Africa: an unjust relationship which allows them to exploit Africa's

natural resources and peoples, while paying lip service to fostering
democracy and free trade. The same white powers which historically
ravaged Africa through the slave trade and colonialism are now
implementing neo-colonialism throughout most of the continent. The
oppressors' greatest fear is that Africans will unite into a single
United
States Of Africa and become a Black superpower capable of elevating
all of
her citizens politically, economically and culturally. They also
dread
the support of all progressive African governments for the Reparations
Movement which seeks to restore all Blacks in the Diaspora.

It seems any action taken by President Mugabe is offensive to the
Western European powers from which Zimbabwe was redeemed. For centuries
Africans lived under Britain's oppression. White farmers were given
land that rightfully belonged to the people of Zimbabwe, while the
indigenous African people were relegated to the bowels of society;
downtrodden.
Since the Africans took back their country, it seems that no policy or
process instituted by the people's government meet the approval of
Europeans, namely Britain and the United States.
While the New York Times and other Western media-makers reported the
failure of the recent Zimbabwe elections, several reports from
neighboring African countries reported the triumphs and commitment to a
fair election process.
If that election was stolen, so too was that of U.S. President George
W. Bush. In Florida there are numerous first-hand accounts of citizens
being turned away while heading to the polls. The Highway Patrol
systematically turned people back from the polling stations. Some
stations also denied many the right to vote by closing while voters were
still in line, others by finding "problems" with registration records of
particular individuals, who were by many accounts, minority.
The "international observers," or Western reporters who found the
Zimbabwe elections "deeply flawed" should be reminded of the last U.S.
presidential election, with all its inconsistencies, yet not deemed
"flawed."
Neighboring countries like South Africa and Nigeria have accepted
President Robert Mugabe's victory because it was fair. Obviously these
"international observers" saw something very different from what
Zimbabwe's neighbors saw.
Strengthening sanctions will only result in further oppressing the
people who have been socio-economically raped by Western colonists, who
still control much of Zimbabwe's economy.

My letter to the NY Times after reading this editorial.
Mary!
In your editorial "The Stolen Election in Zimbabwe", I noticed how it
was mentioned that "Bush administration has refused to recognize the
declared results." Isn't that tantamount to the pot calling the
kettle
black? This editorial also cites, "Washington and other Western
governments may now strengthen the current mild sanctions against
Zimbabwe." Perhaps other nations should sanction us as well. After
all, we had five Supreme Court justices stop the vote counting and
declare for not only us but the free world who our president should
be. We are the last nation who should be telling another nation on
how to elect a leader. We only have the case of Bush V Gore to prove
that fact.

Pity the poor Zimbabwean farmer, deprived of his swimming pool,
servants
and gin and tonic

The Guardian
A white farmer in Zimbabwe admitted last week that he had finally
changed his mind. "I was so naive," he told a Mail on Sunday
correspondent, "to think that 50,000 whites could really make a
difference, and hold out against the tidal wave of chaos that is
engulfing the rest of the continent." What depressed him most, he
said,
was the apparent indifference of black Zimbabweans to the fate of the
whites.
A brisk scan of the week's British press might have raised his
spirits.
Zimbabwe may have let him down, but Blighty has come good, in word at
least, if not in deed. Anything but indifferent, it has been
incontinent
with outrage - and the scenes gripping the nation have been truly
shocking. Reporters who cover Africa will be more familiar with the
spectacle of atrocity, of course, but less accustomed to the swell of
foreign horror. Not known for our sympathy for African misfortune, all
of a sudden we are appalled.
Bad things should obviously not happen to white people. How else to
explain the indignation? The knowledge of unspeakable horrors
inflicted
on black Africans is seldom allowed to interfere with our peace of
mind,
as if they were in the natural order of things. Over there it is hot,
zebras live in the wild, and bad things happen to blacks. But when
white
families are dispossessed, it is another matter altogether.
The plight of the 21 arrested farmers, and the many more forced from
their homes, however terrible, is far from the worst thing taking
place
in Zimbabwe. A human rights agency in Harare recorded 288 incidences
of
torture last month. In the same 30 days, unlawful detentions numbered
104, disappearances 61 and political murders 11. The number of white
farmers killed since April last year is nine.
But if we have a distorted impression of the picture, it is as nothing
to many white Zimbabweans' idea of an acceptable distribution of
injustice. Last week the Mail on Sunday ran a report by one in Harare
who lamented the scandal of whites being "reduced to a kind of genteel
poverty", having to "trade in their beautiful old houses". Worse yet,
he
had sighted a white prostitute "in a minute skirt, despite the cold
winter wind". These are people who want nothing more, he pleaded, than
"to live out what remains of their lives in what is left of British
colonial style."
As if this were not just a reasonable request but a right. And
somewhere
in our fury at its denial is the implication that many of us still
think
"British colonial style" is a debt our former colonies owe to their
whites. The report, thundered the Mail on Sunday, "should shame our
government". There are many things in Africa that should shame our
government, but the existence of a white prostitute - like some
abomination against nature - would be low on the list.
White Zimbabweans caught up in Robert Mugabe's madness deserve the
sympathy and support of basic humanity. But in their new role as
victims
of his racism, it is rather too easy to forget their less sympathetic
history. A white liberal who left the country in 1986 wrote this month
that "a crucial factor [in the current troubles] is the inherent
racism
still present among many white Zimbabweans". After 20 years of
democracy, he observed, they call themselves "realists" rather than
racists - a phrase you often hear among white South African farmers
near
the border with Zimbabwe. Resistance in the region to the idea that
blacks should ever have been given the vote is still alive and well,
and
South Africa's courts still hear cases of farmers beating their
workers
to death.
"Please don't write all the usual old cliches about swimming pools,
servants and gin and tonics," Zimbabwean whites told the journalist
Ian
Jack in 1977. That is what he found, though, and that is what many of
the whites moved there for. Few families arrived 100 years ago, as it
is
claimed; most were postwar arrivals looking for sunshine and a higher
standard of living than they could possibly hope for at home. They say
they have been "good" for Zimbabwe, and indeed they have. If you own
rich land and pay your workers a pittance, how could you not be
productive?
The idea that they did this for the good of Africa is less easy to
swallow. "Now," Ian Jack wrote in 1977, "they seem to be rationalising
their instincts for self-preservation into a kind of moral crusade."
The claim now is as it was then - that they are as African as their
black compatriots; not "white settlers" but rightful claimants of
their
African heritage. "We are not going to capitulate," another farmer
swore
to the Guardian last week. "They can wreck our property, but we won't
be
driven out." This is difficult to square with the fact that so many
have
kept their British passports, and are now calling on the country they
left - fed up with its despicable socialism, tax-grabbing Labour
government and dreadful rain - to rescue them. Britain certainly owes
Zimbabwe something - but what it owes individual white farmers is less
clear, and perhaps less important.

Please be minded that this article was an expression of the author's
individual opinion after some research and was in no means written
with any
seditious purpose or to encourage any seditious action(s). AIM has
assumed
responsibility.
As a law student, I have scrutinized the British Overseas Territories
Act
2002, and have come to a number of conclusions that I will now share
with
you without prejudice.
First of all, the act is of little significance to the layman's
understanding or
to anyone who does not have the British Nationality Act 1981. For this
same
reason, I will not at this time make a detailed critique of the Act,
but
there
are obvious inconsistencies in what the Act purports to do and what we
were
led to believe it would do.
Secondly, the Act does not distinguish between a British Overseas
Territory
Citizen and the British citizen, except in name. Usually an Act would
detail
the rights or distinctions between both, not only as a means of
declaring
the law, but so that their would be no ambiguity when it is subject to
scrutiny by the court, and the citizens would be certain of what the
perimeters of the law
actually are. Since the judicature cannot themselves make law, but can
only
interpret it; it follows that if such a distinction is not clearly
drawn by
Parliament in England or the legislature in the other territories,
that the
Court cannot and will not declare any distinction and may in actuality
rule
that there is none since none is apparent in the Act. The only clear
instruction is that if we wish to be registered as a British citizen
we can
apply for such. This however is no distinction between the two. It
simply
means that while all of us may be British citizens it is up to the
individual to choose whether he or she wants to be registered. This
may not
dispute the fact that registration or not, we are all caught by the
web.
It is very important to note that in legislation, what is not
stipulated may
be just as detrimental or more so than what is. And most times what is
most
detrimental are the implied terms of the Act as opposed to the
expressed.
For example, we were made to believe that this citizenship would not
be
reciprocal, and indeed there is no express provision in the Act to say
that
we are indebted to Britain in anyway. However there is something that
will
prove to be just as if not more detrimental.
Section 8(4) provides that "This Act extends to (a) the United
Kingdom, (b)
the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, and (c) the British Overseas
Territories".
What does this mean?
It means that in the same way that the option of registration is
available
to
us, so too is it available to these countries. In the same way that we
can
enter
Anguilla freely without opposition or condition because of our
Anguillian
Passports, one would assume that we would be able to do the same with
our
British passport. It follows then that any person with similar
documentation
cannot be prevented from entering our shores or ports. Further, if we
as
registered citizens of Britain will not be subjected to immigration
laws,
then it follows that no British citizen can be so subjected. It would
be
naive to think that when we travel or apply for any position in
Anguilla
that we would have to take two pieces of documentation, one to say
British
citizen and the other to say Anguillian. Of course not!
Our British citizenship will allow us full access to the Channel
Islands and
Isle of Man to any other British Overseas Territory to the UK and by
extension, to the rest of the EU, which means that since the Act
applies to
all of us, they would be allowed unencumbered access to our island.
While it
may not spell reciprocity, it is indeed nothing short of full
reciprocity.
What this means is that people with more and better qualifications can
freely enter our island and take our jobs. therein occupying the most
powerful positions in the public and very important private sector. We
already have significant inefficiencies and loopholes in the work
permit
system and our local human resources are continuously victimized and
bypassed. Although we may not see them running for political
positions, let
us not forget that those who control our economics inevitably control
us. If
they own and/or operate/Manage our businesses, they will have a
significant
say in the day-to-day and long term running of our island.
Lest we forget, it is the purse that speaks loudest that controls the
hand.
We will become their puppets and Anguilla will no longer be for
Anguillians,
but it will be a place for all and any British and indeed European
citizens.
On May 21st 2002 we will become British Citizens.
All is done and there is one resort left. The only way to temporarily
avoid
reciprocity and the free movement of European citizens to Anguilla
without
restrictions is to develop a constitutional framework of the Crown
Dependencies of Jersey and Guernsey.
What a shame it would be when very soon we will have to fight for a
place,
for a job, for a voice in our own island. What will become of us, our
born
and unborn children?
I ask our leaders, "What have we done to educate and prepare the
Anguillian
people for this eventuality?"

Below is an article about what some students at the University of
Northern
Colorado, and others at a local high school, did to protest the racist
mascots. This is truly an issue whose time has come. We must do our
part
by showing our solidarity with our Native American Brothers and
Sisters,
and to make it clear to all on this campus that Black people do not
endorse, acquiese to, nor are we apathetic about, racism in any form.
In
the absence of our voice--LOUDLY--this insult of Chief Wahoo and other
images and actions will continue. We must not sit on the sidelines of
this
issue.

Fightin' Whites Mascot Causes Stir

DENVER (AP) - The idea started among some University of Northern
Colorado
students as a satirical commentary on a local high school's American
Indian
mascot.
The students named their intramural basketball team, made up of
American
Indians, Hispanics and whites, ``The Fightin' Whites.'' They have
designed
jerseys saying ``Every thang's going to be all white,'' with a
caricature
of a middle-aged white man.
``The Fightin' Whites,'' however, have taken on a life of their own.
More than 1,600 e-mails have flooded into the university in Greeley,
north
of Denver. Some say it's about time that a white person is made a
mascot
for a sport team. Others complain the idea as perpetuating yet another
racial stereotype.
``It's obvious some of the people are taking it the way it's not
supposed
to be taken,'' said team member Jeff VanIwarden.
Team members have gotten phone calls from around the country and
invitations to appear on television. They were mentioned by Jay Leno
on the
Tonight Show on Tuesday. The American Indian Movement has weighed in
supporting the name.
The team has been referred to as ``The Fightin' Whities'' around
campus,
and that variant caught on nationally.
The team chose the name after it couldn't persuade nearby Eaton High
School
to abandon its nickname, ``the Fightin' Reds,'' and the American
Indian
caricature on the team logo. The students say the logo is offensive, a
claim Eaton School District Superintendent John Nuspl disputes.
Some critics say the ``Fightin' Whites'' name is the wrong way to
protest
the high school logo.
``If you are fighting against a perceived injustice, is the proper
recourse
to go out and do the very same thing?'' asked Michael Gonsalves of New
York.
Others say the team's mascot should be even more exaggerated than a

continue to use the N word. Whether you spell it NIGGER or NIGGA, you
still
get the WACK Award. Weekend before last, the ridiculous logic of using
this
word came back to haunt us.
A San Jose, California judge allowed a white student who committed a
hate
crime against his black female teacher off the hook. His defense
reasoned
successfully that the white guy did not commit a hate crime when he
vandalized school property because he spelled the N word N-I-G-G-A and
not
N-I-G-G-E-R. Yep, the white guy used the "friendly" version of the
word and
got away with it. Dude wrote 'Thanks Nigga' and had an arrow pointed
to the
teacher's name.
For those who are still shaking their heads in disbelief, here's what
went
down. A white student at a San Jose high school got upset with his
African
American teacher for suspending his white friend. In retaliation he
spray
paints a school wall with the teacher's name and the N word which was
spelled N-I-G-G-A. The police were upset. The teacher was upset and
the
community was appalled. Dude goes on trial for this hate crime and his
defense attorney brings in some witness to testify to the judge that
there's
a difference between the two spellings of the N word. The judge
listens and
lets the white dude off and says no hate crime was committed and thus
a
dangerous precedent is set.
San Jose's Black Police officers association were extremely upset over
the
ruling. After all, they know all to well what this will lead to. Next
time
some cop pulls you over and hurls the N word he can get off by saying
he
said N-I-G-G-A and not N-I-G-G-E-R. Should you be careful before you
file a
racial harassment suit against a coworker or an insensitive boss?
After all,
he or she may actually be using the 'NIGGA' spelling of the word.
I couldn't help recalling the speech that Minister Farrakhan gave at
the
most recent Hip Hop Summit in LA. He emphatically warned us, "If we
keep
putting something out there we will one day have to answer for it."
This
recent court interpretation of this hate crime and the use of the N
word was
proof.
Think about it.

Looks like there's some more hip hop drama brewing. A white rapper
named
Shortyo in Philadelphia has decided to come after Beanie Sigel with a
song
called 'How Lovely.' Shortyo says that he came after Beanie because he
was
in New York on Hot 97 talking about he's the best rapper in Philly ...
OK so
the kid wants some publicity and this is a good way to do it but
homeboy
takes it to an all time low by referring to Beanie as a 'nigga' in the
song.
According to messages posted on the Phillyhiphop.com website Shortyo
says he
has no intention whatsoever to stop using the n word...
I spoke to Shortyo [on Friday March 15] and he explained that his use
of the
word nigga is different from the term nigger which he takes offense
to.
Initially I had spelled the word n-i-g-g-e-r when writing this story
and
only agreed to change it after conversing with Shortyo and getting his
side
of the story. So for the record, Shortyo says his use of the word has
a
different meaning then the n-i-g-g-e-r spelling.
Me, personally I don't agree with him. The use of the word with either
spelling is disparaging. Not to mention when used in the song, Shortyo
was
not being endearing to Beanie. He was blasting him. According to some,
the
use of the term nigga is supposed to be a term of endearment. or a
friendly
greeting. That's not the way he flipped that word in the song.
However, for
the record, Shortyo feels the use of the word, with it being spelled
n-i-g-g-a, is a slang term and hence it was from that perspective he
used it
He emphatically insisted that he is not a racist and he did not want
to
send out the wrong message.
Someone needs to remind Shortyo and trust me I did ... that racist
people
who speak with accents in certain parts of this country and the world
will
actually pronounce -- and in some cases -- even spell the 'N' word in
the
slang style he advocates. One has no way of knowing. As an African
American
who actively and aggressively fights racism the word is offensive. I
also
reminded Shortyo I take issue with the use of the word even when black
artists use it.
I have, along with many others, a long history of speaking out against
the
use of this word. I have a problem when Jay-Z uses it, when P-Diddy
uses and
definitely when Shortyo uses it. As an emcee there are dozens of words
and
phrases that homeboy could've used to lyrically shred Beanie Sigel. He
should've done that and been more clever as opposed to raising a red
flag.
The racial stuff is about to get ugly folks; the constant use of this
word
has gotten a whole lot of folks mad as hell.
