A cold chill ran down my spine this morning when I turned on the radio to
hear the police are questioning a man called Barry Bulsara, who is supposed
to be a Freddie Mercury fanatic, in connection with the murder of Jill
Dando.
A die-hard Queen fan; I popped along to Freddie Mercury's house in Earls
Court to lay some flowers when he died. I was looking at the other flowers
laying along the wall when this white, stretch limo cruised up the road and
stopped outside the house.
A man stepped out who looked rather like Freddie Mercury and a buzz went
round that it was his cousin. He produced a large, white floral tribute in
the shape of an arch, with a gold plaque on the bottom inscribed with a
message, and signed from "your cousin, Barry Bulsara" (Bulsara, being
Mercury's real surname). My sister, knowing I had some artwork of Freddie
on me ( I had it with me to show somebody I was meeting), went and asked him
to sign one of my pictures, which he did.
I watched him surrounded by all these people and it dawned on me that a real
relative would not arrive in such an ostentatious manner, lay a tribute
outside the walls, and sign autographs. He would have just gone inside the
house.
When I got home, I thought "What a pathetic tosser", and blotted out the
signature on the picture, which I later sold.
I dug out some of the photo's I took of the flowers, today, and as I looked
at the picture I took of that floral arch, I had a really weird feeling
inside.

This *is* spooky.

While we're on the subject, I'd like to congratulate the police on taking
over a year to round up this 'well known local nutter' who lived just a few
blocks away.

Are they by any chance the same bright sparks who decided they would have a
'really good look' in the backyard where the Acourts used to live?

Just think...some poor unsuspecting soul has Mr Bulsara's autograph hanging
on their wall. I was quite pissed off at the time because it was a
particularly nice picture he signed.
He was very quiet but clearly loving the attention. Must have cost a bit to
hire that limo too.

Ever heard of a thing called *evidence* ?

The old bill are criticised when they arrest people without evidence, and
here you are criticising them when they wait till they get it !

The bit I don't understand, is that as a Freddie Mercury nut, wouldn't it
make more sense for him to stalk somebody connected with him, rather than
Jill Dando. When I saw him, he didn't strike me as a raving loony, more an
attention seeking twazzock.
..and if you read anything different in the next few days, I never said it.

I have heard they have asked for extra time to question him. I wonder if
these are questions on the line of "(...?)...if you plead guilty, you'll get
off lightly". If I suppose they have some sort of evidence, am I putting
too much faith in the police force?

Well....I'd have been worth a small fortune now if I'd bothered to take his
picture that day...I didn't because I thought he was a bit of a plonker,
standing there with this big flowery arch and a limo big enough to hold a
party in. The Press are falling over themselves trying to get a photo of
him. Dagnabbit...
Mind you, Rogi, surely if someone's nutty enough to go round pretending to
be someone's relative, and turning up at their house in hired limo's,
signing autographs etc, they can't be all the ticket. really, can they? He
even took Live! TV in..a female journo got in the car with him and went
round the block in it intervewing him.

No, it's acceptable in law to arrest people on reasonable suspicion.
When you have evidence you go a step further & charge them. That's why
the Lawrence enquiry criticised the police for not arresting the Acourts
etc. as soon as there was reasonable suspicion based on witness reports
etc. i.e. within 24 hours. That would have enabled them to search the
homes & gardens for evidence which might still have been there at that
early stage (stained clothing, weapons etc.). If they had evidence
against friend Bulsara they would have charged him by now.. They're
hoping for a confession and / or forensics from his habitat. That's why
they originally had 36 hours only after which they had to apply for an
extension of custody (which they got) and they can now hold him for
another couple of days. And if they then release him (which is my bet)
the greed for favourable publicity will have ruined the guy's life. It
would have done no harm for the Police to keep quiet while they sussed
out if he really is a contender.
If you ever want to sue for wrongful arrest it won't be enough to show
that the Police had no evidence against you, you'll have to show absence
of reasonable grounds for suspicion

From what I can glean, the police were at his house six weeks ago taking
computer equipment away for examination. As far as publicity goes; the man
thrived on it. I've met him, and to see him standing outside Mercury's
house talking sorrowfully about his "cousin Freddie" while standing beside a
white stretch limo, was more than a tad ridiculous.
The only bit that bothers me is why he'd want (allegedly) to kill Jill
Dando..I can't see what the interest was....unless he was obsessed with her
too, but then if he was a nuisance to her, surely the police would have
known about him sooner..interesting..

I'm well aware of the legal position John, but the point I was making is
that police are criticised whichever avenue they decide to take in this
enquiry. There are many reasons why he would not be arrested when it comes

I understand your point. I think the reason the Police are criticised on
this one is that a murder takes place in broad daylight of a well-known
person, they saturate the area with resources looking for clues /
evidence / witnesses (remember the newsreel shots from last year? Cops
on the rooftops, Cops in the drains?) and leaked all manner of ''leads''
(Serbs, Hitmen, Stalkers) without, it is now obvious, any good reason to
do so, and every time they pick someone up, someone in the squad
immediately tips off the media. Then they release their 'suspect' and
all goes quiet again for a few months. We'll probably never hear any
more about this guy. If we do e.g. if he goes to trial, I would be V.
interested to know what compelling reason the Police had for arresting
him *now* that didn't exist 6 weeks ago (or last year for that matter)

many reasons, none easy to explain.
i do not feel comfortable with this one.

He's not unemployed, Eric, he's on Invalidity Benefit. Must have got injured

I don't see how he can be charged with murder...he's clearly unbalanced and
lives in a fantasy world. To watch him outside Freddie Mercury's house, as
I did, signing autographs and accepting sympathy from people who thought he
was a relative, shows he wasn't all there. He had his hair slicked back like
Mercury's and it was obvious he was trying to look like him. He even had a
journalist from a cable TV company go round the block with him in this white
stretch limo for an interview. *If* he did do it, I wonder if it had
anything to do with the fact he was supposed to be an ardent Princess Diana
fan and JD was often compared to her....you never know what goes through
someone like that's mind. I suppose I find it all the more fascinating
because I've met him.

So I've heard as well, allowing the govt of the day to get you out of the

do consider 3% unemployment to be "full employment". What cheeky scoundrels

Ah, thanks for putting me right on that. It will be very interesting to see
how this case pans out.
It will also be interesting to see what the motive was (supposing he did it,
that is).

Of course, unfortunately you can say, and the judge can conclude
there's no chance of a trial 'cos people have already decided his
guilt by discussing it...

Surely sensational cases like this will always have people asking "did he?",
"didn't he?"...that's natural; doesn't mean people have decided his guilt,
though.

No, but the whole discussion of guilt/innocence and the going over of
evidence, and even suggestions by people that someone is guilty will
cause problems, you've discussed it a lot, what's going to happen if
you're called up for Jury service in this case?

Jim.

I doubt I'd be able to do it, being that I've met Barry Bulsara.
