Audio on HPUX 10.20 without network?

I recently upgraded my 715/50 to HPUX 10.20. Now I can't play any audio
files. If I try to start the Aserver, it complains that it can't connect
to rpcd. If I try to start rpcd, it fails without any error message.
I think this is caused by the fact that the machine is not connected to a
LAN. However, the loopback interface is up, as far as I can tell.

The audio device worked fine with HPUX 9.05 and I somehow managed to get
it working with 10.01, but the same configuration fails with 10.20.

Is there any way to use audio without RPC? Or is it possible to get rpcd
running without a network?

Please cc by e-mail to koe...@aip.de. I'm reading news via an old account,
which will be deleted sooner or later...

Thanks for any help,
Rainer Koehler

Check DejaNews, this is an old problem which isn't fixed because of
internal quarrels at HP :-( Basically you have to make the machine
believe it's on a network. Plugging a transceiver in the AUI port is
usually sufficient; but you might have to run set_parms again to
configure the system as "networked" with an address different from
127.0.0.1.

I think I already ranted about this the last time this topic came up,
but I still can't believe that you have to tell people that they need
a transceiver for audio; for a normal user this is completely
incomprehensible. HP really doesn't do neither its customers nor
itself a favor with this policy of departments refusing to fix bugs
and pointing at each other and crying "it's their fault!"

Thanks for the answer. I wasn't aware that DejaNews has replaced the
FAQ. It's really frustrating to see that others had exactly the same
problem and obviously didn't find an answer.

The good news (at least for me) is that I found a solution:
I restored /usr/audio/*, llbd (don't remember where it lives) and
libAt.* from my 9.05 backup tape. I replaced rpcd by a symbolic link
to llbd. Now, the 9.05 programs are able to play and record audio, so
my upgrade was no downgrade in this respect. The only problem is that
the buttons in the audio_editor don't have any text in them, so one
has to guess which one does what. Well, you can't have everything.

I hope this helps another poor 715 without a network out there.

I hope you didn't misunderstand me. "Check DejaNews" wasn't meant as
a condescending "RTFM" type of answer. I also didn't want to imply
that DejaNews has replaced the FAQ. Actually, I don't know if this is
in the FAQ (if it's not it certainly should be added, but what I do
know is that I had once asked this question myself and that I've ever
since tried to help anybody with the same problem; thus my reference
to DejaNews--because I know that there should be some postings by
myself on that topic.

Now this is a new solution. I hope that it doesn't have any side
effects...

I'll put together a Web page similar to my "XEmacs on HP-UX" page at
<http://www.linguistik.uni-erlangen.de/~mxp/audio>, where I'll put all
solutions (including yours). Let's hope that all these workarounds
will some day be obsolete...
