To all:

Interesting "late" episode of "L & O" last night (Tuesday/early
Wednesday) on A & E) that was a classic "New York City Slumlord" case. In
the episode (from late in season two) had a baby who was found in a box
under a couch in a hospital that turned out to be stone cold after
freezing to death in his apartment due to the babysitter being unable to
get in. It turns out a "slumlord" was using tactics all too real in New
York to get the tenants-who were there under rent control-out so they
could "renovate" the building and charge outlandish rents.

The "slumlord" that was charged in this case was found guilty. I'd love
to see this episode revisited, in part because it was only noted at the
end she was out pending appeal. It could be written now that "slumlord"
sucessfully got the case overturned on appeal, supposedly because of the
manner that Robinette was used as a sub for Profaci when he was stuck in
a traffic jam. That same "slumlord" had another Joseph Turner-like in the
wings who harrased tenants when the more recent round of "renovating"
apartments began, especially with the rents as high as they are now in
parts of Manhattan, and now a similar incident happens to the one in
season two, only this time, the Joseph Turner-like tries to "send a
message" to the DAs office, something on a smaller scale of the Russian
mob hit in last season's finale.

Called "Cradle to Grave," and an excellent episode. I especially loved the
part where Logan asks Robinette for his jacket back after catching the
building inspector. Robinette doesn't say anything nor does he give it
back, but just kind of straightens the jacket a bit on himself. It's that
kind of impromptu camraderie that is missing from the current season.

That was my question. First, they flash a screen at the end that says the
woman was out on bail pending appeal, right? So, I thought it was a real
case. Then, they have the usual disclaimer that, "This story is fictional,
blah blah blah." So, which is it? I presume it's fictional, but then why
did they flash that thing at the end?

Hey, don't forget how Jack is conveniently sick during this trial, and it
becomes Abbie's "showcase" and she gets promoted to Manhattan DA and Claire
comes out of her coma to defend Joseph Turner and...

J/K. I am totally kidding. This is a JOKE, Walt, don't get any new ideas
(not that I can stop you).

Yes! That is one of my favorite Robinette moments. I know he's
not
a favorite among many people here, but I liked him. (I also just
love him in Good vs. Evil, which unfortunate looks like it's
getting axed. Bummer).

And I just love that coat, I don't think I'd give it back either
but for probably different reasons.

You mean between the DA's team and the cops? Well, it's been fairly well
established that Briscoe and McCoy don't get along (neither did Curtis and
McCoy). So it's fair to say that relationships between the two teams have
cooled somewhat.

Yes, I've always liked that little bit of byplay with the coat. Robinette
actually almost smiles!

> did they flash that thing at the end?

They did this quite a bit in the early episodes whenever a case wasn't
resolved during the episode, or when they went for a dramatic ending by
closing on Stone's summation to the jury or some other courtroom scene
instead of the verdict.

For example "Heaven" in season 2 (the social club fire) ends with the
camera panning around a courtroom full of weeping relatives as a court
reporter reads the names of the dead -- very effective. Then you see a
screen with the verdict and details of the sentences.

They always flash a disclaimer no matter how closely the episode follows
the RL case. Of course, it's not true (think of "Indifference"
where the disclaimer specifically says that the dead child's mother is not
based on Hedda Nusbaum when we all know perfectly well it was).

But presumably it's all they need to protect themselves from legal action
by someone portrayed in the show, as long as they don't use the real names.

To all:

One reason I would to see a revisit of "Cradle To Grave" (an episode I never
saw until it aired late Tuesday) is because what happened in that episode not
only likely still happens in New York, but it probably is worse now than it was
in 1992 (when that episode aired), especially with the economy the way it is in
NYC and the rents going through the roof.

I could see an episode similar to "Cradle To Grave" where someone freezes in
their apartment, and for this episode, Robinette agrees to return to the DA's
office as a "hired gun" because it's a case where race doesn't matter, and he
knows people in similar situations to a "slumlord" in the original 1992
epsiode. The episode (as noted earlier) could have Iris Corman with another
Joseph Turner-like who terrorizes tenants, and this time after seeing Abbie and
her hard-nosed way of dealing with Cornman and the new version of Joseph Turner
(after she is chosen to lead the prosecution of the case), Cornman decides the
way to win is to make Abbie incapable of prosecuting them without killing her,
and at the same time scaring most of the other ADAs off that case, with
Robinette then coming back as the "hired gun."

Tenants are more savvy now than they were before, and tenant rights
organizations are there--in person, on the phone, in writing, and on the
'Net--to help them. These things were quite rare before.

So Walt, it's no worse. And Walt, the economy is as shitty in NYC as it is
everywhere else. Rents are going through the roof because greedy landlords know
that they can illegally jack up the price and the socially ignorant
acquisitions experts of the ultra-nouveau techno riche will gladly pony up for
trendy addresses, even if they're in the cruddiest neighborhoods. The lower and
middle classes, who haven't and won't benefit from the "boom economy," don't
have a chance when they go up against these barracudas.

Walt, do you know that the *registered* rental prices of many NYC apartments is
actually much lower than these landlords charge?

You are right, many of the people who pay these jacked up rents earn so much
