Add to a menu

[David E. Hulme]

Once upon a time, with Excel95, I could add my own macro to
*any* of the menu drop-down lists (not merely the tools menu).
Now I have Excel97, can anyone tell me how to add a menu item to
the *help* or *window* menu lists? The online help is not
helpful in telling me where to look for help!

Its exactly the same as if you wanted to customize a toolbar.
Right click while the pointer is over a toolbar, select Customise
In the Customise Window select the Commands Tab and scroll to the
bottom of the categories listuntil you see 'New Menu'
Select 'New Menu', then in the right pane, Commands, sellect 'New
Menu' and drag it to the menu bar on the worksheet, in the position
that you want it.
While it's still selected, click the button called 'Modify Selection'
in the customise window...

...I think by now you'll figure the rest out for yourself...

That wasn't what I wanted, I already figured that out. I want to *add*
to the *help* dropdown list not create a new list.

I did it though! The trick is to have the "customise" active, and then
select the menu list (eg Help), then drag and drop the newmenu item
where required. I was trying to do it the other way around and merely
received an angry BEEP from my machine.

Thanks anyway for giving me a cup of perseverance.

If you are still in a generous mood...
For some reason the macro when called by the above method does not wait
for a click, it starts when hovered over the new menu. Ideas?

I can't replicate the problem

I 'customise the HELP menu by dropping in a Custom Menu Item from the
Macros category of the Commans tab, then I assigned a macro to the new
menu item.

I found that this worked 'normally' in that I had to 'click' the item
to call the code.

toolbars, but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to get there.

Each of those topics has a link to a help page.

In the help menu I selected Contents and Index
I went into the Find tab and searched on Customize
This resulted in 3 main topics. I selected the first (the second works to)
which was a lowercase customize. I then scrolled pretty far down in the
lower listbox until I found "Customize toolbars" and I checked that box and
hit the display button.
