Flashing BIOS Problem on PR440FX

I am trying to flash the latest BIOS (v8) to my PR440FX motherboard.

I currently have v1 of the bios.

I downloaded the update and made a DOS6.22 (and tried a Win95) boot disk, and loaded the bios files as per the instructions.

When I try to apply the bios, I get an error,
"(L05) - Unable to prepare for flash erasure" error.
Hitting Enter gives the message
"(H02) - Initialization for flash programming faild"

I have also tried the V7 bios from the FTP site, and it gives the same error.
I have read the PR440FX Motherboard Product Specification 'manual' and cannot figure what I may be doing wrong.

How can I update the BIOS?

Additional Information.

My current BIOS ID String via the BIOS Setup Screen is 1.00.01.DI08
I am trying to install bios 1.00.08.DI0

I solved the problem. Apparently, the intel bios update program recognized that my MB had a bios from Toshiba, (the computer supplier), and would not overwrite the Intel bios over the 'Toshiba' bios.

I verified that the flash bios update 'function' did work, by re-flashing the v1 bios from the Toshiba web site. It updated properly.

To load the v8 Bios, I simply put in the bios update disk, and set the flash recover jumper to 'recover' mode, and turned on the computer. The system 'recovered' the bios from the v8 Intel bios, and now I have v8 working fine.

Hi,
Please keep reporting your experiences over the next few weeks to see
whether the original bios is really compatible. Makes life easier for
those who cannot get an OEM update of their bios. If this trick works
contrary to what Intel wishes us to believe we can all safely flash
original bioses to the OEM boards. Do keep in mind however, if you
report a problem you still have the service on an OEM board (Which to my
opinion is very close to NTN (Next To Nothing)). Thanks for the info
however, I'll put this one on the list as being a "maybe".

I flashed the original v8 bios, and have had NO problems what so-ever.
I had NT Server 4sp3 running prior to updating the bios, and it worked same as always with 'narry a problem at all.

Tonight I am clearing the HD and setting up W95, NT Server 4, and 'testing' partitions. (I had NT setup prior to test RRAS)

FYI, I bought the MB at the Onsale auction, and it would seem that it came from/was destined for a Toshiba 6200M computer, and as such I only got the bare motherboard anyway.

What's the problem here?
I also am getting and error from NT using 3 Seagate Baracuda 4.5 Gig drives. It
will not format over 1 gig, yet the over 1 gig support is enabled on the SCSI
bios!

Where can we find the drivers for the Adaptec 7880?
They are not on the intel or adaptec site that I can find.

I am also getting the same flash problem as you...

I also bought my PR440FX bare, from OnSale..would you have any suggestions
on how to get it up and running smoothly?...I mean, problems that you might
have encountered etc..

Hi,
Then you have a board that is (also?) OEM'd to Toshiba for thier
Equium 6200M server. Now where did OnSale get those boards, I wonder,
and
what would be Intel's point of view here. It's a Toshiba/not a Toshiba,
at least not bought as being Toshiba. Go figure...

The '8' in your BIOS identifier indicates you have an OEM version of
the PR440FX motherboard. Information on the PR440FX motherboard,
commonly referred to as 'Providence' can be found at URL
http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/pr/index.htm

Intel direct OEM's may specify for different versions of the
motherboard and BIOS. You can contact an Intel Authorized Distributor
for information on Intel manufactured motherboards available from Intel
Authorized Distributors.
