The NWN 1.21 patch implements Securom in a different manner than the
previous patches. 1.21 places a Securom registry key in the registry.
The key did not exist prior to 1.21. Doing a registry search for
Securom yielded nothing on my WinXP NWN 1.20 system. A search after
updating to 1.21 will show you the Securom key added by 1.21.

Bioware, on their website, at first stated that there had been no
Securom changes in patch 1.21. This statement was based upon
information that they had received from Securom. Later they stated
that there had indeed been changes in Securom and that they had been
belatedly informed of that by Securom.

Many copies of the play disk that had worked fine with patch 1.20 and
prior patches will not work with version 1.21. The most common
instance seems to be NWLOADER starting, and then a return to the
desktop with the game never appearing.

Some people have reported a delay of up to five minutes in starting
the game using the original play disk.

There is also a confirmed bug in 1.21, in which items that grant extra
skill points in one area cause skills in other areas to go to zero.
Bioware stated that this bug will be fixed in the next patch.

After installing patch 1.21 and experiencing some of these issues
myself, I downloaded the 1.20 patch (app. 32mb) and applied it
directly over 1.21. This seemed to work without any problems.

I gathered this information from the Bioware forums and my own
experience, and am posting it here in case it may be helpful to
someone.

Have you tried, instead, to "configure" your game after you applied
the patch?

I believe that to be the answer to many persons woes.

I just upgraded from 1.20 to 1.21 and it loaded my game without grief. Didn't
have to go into Configure either.

I started thinking something odd was going on in
comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.rpg when one foggy november evening Alex
<sup...@microsoft.com> came into my office and told me:

but alas not all - there's the "loss of skill every time you equip an
item" bug for one, a really annoying one that makes gameplay
difficult... :(

Yeah, that configure "trick" is only for those who have "woes" if you
don't, great!

No, I did not. I didn't want to deal with the "skills bug" anyway, so
I just went back to 1.20 until things straighten out.
