Well, she's already hit the basic requirement--you have to like
Transformers. "Transfan" is just a contraction of "Transformers fan,"
and that's all you really need.

If she's wondering how you become a member of the online Transfan
community, well, that's a little trickier, but still easy to do. It
all comes down to read and read and read and, when you feel ready,
post, then post some more. Talk to people, let people talk to you,
and make friends and hang out and stuff.

But none of that's really necessary to being a Transfan. You just
have to like the show, the toys, the comics, or any or all of the
above.

Hope that helps.

A Transformer fan is someone who likes the Transformer toys, comics,
and/or cartoons, and considers themselves a fan. Doesn't matter if it's
G1, MW, G2, or BW.

A much more interesting question IMO is the aformentioned "how do you
become a Transformer fan?" For me, what kept it going in my mind was the
idea of these robots having all sorts of adventures on all sorts of
planets and across space and time, with this grand, epic feel to it all.
I never quite got that from most of the cartoons or comics, but the
potential was always there. Later I found Furman's US comics run, and
felt rather vindicated.

Of course, it helps that the toys are really nifty, and that BW has
great characters and fun stories and amazing animation...

When considering how to answer this question, I consulted a wide
variety of metaphysical sources to cull the knowledge I would need. In
short, I have come to the following conclusion:

Question: "How do I become a Transformers fan?"

Answer: "Like Transformers."

Okay, it has been established what it takes to become a TF fan: like
Transformers. But I think the real question being asked was more akin to
"how does one become a notorious Transformers fan?" The equivalent of being
a Trekkie rather than just liking Star Trek.
This, of course, brings up the issue of what to call the more fanatical
Transfans.
1) Transfan - too easy to confuse with the saner TF fans.
2) Transfanatics - Would work, but is also used by a specific group of
fans as a sort of club name.
3) Trannies - Has the sound of Trekkies, but it's already in use as the
awards name.
4) Transies - This means something ENTIRELY different. Don't go there.

Obviously, there's other terms I could suggest, but none of them sound
like the sort of thing which a group would naturally come to call themselves
(such as "Cybertronians") or which would make enough sense to the popular
press that the term would be spread nationwide and picked up by other fans.

Anyway, regardless of what we call such fans, I think one defining
characteristic would be the ability to discuss at length, with great
seriousness and perhaps even fervor, aspects of the fandom. In other words,
a casual fan never loses sight of the fact that it's just a show, they should
really just relax. But the fanatic fan will often catch him- or herself
defending an opinion on where the Axalon crashed as firmly as they would
their stance on freedom of speech...if not more strongly. The serious fan,
no matter how grounded in reality most of the time, will go overboard on the
subject of the fanaticism if given a chance.
This fanaticism is usually accompanied by visual cues, like ownership of
vast numbers of toys or videos or comics, but you can be just as fanatic
without having the financial means to express it fully.

Dave Van Domelen, has all mass-release BW toys except for Buzz Saw, all
the eps on tape, and one of the biggest BW webpages out there...so he
probably counts as a "serious" fan....

I'm going to one-up Tengu and say that a TransFan is someone who holds
deep convictions about Transformerdom - both positive and negative
connotations. That begs the question, though, what is this category
"Transformerdom" and what does it incorporate? Not for me to answer this
century...

YOU DONT HAVE BUZZSAW AND YOU CALL YOURSELF A REAL FAN HA HA HA WHAT A JOKE
AGE/SEX

Heh heh, that was a JOKE in case people saw the AOL address and thought I was
yet another retard. :)

As far as being a real fan, do we really need all these segregations? Are we
going to have to adopt a geek code to be judged by? Once people find out I've
only seen about 3 Japanese episodes, am I going to be shunned? Once they find
out that my G1 & G2 collection fits on the top of a chest of drawers (and I
have Scorponok and Trypticon, too), am I suddenly a lesser being?

I know that the whole idea here was started in good faith and wasn't meant to
segregate people, but where will it end up? I worry that eventually this will
turn into people wanting to feel better than everybody else. ("You havent seen
TF Zone?? LOOOOSER!!") But hey, as long as we can keep it cool and not devolve
into something "worthy" of ATT, lets just remember, we're ALL fans....

"Can't we all just get along??" >;)
I believe a TF gestalt named "Rodney King Poseidon" said that in one of the
Japanese eps, but I could be mistaken....

OH No! Not the infamous Elders!!!!

How could you?

:)

For those who don't know the "Elders" are a long running joke/flame fest
on many newsgroups. My first encounter with the "Elders" was on
alt.comics.lnh where a group of "Elders" were formed called the council
of Elders. There various people were assigned to be elders and their
job was to welcome people into the group, maintain the FAQS and rosters
etc. There they formulized it a bit.

On Alt.toys.transformers the "Elder's Council" was never formally formed.
Instead the term "Elder" was used as an insult by new members against old
members.

I have heard Robert Jung, HooksX, and Ben Yee to name a few accused of
being "Elders". (Now I'm feeling left out since I have been on ATT since
the beginning. Actually, before the beginning if you count the email list :)
Robert Jung took the term, ran with it and turned it into a joke. (Which is
where it should stay) You will occaisionally see him refer to himself
as "Old Man of the usenet" and threatening to hit the young wippersnappers
with his cane. :)

If you think about it everyone here now will probably be refered to as
"Elders" of the group given a year or two.

Anyhow... Now that I've managed to wander COMPLETELY off topic I hope
RTTMod never sees the backlash/bad meaning of "Elders" that ATT did.

Well, as I said in the part you snipped, the possessions are really only
an outward sign. The true division is between those who take it a leeetle
too seriously and those who are just casually interested. I'm not trying to
distinguish between the serious fan and the truly deranged, but between the
casual and the serious. For instance, I'm a fan of the Packers, being from
Wisconsin, but I have never painted myself green and gold, and rarely watch
the games. I am a casual fan of the Packers. However, I have put meter-wide
Decepticon symbols on my car...I don't think this is the act of a casual
Transformers fan. Or of a totally sane person, but that's another issue
entirely.

Of course, here's a good litmus test: if you actually care about the
definition of a "serious" fan, you probably are one.

Dave Van Domelen, loves wrapping things up in tautologies....

Nah. That handicaps against fans who came in later in the game. How about
simply, "knows and appreciates the difference between Transformers/Beast Wars
and other [inferior B-] toy lines."?

Or maybe we can ask Diana Calder to re-release her Transformers Fan Purity
test once again...?

Is it too late for me to register the term "TransFanatic"? Seeing as how I
*DID* use it for a vacation party last year... B-)

This qualifies for "get a life" status, IMO. B-) Seeing fifty or more of
the Japanese episodes isn't too hard (just watching two-out-of-three of
VICTORY, MASTERFORCE, or HEADMASTERS will do the job), but watching the movie
in the triple digits is a bit much...

Rate them like batteries -- An "AAA" TransFan, for example, is a casual fan.
Whereas a "9 volt" TransFan is more enthused, and a "D" TransFan is a real
devotee. And save the "car battery" TransFans for the Hartmans. B-)

First, we trap the unsuspecting TransFan (a ®™ of Hasbro & Takara) by placing
an easy-to-transform Autobot or Decepticon, Maximal or Predacon toy on a
table. Then we leave the room.

Two days later, if we enter that room to find said toy being manipulated by
the aforesaid unsuspecting TransFan®™ in a drooling dither, we can safely
assume that this person has lost his or her marbles, and should be taken
immediately to the nearest hospital, toy store or BotCon®™, whichever comes
first!

Purity test? Hummm... I'm older than most fans... have many of the early T-

What is a TransFan?

Hmm, let's see now .... he:

- Gets depressed because he's got zero chance of ever attending BotCon. Aargh.

- Endures the jibes of his peers who don't understands his passion for "those
toys from the TV show."

- Cancelled all 5.30 p.m. Wednesday appointments/engagements for two years
running because that's when they show the animated series. And when he
couldn't wriggle out of an engagement, he persuaded the long-suffering
best-friend to tape the show. ("And make sure you edit out the commercials.")

- Thought nothing of travelling 40km to the nearest newstand that sold the UK
comic. ("Has Transformers issue 150 arrived yet? Has it? Has it?")

- Spends hours pouring over TF toy catalogs, wishing he had a kajillion (give
or take a zillion)dollars. ("Fortress Maximus. Must get Fortress Maximus.")

- Spends a bare minimum of two hours at toy stores, looking at every TF toy
box/card (drawing "Jeez, can you believe this guy?" glances from other
adults), agonising over which one to get. Should he get this one? But he could
buy two of those others for the same price. ("Wish I had a kajillion dollars.
Aargh.")

- Is exceedingly proud of his ability to draw a passable Optimus Prime and
Megatron.

- Gets very depressed when no one recognises the characters he's just drawn.
("That's nice, son. Is that, uh, C3, uh, D2?")

- Thought TF:TM was the greatest work of animation EVER. Okay, so maybe Ghost
in the Shell had a superior storyline but hey, it didn't have Optimus Prime
kicking rear bumpers and taking names while "The Touch" played in the
background.

- Got a major case of goosebumps recently when he heard "Dare" for the first
time in six years. Woo hoo! "If you're gonna ride [snip], ride in style!"

- Has spent hours online collecting TF info. ("Ah, toy catalog scans. Yesss!")

- Was thrilled when he realised that there were others like him online. ("I'm
not alone. Yesss!")

Uh, you do understand that I'm not describing myself. I was talking about "a
friend." ;)

What is a TranFan? Here are some additional descriptions. A TransFan:

= Was the dealer at Botcon who marked down an Ironhide so that the kid with
the wistful expression and a light wallet could own one.

= Organises a convention annually for fellow TransFans even though it makes no
sense financially.

= Is the one who spent hours creating RealVideo versions of the G1
episodes/The Movie so that fellow TransFans could enjoy them.

= Posted BotCon reviews/photos so that the hundreds (thousands?) who could not
attend could enjoy the convention vicariously.

= Stoutly defends the questionable actions of his/her favourite characters.

= Is the moderator who spent time removing those annoying smart quotes used
inadvertently by a poster in his long, rambling, semi-pointless post. Thanks
to Chris/ Vulcana/whoever it was. Won't happen again. Promise! :)

Cheers,
