Hidehiko Yoshida defeated Royce Gracie by referee stoppage from a
gi-choke in the first round in 7 minutes, 24 seconds. Hidehiko Yoshida
came to the ring with Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, Michiyoshi Ohara, & Shungo
Oyama as his ring seconds. Royler, Helio, and other members of the
Gracie family came to the ring with Royce Gracie. The fight started
with Royce going to the mat first and Yoshida trying to get a
heel-hold while Royce attempted an arm-scissors hold. Royce countered
Yoshida's heel-hook by cranking on Yoshida's leg, leading to both men
back at a standing position. Royce attempted a guard on Yoshida but
Yoshida slammed Royce to the mat. As Royce continued to attempt a
guard position, Yoshida went for a choke and got the submission --
according to the referee. Royce, however, says that he didn't give-up
and there was a large commotion. The referee declared Yoshida the
winner by choke from the gi. However, the TV announcers clearly agree
with the Gracie camp and believe that Royce never submitted. Royce
Gracie was furious.
Hidehiko Yoshida did a microphone performance after the match and said
that he felt that Royce Gracie did not give up by submission and that
he would have a re-match.
