There are times when I get really bored, having read (and reread) most of
the good fanfic authors I know, that I go seeking out new fanfic.
The problem? There's too much out there. I checked fanfiction.net. It
has over 15,000 entries for, for example, Sailor Moon, and, quite frankly,
I don't want to wander through the crud to find the gem.
So I'm turning to people here. What are YOUR favorite fanfics, where are
they located, and why do you like them?
Joel
My personal favorite anime fanfic is "Genma's Daughter" which you can
find over at the RAAC Archives (
ftp://ftp.cs.ubc.ca/pub/archive/anime-fan-works/ ) in the Ranma
section.
I like it because it's a long, solid story which actually pulls off
one of the oldest Ranma ½ fanplots around (Ranma was really Ranko all
along), resolves the resulting plot conflicts (Starting with Akane and
working down) while avoiding every other Ranmaverse cliché I can
think of (The change does not make Ranma even more powerful, Akane
does not instantly decide she loves Ranma no matter what form (s)he's
in, etc.)
Ranma ½ tends to be my favorite fanfic genre because it seems to have
a higher cool-to-crap ratio than other titles, IMHO.

plan to, lest the sight blow my ideals out of the water...)

I'm not into fanfiction, but I did hear some praise about a writer by
the alias of "Agent Orange" for his Cowboy Bebop fanfics.
Sarah-neko/Deesses' Escaflowne fic "Scars on the Heart" and Cowboy
Bebop fic "Cowboy Shebop" are the best I've ever read.

Vince Seifert's "Taming of the Horse":
http://www.csus.edu/indiv/s/seifertv/toth/
The best of the continuation fics. Seifert has a good, sympathetic
grasp of Ranma and Akane's personalities; Ranma may be somewhat
more mature than in the manga, but it's not unbelievable that
Phoenix Mountain made him grow up a bit, and it is necessary to
get the fic to progress in a very satisfactory fashion. The
support cast are all meticulously well done, and it's just a joy
to read. Having mostly disposed of Ranma and Akane's problems,
Seifert is starting to move the sequel fic, "Centaur", to Kasumi,
which is proving to be great fun: Seifert pulls off the amazing
feat of a Kasumi-Pantyhose Taro-Dr. Tofu love triangle, and,
*yes*, he makes it work and look believable.
Robert Haynie's "Girl Days":
http://www.knology.net/~kenjiko2/
The best of the original-flavor fics. Haynie has a knack for
a good Pratchett-style turn of phrase as well as a gift for
comic invention. Never very serious, but lots of good fun.
A refreshing change of pace: Ranma forced to be a girl for
a long period of time *without* the angst.
Jeff Hosmer and John Biles's "Sailor Moon Z"
(no, it's not a Dragonball Z crossover!):
http://www.dkcomm.net/jhosmer/index.html
http://www.dkcomm.net/rhea/falcon.html (scroll down)
Excellent Sailor Moon continuation fic, starting at the
end of Sailor Moon S and basically replacing Super S and
Stars. Great characterization of all the Senshi, Inner
and Outer, and one of the best depictions of Sailor
Pluto it's ever been my pleasure to read. Fits into a
conintuity with a lot of companion fics, but this is
definitely the centerpiece.
Mark MacKinnon's "Shadow Chronicles":
http://www.shadowchronicles.net/
MacKinnon takes the old "alternate worlds" concept and gives
it fresh, and harrowing, look. Well written, well plotted,
good characterization make this a fic that will keep you
on the edge of your seat. He's dropped what had been the
main thread of the narrative at a big cliffhanger to follow
a different part of the story for a while, a fact that has
me gnawing the furniture, 'cause I *really* want to see that
cliffhanger get resolved...
Transpacific Fanfiction:
http://www.thekeep.org/~mike/transp.html
A whole lotta goodness in one place. Ones to particularly
note: "Pastpresent" by Susan Doenime, "Ill Met by Starlight"
by Mike Loader and Susan Doenime, "Bliss" by Mike Loader and
Lara Bartram, "Poison" by Susan Doenime (this fic packs more
sheer power per word than any other I know of), and "Ghost
Story", by Mike Loader.
There are a lot more that I enjoy, but I think those are about
the best of the best.

(Cut-and-paste from my May 30 post about this over on
rec.arts.anime.fandom, with extra notes added...)
Well, here's my list of the dozen best fanfics that I didn't write:
1. Cevn McGuire's "Trial by Tenderness" (an alternate Oh My Goddess!
timeline - each chapter is as long as some people's multi-part
fanfics, and there's over a hunderd chapters so far...)
<http://trialbytenderness.guildspace.com/>
2. Libby Thomas & Rob Barba's "Duet of Pigtails" (a
continuation/crossover of Ranma 1/2 and Magic Knight Rayearth -
yes, it suffers from some "fanon" cliches, but this is the story
where many of those cliches actually came from)
<ftp://ftp.cs.ubc.ca/pub/archive/anime-fan-works/Ranma/Duet-of-Pigtails/>
3. Bert Van Vliet's "Bubblegum Zone" (an alternate Bubblegum Crisis
timeline, and one of the better "self-inserts" out there)
<http://www.bgcrisis.com/zone/index.html>
4. David Pascal's "Koyuki’s Red Pinwheel" (a Saber Marionette J
continuation written before Saber Marionette J to X was released,
focusing on some of the lesser-used characters from the series)
<http://www.geocities.com/~davidpascal/fics/koyuki.html>
5. June Geraci's "Just Add Hot Water" (a Ranma 1/2
sidestory/crossover - almost pure fluff, and captures the insanity
of the Ranma 1/2 setting very well)
<http://karaohki.anifics.com/godzilla.htm>
6. Michael McAvoy's "No Need For Sasami" (possibly the most famous
Tenchi Muyo! continuation story)
<http://www.angelfire.com/va3/shenandoah/fanfic/cycle1.html>
7. Jeanne Hedge's "We Just Want to Help You" (an alternate Bubblegum
Crisis timeline, and one of the funnier "self-inserts" out there)
<http://www.jhedge.com/story/anime/helpyou.htm>
8. Mike "Mako-chan" Koos' "Instruments of Change" (a
continuation/crossover of Oh My Goddess! and Ranma 1/2 - not without
it's share of "fanon" cliches, though)
<http://www.anime.sobhrach.com/~makoto/iocmain.htm>
9. John Biles' "Dance of Shiva" (the "classic" massive
crossover/alternate timeline - Bubblegum Crisis, Tenchi Muyo!,
Sailor Moon, Patlabor, and many, many more)
<http://www.maison-otaku.net/~rhea/Shiva/Shiva1.html>
10. Bob Schroeck's "Drunkard's Walk" (fanfic by a "real" writer - a
massive crossover is planned, but so far, it's "just" a character
from his Warriors' World setting in an alternate Bubblegum Crisis
timeline)
<http://www.eclipse.net/~rms/dwmain.html>
11. Blade and Epislon's "Ran Wars" (a decidedly different fusion of
Ranma 1/2 and Star Wars)
<http://web.archive.org/web/20010529111557/www.crosswinds.net/~ayiekie/ranwars.htm>
12. Robert Haynie's "Girl Days" (a Ranma 1/2 continuation that suffers
from wonky continuity - the way people act in this story, it has to
be set after manga volume #34 and before manga volume #20 at the
same time - but is still a decent comedy)

That's 'cause it's most probably not a Manga fanfic, but an Anime fanfic.
AFAIR, none of the manga-only storylines are ever mentioned in the fic - not
Taro, Herb, Saffron, Ryu, or anyone else. Tacking on a "Nodoka discovers"
scene at the end of the published anime isn't that hard, and the story picks
up from there. (Also a reason why Nodoka doesn't appear to be as batty as in
the manga, as she had only what, two appearances? in the anime.)

There's also Destiny's Child:
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~dzillman/fire/
The rest of Fire's fics are good too.
The Sailor Moon Expanded universe:
http://www.tuxedomask.com/SailorMoonExpanded/index.html
I recomend all of Mark Latus's fics especially, but most of the fics
there are good.
And finally, Tales of the Younger Senshi:

And again, others on the page are good too.

I'm haven't read a lot of fanfiction but the one I have to recommend
is Children of an Elder God, a Lovecraft/Eva crossover:

There's still Mousse's behaviour to consider, though. Even in the
anime, he's mellowed out enough by the time Nodoka shows up that he
isn't dreaming of committimg grevious bodily harm on Ranma, which he
seems to be in "Girl Days".
But that's okay - as an example of "fanfic Ranma 1/2", as opposed to
"manga Ranma 1/2" or "anime Ranma 1/2", "Girl Days" is a pretty good
story.

Agent Orange's Cowboy Bebop fanfiction is my most favorite:
http://www.big-big-truck.com/bebop/ao/
I like her work because I feel she has a real grasp of the characters, and a
tallent for witty verbage.
My second favorite is Ranma 1/2: Hearts of Ice:
http://www.akane.org/heartsofice/
It's incomplete, and I really don't have much faith that it ever will be
completed (no offense, Krista), but what there is of it is really well
crafted.

My personal favorite is "Vejiitasei Ascendant," located at:
http://www.geocities.com/bulmasan
A great AU (if you like those--and I usually don't, but I love this one) for
DBZ. I really can't summarize it, as so much is going on with different
characters. Basically, Freeza never destroyed Planet Vejiita, and the two
empires exist (not exactly peacefully). It starts out with Vejiita's
childhood, then the Saiya-jin coming to Earth, and meeting (and fighting) with
the other characters.
Aack, I'm really not good at this. Anyone else read it that can describe it
better?
It's still unfinished, but shows signs of possibly being completed in the
future.

Give Inuyasha back his pot!
It has to be one of my faves, along with Paragon (by the same author),
though the two things that bug me are:-
Minor bug: Some of the grammar is a little off
Major bug: Neither title is complete.
But then these are problems with the majority of fanfics, IMHO. Even the
folk that write the legit originals sometimes have a problem finishing a
story. You get an idea for the story, or at least the start of it, but you
may not necessarily have any ideas for the end.
As for following the canon version, I'm not so worried. Particularly in
stories such as Girl Days, more so with crossover fics, you have to allow
the authors a little bit of license or it would probably never get
written. Just sit back, relax, read and have a damn good laugh! ^_^

I know the feeling. (Actually, I've got a slightly different problem
with my big fanfic - I know excatly how it's going to end, but I'm
having trouble with the middle part. This is what I get for deciding to
put a few of the lesser-used, and thus lesser-developed, characters from
the three series into the story...)
