Not all MAME people are interested in pinball emulation, but
Baby Pacman is quite an exception. I just wanted to let you
know.

What's the difference between VpinMAME and Visual Pinball? Isn't VpinMAME only
able to emulate the scoreboards?

Visual Pinball and VpinMAME work together -- if you've got the table
for, say, Theater of Magic and the ROMs as well, you can play the Visual
Pinball table with VpinMAME emulating the scoreboard portion.
Sort of a combined "simulation and emulation", and very cool. (The
combination of Visual Pinball and PinMAME is called "VpinMAME" for
short.)

OOohhhhhhh! I seeee! Last time I looked at the pinMAME stuff, it only emulated
the scoreboards and did nothing else and was connected to nothing else, wow,
</oldfart> I feel so behind the times. </oldfart>
Here's a good guide for trying out the whole VpinMAME experience:
http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/pinmameguide.htm
Lots and lots of fun, trust me!
I know Visual Pinball is tons of fun, I have about two hundred tables on
my computer, damnit, now I have to spend endless hours installing and playing
other pinball tables.... wait a minute, that's fun! :) Thanks for the info.
It's been fav placed.
Well Tony, you got that right. :)
I'll save you from a lot of searching. The best place to find
VPinMAME tables are:

Go to http://www.vpfreeforums
if you need to ask the ROMs location.

Just great, thanks a lot. I really needed another addiction. :P

Quite nice and informative:

Yeah I know Dave, I've been there. When MAME originally came out it
almost broke my marriage.
Thank god I was already divorced when I found out about Visual
Pinball. :)
You know, I'm noticing that a lot of the crew here are divorced...kind
of scares me a bit...
Is there any way to remap the keys from the arrow keys with baby
pacman? I am trying to use the X-Arcade stick and it seems to map the
arrow keys with the key pad arrows and baby pacman will not accept the
key pad arrows. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks for your help. Awesome game and a great job.

Lucky bastard. a wife who likes your hobbies. most guys would kill for one
like that.
One of my best friends however married a girl about 12 years his junior
and she *is* into the same things which is a major bonus for him....now
thats a lucky bastard :P~

Big time LAMB
Not a simple way, sorry.
It's designed to be functional with the arrow keys. This was the
first time I heard someone was trying to use a joystick with VP. :)
And thanks for the compliments.

Seriously, I think it's a trend. Most of my friends in their
30'S and mid-30'S are divorced now. Not even good relationships
last forever in these days.
People are too busy to build their careers and generally
act like selfish bastards. Yeah, I'm guilty as well. But
I'm not complaining really, my new girlfriend is 7 years
younger than my ex-wife. She doesn't understand cool things
like MAME and pinball emulation though. But hey, how many
24-year old women do? :)
Yeah, but wait until she finds your Danish Porn movie collection. :)

And if she's down with that, hang on to that lady for dear life. }:D

Actually, I'm kind of bummed. It looks like VP always registers '3' and
'4' as coin inserts, even if I reassign the keys. The pinball flipper
buttons on my HotRod are mapped to those keys, so I can't use them without
inserting like 500 credits per game. :)
But before I come off like a total whiner, VP rules and Baby Pacman looks
fantastic. It's easily one of the coolest tables.

Don't Worry, Be Happy.
-- Meher Baba
1. all keyhandling is done by VP. The normal mame keyboard settings menu etc
is available in VPM but it is not used during gameplay. The reason is that
only one windows application at a time can receive input and while playing a
table, VP is the active application. This also means that even if MAME by
default supports various kinds of joysticks etc you can't use them when
playing a table.
2. all keyboard handling in VP is carried out in the script. You can set up
the keys for flippers etc in the VP settings dialogue but they will not do
anything unless the table creator activly writes code for it in the the
script. (e.g. "if keycode = LeftFlipperKey then ...").
3. Visual Pinball only supports keyboard input. If you want to use
joystick/mouse to play you need to use some program that converts the
movements into keystrokes. I have never tried this myself so I can't give
any advice.
Now over to the keyboard mapping for VP/VPM tables.
(Almost all VP/VPM tables use a set of standard scripts which means that
they should all work the same way but the table creator decides to what
extent he follows the standard so I can't guarantee that what I say here
works for all tables.)
The settings menu for VP allow you to specify keys for left & right flipper,
plunger, nudging, startbutton and insert coin. These keys are fine for most
tables you create yourself but when you emulate tables via VPM you will need
many more keys. Some examples are:
- Pinball machines usually got 3 or 4 coin slots
- Inside the pinball machine there are buttons (2-16!) to access operators
menu etc.
- Games might have extra buttons on the side to control upper flippers,
magna saves etc
- Joystick
When creating the standard scripts I needed a way to specify these keys in a
way that worked across the tables. The way I choosed was to create a file
"VPMkeys.vbs". This file normally resides in the "tables" or "scripts"
directory.
In there you will see a long list of keys that are used by the standard
scripts.
e.g. "keySlamDoorHit = 199" means that "home" key (keycode 199) is used to
trigger the "slamtilt" switch on the coin door in games that got such a
switch. Just edit this file to change the default keyboard mapping.
There are also keys in the file for joysticks, buy-in buttons and other game
specific buttons but since these are "game specific" they are not handled by
the standard script. It is up to the table author to map these to the
correct game function. Haven't played baby-pacman so I don't know if it uses
the "keyJoyUp", "keyJoyDown", "keyJoyLeft" and "keyJoyRight" keys in
"VPMkeys.vbs" or if it is hardcoded to the arrow keys.
In short. If you want to change the keys for flippers, plunger, nudging and
start go to the VP settings dialogue and for all other keys go to the
"VPMkeys.vbs" file.
What about the insert coin key in VP? Since there is only one key for insert
coin in VP and a table might have 4 coin slots the question is which coin
slot to connect the key to. I tried various ways but it always created
problem in one way or the other so I decided to put all of the "insert coin"
keys in the "VPMkeys.vbs" file. i.e. The "insert coin" key defined in the VP
settings dialogue will not work in a VPM table but you can change the 4
"keyInsertCoin" settings in "VPMkeys.vbs"
One last thing. The keycodes in the VP help file is based on an american
keybord layout and this is also what you will see if you press the F2 key
during gameplay. Unfortunatly there is no way (that I am aware of) to access
the locale keyboard layout from a VBS script.
Hope this helps.
<bows>
And check out what WPCMame posted about the keyboard adjustments.
He's part of the VPM team and pretty much knows the answer to every
tech question imaginable. :)
